111: Assisted Off the Grid

Joshua Vergara, Jonathan Feist, Joe Hindy and David Imel get together early Sunday morning to chat technology in episode 111 of the Android Authority Podcast. We talk about tech in general, but two main topics guide the show, the HTC U 11 and smart assistants. Apple has a pod now, Amazon's Alexa continues to shine, but Google Home is catching up. The debate turns to software vs experience vs hardware, all the while considering practicality of it all based on current capabilities and limitations. Warning, we use all of the Personal Assistant trigger words, many times. If "OK, Google", "Alexa", "Echo" or "Computer" are your hotwords, consider using headphones for this show. 109: Spark Watch

Joshua Vergara, Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist and David Imel get together to chat phones, watches and drones in episode 109 of the Android Authority Podcast. We share some final thoughts on Google I/O, but mostly we're talking Android O, which, actually, is little more than an emoji conversation. It's okay David, you'll survive the blobs. DJI has announced a small new drone, the DJI Spark threatens to be the drone that puts drones in mainstream. Wearables rear their head again, we've all used a smart watch and/or a fitness band, but none of them have really stuck, what comes next? Joshua Vergara is in San Francisco for Google I/O 2017. Taking a couple days to let it all sink in, Kris Carlon, Nirave Gondhia, David Imel and Edgar Cervantes join together to chat about the event. Google I/O provided plenty of value to developers, introducing many great new tools that we'll see in products moving forward. Android O was a minor topic directly, but will be the version of the OS that gets all the best in the coming months. Welcome to the first normal episode of the Android Authority Podcast in 2017! Hosted by Joshua Vergara, Jonathan Feist and David Imel ask Joe Hindy what he thought of CES 2017, enjoying his valuable outsider's perspective. I'm not sure we've had the chance to mention this yet (I'm joking!) but CES seemed to be all about autonomous cars and AI technology - but really, Amazon's Alexa was the star of the show, made available to hundreds of devices and services found on the show floor. Special: DJI & LA Auto Show

Joshua Vergara and Jonathan Feist are hanging out in LA, taking in the LA Auto Show, or at least Automobility LA, the press version of the show, and the immensely entertaining launch event for the DJI Inspire 2 and Phantom 4 Pro drones. Joined by special guest Nicole Scott (@Nicole_Scooter) the conversation started with the cars of the car show, followed by Hyperloop One and our thoughts on outdated Android tech in modern cars. Don't worry, we have Android stuff to talk about thanks to Joe and David DJI was a major event for us, reporting the new Phantom 4 Pro and Inspire 2 on our partner site, Charged.io. With full Hollywood style theatrics, and a price tag to match, these are some impressive drones. Having said that, Josh and Jonathan were invited to a press event for the DJI Mavic Pro for the day after recording this show. Writing this up after the fact, stay tuned for our Mavic Pro coverage! While half the team was at play, Joe Hindy led the charge with David Imel back at home, recording an informative take on the news of the week. After checking in with our avoidance of the election topic and some laptop issues, we dive into high-priced phones. The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 9 reminds us of other expensive brands, leading us to think of products in a theoretical financed world, an exploration of consumerism. Self exploration continues as we talk the upcoming OnePlus 3T, dreaming of what we want to see in the new device, remembering what the original OnePlus offered. Topics start off with the Google Pixel, talking value and ingress protection, Josh opens up a live Q&A session for the LG V20, a phone that was promoted as the first to sell with Android 7.0 Nougat, but isn't actually out yet. LeEco had a big event, Josh sounds like he enjoyed it for its dramatic approach, and the affordable Le Pro 3. 084: We're just full of bad ideas today

In an explosive episode (sorry, I had to do that) Josh and Joe are joined by returning hosts Lanh and David to talk about the week's top Android news. The Galaxy Note 7 discontinuation is obviously the biggest pieces of news and there is ample time given to the topic. However, before all that, David gives his recounting of the Oculus Connect event that he and VRSource covered just a couple weeks back. Lanh gives us his quick podcast review of the Sony Xperia XZ, the full review of which is on Android Authority; and, finally, we talk about Nougat 7.1 and the Developer Preview that basically leaves out Google Assistant. But perhaps the craziest piece of news actually came from the podcast itself - that Josh has been buying faulty USB-C cables and it actually claimed a victim. Yeah, it's that bad. 083: Pixelation (+1 for bad pun)

Join Joshua Vergara, Jonathan Feist, Joe Hindy, and a returning Nirave Gondhia as they get together for another fun episode of the Android Authority Podcast! In this episode, it's all about the Google Pixel event where we were treated to announcements of the new Google products for 2016. Before getting into the actual devices and announcements, this week's check-in is largely a talk about Craig David, a favorite recording of artist of Josh and Nirave, who performed at the UK Google event (basically, Josh's FOMO was real). From there, however, the guys get into the big discussions - Google Wifi kicks off the event talk as Feist gives his thoughts on what could be a good solution for in-home connectivity. Google Home comes up next, and the general thoughts were that Home poses an interesting new direction for Google's robust and somewhat scary Learning Matrix. Speaking of the Learning Matrix, a tweet from a happy listener makes the guys ponder if Google's design direction for their products simply masks the fact that Google's services - like Google Assistant - are a bit too smart and somewhat terrifying. And finally the guys get into a big discussion regarding the Google Pixel phones and why they might be a little divisive for fans of Google's previous hardware endeavors - basically, it comes down to Pixel vs Nexus. IFA 2016 special edition

Join Joshua Vergara, along with Nicole Scott (@Nicole_Scooter), Jaime Rivera (@Jaime_Rivera) and Juan Carlos Bagnell (@SomeGadgetGuy) to talk IFA 2016. A meta discussion on tech events, including lots of talk about recent device announcements, turns to wearables and how they are becoming gender specific, which leads to gender role generalizations and possibly misguided expectations in the industry. At least IFA Young sounds like a ton of fun, for the millennials. Finally, VR takes the stage, with debate on rollout philosophy and the value for the average user.  Thank you for joining us. 075: Phrasing!

Seven. Joshua Vergara has his hands full this week with a total personality list of seven. Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush, Nirave Gondhia, Lanh Nguyen and John Dye are all on deck to talk about seven, the Note 7 that is. In a particularly on-point show, even if a little extra long, the topic is almost exclusively the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Opinions come freely, particularly for the three that have had the chance to hold the phone already. 074: John's car is melting

With Joshua Vergara away at a Samsung event, Jonathan Feist and Joe Hindy bring John Dye back onto the show - who ends up joining from a coffee shop due to weather issues in his area. A fairly chill conversation ensues, including words like 'reprobate' and attempts to pronounce John Legere. Topics on deck include the new ZTE Axon 7, a slick looking flagship calibre phone that has Bluetooth, Prisma, the app that makes your images look good, and talk about rumors of two Nexus phones coming soon from HTC. Sailfish and Marlin are the codenames for 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch phones with similar specs, save for display resolution, if nothing else. Thank you for joining us. Joshua Vergara is joined by Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist and are happy to have Lanh Nguyen partake in the shenanigans as they round out a short discussion, possibly ending our long running topic of Pokemon. Once that was out of the way, Josh asked the team about their desires for Comic-Con, leading back to a quick chat about messaging applications. Snickers have nougat. Finally, our discussion on the new Motorola (Lenovo) Moto Z line turns into an existential conversation on the review process, USB Type-C audio and how great or terrible mods and customizations can be on the Moto phone. Joshua Vergara leads the team through a lengthy introduction, where Joe Hindy talks Pokemon Go, Nirave Gondhia talks about returning home to the UK and Jonathan Feist is hanging out in downtown Portland for a while. Discussion turns to the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, we have plenty to say, particularly expanding our conversation to talk about modern smartphone needs, features, competitive edge and more. We round out the show with a lively discussion about USB Type-C audio, as opposed to the old 3.5mm jack. Then Nirave fell asleep. Finally, the discussion turns to the ups and downs of beauty mode as a feature of front facing cameras, this after Mel Wells lost all her freckles to a Selfie. Thank you for joining us. 069: Podcast McPodcastface & the SonyMoto XYZ

Our best wishes go out to Josh, his family and his neighbors as they deal with a forest fire dangerously close to their homes in California. Jonathan Feist leads a wildly off topic episode while Joe Hindy, Andrew Grush and Nirave Gondhia help keep the laughs rolling. We eventually get down to the leathery hot mess that is the naming schemes of the X and Z for Sony and Motorola. The Sony Xperia X line, as well as the Lenovo Motorola Moto Z line, offer all the right specs, but you'll have to listen to find out if we are still underwhelmed with the devices or ready to drop cash on these new phones. In the final moments, Joe is allowed to address the somewhat ridiculous idea that the Android app market is in decline, come analyze some data with us. Thank you for joining us. 068: The VRSource Edition!

Coming live from E3 2016 in Los Angeles, Josh is joined by Jonathan Feist and heads of VRSource Android Grush and John Velasco (for his first ever podcast!) to talk video games and VR from the trade show floor. Well, not really, because they couldn't record among the different game vendors and displays but instead had to sit in the South Hall Lobby as the final day of the show winded down. With VR taking the spotlight at this year's E3, this episode of the podcast becomes basically a VRSource podcast, but the antics are about as #AAPodcast as it can get. John Velasco fits right into the talks as he recounts experiences with the Oculus Rift, the HTC Vive, and Playstation VR! The rest of the guys also share the fun they had escaping from the real world and embracing all kinds of reality! Andrew Grush returns to join Josh Vergara, Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist for the latest episode of the AA Podcast. Joe's spirited discussion on what makes a flagship smartphone stand out continues this week, moving the topic more to the software side of things. We didn't talk about Google bringing app awards to the Google I/O conference this year, but we did talk about what we do and do not like about some phones, we think the Motorola Citrus with a Nexus Live Case or DBrand skin wouldn't make the phone any better, but that certainly made us talk about physical buttons. 059: Good enough for the Average User

Josh Vergara leads the way for Joe Hindy, Nirave Gondhia and Jonathan Feist to chat about Android stuff. With the goal of chatting about the HTC 10 and TV commercials, Joe gets the panel debating flagship devices and what makes them great, or not great, either way, outrage over all phones being made for the average user prevails. Storage space is the name of the game, as it turns out. What does make for a flagship? Has the Chromebook ruined manufacturer's expectations of user needs? We try to answer these things, but it may be that 16GB or 32GB of internal storage is here to stay for a while. 057: LG G5, Miitomo and April Fool's pranks

With Josh away, Jonathan Feist, Joe Hindy and Nirave Gondhia get up to all sorts of April Fool's Day inspired trouble. This episode is not available in SnoopaVision, there is no Nokia A1 in the works, at least not that we know of, and the best smartphone ever, well, we still think we're on to something. Joins us as we chat about Nintendo's first attempts at an Android game, Mittomo, we talk about our favorite April Fool's Day pranks as well, but one of our own gets us really thinking, what do we really want out of our ideal Android phone? You had the chance to answer that on the site, and our discussion continually turns to the LG G5, does that mean we think the LG G5 is the ideal phone? Listen on to find out, but one thing is for sure, we know where we stand on the plastic vs metal conversation. 056: Gotta catch 'em AMOLEDs

Getting back to our normal routine, for one week, Joshua Vergara hosts as Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist record on a Saturday. We concede that some of the biggest news from the week is the announcement of the new iPhone SE and iPad Pro 9.7, both of which we don't think will disrupt the market at all, but we're looking forward to the iPad coverage over on TabTimes.  Talking about Pokemon Go leads to a quick discussion on AR vs VR technology - some of us think AR is the way of the future, others think VR will win out, but we all agree, there is room to grow. Finally, Joe has to go clean his back yard... No, that's not it, we talked about display technology, we think we like the fact that AMOLED panels can now be produced at a lower cost than LCD, but that is dependent on the resolution. Talking VR at SXSW 2016

The Android Authority team goes outside of their general zone and visits SXSW, the film/music/tech festival held in the wonderful city of Austin, Texas! After a few days of getting to know the show itself, Joshua Vergara was joined by co-founder Darcy Lacouvee and Managing Editor Nirave Gondhia to attend a number of panels teaching the in and outs of virtual reality and 360 video. The gist of the panels focused on storytelling, the application of VR for more than just the entertainment business, and the future of the next big thing in content creation. In this podcast, however, the three were joined by a native Texan now hailing from Louisiana, writer John Dye. Many of you fans of Android Authority have probably read John's writing on the website and enjoyed his way with words. So, without any further ado, listen (and watch on YouTube) the guys gush about VR cameras and videos! The Android Authority Podcast - discussing topics in Android every week.

041: Subscriptioned to death!

Joe Hindy and Jonathan Feist get together this week with Josh to talk about the topics of the week, but there weren't too many things to talk about during another slow news week. With the holiday season fast approaching, the guys talk about Black Friday one more time, pondering what items they might want to get if they got out of the house to actually battle the crowds (Joe has already decided that he won't). But after a few check-ins and some talk about Josh's experience appearing on TWiT's All About Android, the gang checks on their subscription services and risks realizing just how much money they're burning on what has become a micro-payment, subscription-based world. Josh is joined this week by Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush, and Joe Hindy as the slow news week winds down. Though it was definitely a slower week than most, that didn't keep the guys from finding things to talk about - exploding spare batteries, wireless chargers, and new VR applications. But the main topics focus upon the DROID line in Verizon and how they believe these phones should be available outside of just that one carrier. To round things out, they speak about the OnePlus X ahead of what will be Josh's full review later this week. 038: OnePlus X and Chromedroid

With Josh Vergara sitting this one out, Jonathan Feist leads while Andrew Grush, Joe Hindy and Nirave Gondhia spend a good amount of time saying really nice things about the OnePlus X and the Samsung Galaxy View. One is a decidedly mid-range smartphone with a fairly small display, the other is a decidedly mid-range tablet with a honkin’ big 18.4-inch display. We are split on our thoughts of a merger between Android and Chrome OS; opinions are all over the place, fueled by the basic uncertainty as to what exactly may or may not happen to Android and that other OS that Google has. Enjoy AA Podcast #038. With Joshua Vergara and Joe Hindy sitting this one out, Jonathan Feist leads while Andrew Grush and Nirave Gondhia spend a good amount of time figuring out if OnePlus has a good marketing strategy with the Two, or if they are just a little bonkers. Android Marshmallow continues to roll out, with LG announcing they'll be the first non-Nexus devices to get the update. With all of these new and exciting devices on the market, last generation devices are starting to see some amazing price tags, listen on to find out if we think the Nexus 6 is still a good buy. 035: Marshwindow

The full panel gets together this week to mull over what was a pretty slow week in Android news - Joe had just put out a great review of Android Marshmallow, so that serves as our platform for the majority of the episode. Jonathan Feist, Andrew Grush, Nirave Gondhia, Joe Hindy, and host Joshua Vergara talk video games, homescreen setups, and even cars for a minute because the Marshmallow conversation just naturally veers in that direction. We know that doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but you guys should know by now that the digressions come hard and fast for the AA Podcast crew! But in light of a slow Android news week, we had to talk about the week's biggest news - the return of Windows Mobile. Though Nokia as a company is, for the most part, fully absorbed into Microsoft and virtually unrecognizable, the new Lumia devices did actually get us a little excited for a platform that simply doesn't get a lot of play compared to Android and iOS. Will we dive into the Lumias and do a few off-platform reviews? Only time will tell, but until then we have this conversation about the new announcements. 034: Nexus, Nexus, Nexus!

Google recently announced two new Nexus devices, is there anything more to say? Of course there is. Josh leads the entire panel through some talk about school road mayhem, a slight point of contention for Joe and Nirave. Andrew and Jonathan were a little more relaxed about it. Conversation shifts to tablets and TabTimes, ever so briefly, before we dive into the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. We make the obvious comparisons to other devices like the Moto X Pure and ponder why LG announced the V10 right in the mix. Although not an after thought, Google also announced the Pixel C, a large productivity tablet with keyboard cover, not exactly a game changer, or is it? Join us for this and more, and we hope you have as much fun as we did. (Even though Josh calls it episode #33 in his intro, no worries, it's still the next show.) Enjoy AA Podcast #034. Podcast 033: If a Nexus leaks, will you still buy it?

What starts off as a collection of selfie stick belittling, turns into Andrew Grush, Joe Hindy and Nirave Gondhia following along as Jonathan Feist pretends to lead the show. We talk about Blackberry and their new Priv, previously known as Venice, which leads to ribbing Josh while he's not there to defend himself. Google has two new devices coming this week, the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P.  We wanted to say little more on the subject, saving our thoughts for next week, but our discussion on the current leak culture took us right back to the Nexus devices. Will you be purchasing a new Nexus device, or at least holding off another purchase until you see what Google has to offer? Huawei was a recurring topic throughout the show, we all had mostly great things to say about them and their products, leaving us highly anticipating the Nexus 6P, which is also built by Huawei. It is the first of hopefully many Ask us Anything episodes that we want to make available on the FDP! The FDP by Android Authority - discussing topics in Android every week.

FDP 016: Android M and LG G4

The gang gets together for another episode of the FDP! Yes, we changed the name of the podcast and in the beginning of this spirited conversation the team talks about why it happened. Jonathan Feist, Joseph Hindy, Andrew Grush, and Nirave Gondhia join Joshua Vergara for a longer talk this week as they go through a number of different topics. They think of what the new Android M iteration might be called (and, true to form, Joe comes up with a left-field answer) and then get into what features they would want from the next iteration of Google's mobile operating system. A talk about the newly reviewed LG G4 rounds out the conversation, including a much needed discussion about how we view good battery life. FDP 015: LG G4 with Special Guests!

That's right, we've changed the name of our podcast to just FDP. We saw that you guys like the hashtag #FDP and we wanted to keep it, too! And among other reasons, "Friday Debate" just didn't make as much sense anymore. So, we are now the FDP - where P stands for Podcast. This week, we have a really special episode with some very special friends. Josh was in NYC for the LG G4 launch event and the couple days were eventual, to say the least - the event itself was at the top of One World Trade Center with stunning views of Manhattan and this podcast was recorded ON A BOAT. A trek to a ship floating off the shores of the Hudson River eventually brought Josh and his guests to what would be the backdrop for this week's FDP. Josh is joined by Michael Fisher (@captain2phones) of Pocketnow, Florence Ion (@ohthatflo) of Greenbot, and Dom Esposito (@macmixing) of 9to5Google and YouTube.com/dom! They talk about Project Fi to warm up and then get into the LG G4 itself, with plenty of fun tangents along the way. And be forewarned, the environment does mean a lot of background noise including helicopters and a creaking boat. But it's still a really fun listen so fire up your podcast app or head to YouTube to enjoy some bonus behind the scenes footage! The Android Authority FDP - where P stands for Podcast!

Project Fi | The Friday Debate Podcast 014 | Android Authority

The gang gets together, catches up on the week's personal happenings, and then gets talking about Project Fi. For those who don't know, Project Fi is a new wireless service (basically a MVNO) by Google that focuses on the ability to move from mobile networks and Wi-Fi hotspots on the fly, as well as some simpler pricing for talk, text, and data. The functionality to switch among networks is only found on the Nexus 6, currently, however, but the gang talks about future possibilities. Project Fi is certainly an anticipated move from Google, but are we really happy with the details that have thus far come to light? Find out on the FDP! Flagships vs Midrange | The Friday Debate Podcast 013 | Android Authority

This week we welcome another guest to the podcast, writer Nirave Gondhia as we take on a topic that was picked by you, our fans. A poll posted on Google+ yielded our topic for this week - the question of whether flagship devices still make sense with a growing midrange market. Phones coming in a lower price point are gradually bringing high-end experiences, with perhaps just a few holes left in their evolution. So, we ponder the question of how midrange devices fare against the current crop of flagships from the likes of Samsung, HTC, and future phones from the likes of LG and Sony. We run the gamut and veer off course a few times, but that's just how it goes on the FDP. Follow our poll on Google+ once again this week and let us know which topic you want us to talk about next! Thank you for your participation and we look forward to seeing your responses! The Friday Debate Podcast by Android Authority - discussing topics in Android every week.

Apple Watch, Galaxy S6, and One M9 | The Friday Debate Podcast 012 | Android Authority

This week, the team gets together to talk about upcoming devices - in particular, the new phones from Samsung and HTC. Our main question centered on which phone our hosts would buy with their hard-earned money. But before that talk, they speak about the Apple Watch and what it might mean for the future of smartwatches. They soon realize that the Apple Watch isn't even out yet, even after talking about it at length in different perspectives. Oops. We're making changes to the podcast very soon - nothing too big, but it will involve all of you listeners and fans! Stay tuned for all of that and check our poll for what we might talk about next week! The Friday Debate Podcast by Android Authority - discussing topics in Android every week.

Chrome OS | The Friday Debate Podcast 011 | Android Authority

And to round out our double feature for today, we have the team back again for a round of Chrome OS talk. This past week (on April Fool's Day, no less) we got a number of announcements regarding the Chrome ecosystem. Chromebit is a new platform that will put a fully functioning Chrome OS onto any HDMI-capable television, Chrome OS itself is getting some good Android testing capabilities, and Chromebooks continue to grow. And with all of that in mind, the team ponders: do Chrome and cloud based solutions make sense for the kind of users we are? With Jonathan Feist as the only one in the group sporting a Chromebook; Josh, Joe, and Andrew get a crash course on what could be the future of computing. As always, keep it tuned to Android Authority and visit the FDP page on AndroidAuthority.com for all of the links to relevant stories and social media! Sci-Fi Today | The Friday Debate Podcast 010 | Android Authority

Technical difficulties kept the Friday Debate Podcast from releasing last week, but after a lot of fiddling around with the audio, we're bringing you a DOUBLE FEATURE this week for the FDP. Today, Josh is joined by the usual group of hosts to talk science fiction - well, not necessarily sci-fi but instead the kinds of technology we wanted while growing up that we might be seeing today. We bounce around the ideas of jet-packs, virtual reality, smart homes, and all of their implications - while getting caught in a lot of tangents that make for one of the longest editions of the podcast we've had yet. Come join us and don't forget to listen to the podcast on all of the podcasting networks, as well has following us all on social media - the links for everything are in the full post for the podcast below! Soon we will be taking your own questions and topics, so give us all a shoutout all over the place with the hashtag #FDP! The Friday Debate Podcast - discussing topics in Android every week.

Specs vs Experience | The Friday Debate Podcast 009 | Android Authority

Don't forget to talk about the 'cast with the hashtag #FDP and tag Android Authority across social media networks! The flagship reviews and some techinical difficulties kept the Friday Debate Podcast from releasing on time - but to be fair, we recorded this on Friday so it still makes sense! Jokes aside, we have Lanh filling in for Andrew this week as we talk about the age-old battle between specifications and user experience. With phones like the Moto E coming along with all of these high profile releases from Samsung and HTC, we talk about whether the general usage experience really needs high end specifications. We also ponder how raw specs drive perception of a phone. And finally, we touch upon the Uh Oh program that was just recently announced by HTC in which users can get a brand new phone when their current One M9 fails or gets damaged. It's a pretty packed episode, so make sure you tune into this episode #9 of the FDP! The Friday Debate Podcast by Android Authority - discussing topics in Android every week.
