House Concerts with Shannon Curtis

Shannon Curtis writes songs and stories, and performs them as a dynamic one-woman-and-keyboard show. She makes records with her husband, producer Jamie Hill, with a cinematic artpop sound. And the two of them set out every year to deliver Shannon’s songs to audiences across the continent, wrapped up in intimate experiences with a powerfully punk aesthetic. They’re currently in the midst of their 6th annual house concert tour, this year stopping in 70 backyards and living rooms all over North America. Each show is a community-driven effort, hosted by someone who supports the music Shannon and Jamie make, for the host’s local community of friends and neighbors. The astonishing success of the house concert model they invented (and continue to perfect with each tour) led them to write a book about it — No Booker, No Bouncer, No Bartender: How I Made $25,000 on a 2-Month House Concert Tour (And How You Can Too) — which debuted at #1 on Amazon’s Music Business Bestsellers List in 2014. Grammy Nominee Tips for Success

Grammy nominees from the children’s music category in 2017 for a special concert held at Lucky Strike Live in Hollywood spoke with me about their work and what worked for them. We discussed their inspiration and tips for making it in the music business. One common theme was the importance of doing what is authentic to you and not doing what you think would work, just because it’s a formula. Almost all of the artists also discussed that they were musicians outside of children’s music first and found it easier to balance family life and music life when they switched to children’s music. Another theme that emerged was the importance of working away at your music career and basically doing the work both musically and on the business end. The nominees were Brady Rymer and The Little Band that Could, Frances England, Okee Dokee Brothers, Recess Monkey and Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. Go to www.tinyurl.com/GrammyKids for more information on the event. NAMM Tips and Interview with Chesbro CEO Tana Stahn

A message from Laura with tips for NAMM: "As a first time attendee of NAMM in Anaheim, I decided to share some tips with you on the event followed up with an interview with Teton Guitars and Chesbro CEO Tana Stahn. First of all, I recommend staying close though actually not on-site. I stayed about a mile and a half away which was a quick ride to and from so it was close and convenient but a bit away from the fray. I highly recommend bringing snacks and food as the food lines were often 45 minutes to an hour and there isn’t a huge selection. Looking at schedule and determine what your goals and then mapping out rough schedule using the app and the website was the way to go for me. Remember it takes a fair amount of time to go from hall to hall as the venue is so huge! Lastly if you’ve never gone, I do recommend it, I met a lot of great people and learned a lot – I will also be sharing more interviews with those I connected with there. Things coming up! Excited that this weekend I will be interviewing Grammy nominees and then following up with going to the Durango Songwriters Expo in Ventura, California so I will have a lot more interviews and tips to share with you. Also I am so happy that my podcasts have gotten over 2 million downloads to date and I am getting about 400 downloads a day on this one and growing quickly! If you want to learn about my other podcasts, you can go to my website www.laurapowers.net. I also had the pleasure of interviewing Tana Stahn, CEO of Chesbro music, live at NAMM." Chesbro Music Company, is a prime example of a distributor-turn-manufacturer. Chesbro Music Company is a privately owned American manufacturer and wholesaler of musical instruments, musical instrument accessories and sheet music. Chesbro Music was founded in 1911 and is based in Idaho Falls, Idaho.[1] Chesbro owns Teton Guitars, and has been run by female CEOs since 1953. For more information Ehttp://chesbrowholesale.com. Some of the band members did acapella in college and started to form sound but they stand out because approach from a rock or pop versus acapella. They recently crowdfunded $40k through Kickstarter for a European tour so we talked about that as an option for bands who want to tour. They are 5 guys, artists, friends, and in business. Trends in the Music Business with Ritch Esra from The Busine

In this podcast, Laura interviews Ritch Esra from The Music Business Registry. We discussed how the model has shifted from a copy model to an access model (from cd’s to streaming for example). Ritch addressed how musicians and artists really need to figure out what their aims are in terms of music. We also discussed how the industry is changing so quickly and it is really important for artists to understand what is happening in the industry in order to be successful. It is currently difficult to make money from recorded music. For most recording artists, less than 6 % of their income is coming from recorded music. What constitutes a successful artist is you must be a live performer. The good news is there are no more gatekeepers, the bad news is there are no more gates so the ability to get people’s attention is paramount. Think of your life, how many times in a day is someone trying to get your attention? The worst enemy is obscurity. With these changes, there is so much more choice which is great but it can be even harder to be seen. For example, the first Sundance film festival, they had 62 submissions, last year they had 2,800. This year there are 412 scripted TV shows this year. It can be hard to be seen in that environment. It used Even if people are gifted, they will not be successful unless they have drive as well. We discussed how the model has changed from making money from selling recorded music to selling merchandise or live shows. According to Forbes, Katy Perry made $135 million last year and only 8 % came from music sales. One thing Prince did in 2006, he gave $3.5 million in cover mount cd’s in the newspaper (cd’s given away for free on the cover) with that very aim when he had 21 nights of shows in London. That said this kind of large-scale success is rare. Ritch mentioned that 18 percent of people watch TV networks, and that nothing in the 82 dominates. Last year, Live Nation did a study looking at why 35% of their tickets weren’t selling and it was because people didn’t know their favorite bands were playing. That said, now it is possible for more people to make a living as an artist than in the past. The importance of educating yourself on the industry is paramount so that you can guide your work and focus in a smart way. Ritch recommended professional development including attending conferences, workshops, and events and listening to podcasts etc. In fact, Laura and Ritch connected through the ASCAP – I Create Music Conference. Educate yourself on trends and resources. Ritch also recommended Music Business Television as a resource http://mubutv.com/. Twitter recently launched music industry insider series on Mondays.
