‘Guidance was born and as a result the universe became illuminated with every beautiful quality And the mouth of time was all smiles and praise.’   In this Khutba, Ustadh Tariq Samady quotes beautiful statements made about the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by knowers of Allah, the righteous, poets, and even the Prophet ﷺ himself.    Ustadh Tariq ends with a recent poem by Shaykh Hamza Yusuf titled ‘Be Like Ahmad.’

“The way to [Allah’s love] is in following and loving the Messenger ﷺ.” The foundational virtue in Islam is love. All other virtues either help us to arrive at the station of love or are the fruits of love. In this Khutba, Shaykh Amjad Tarsin explains the three main reasons why people fall in love and how the perfection of all these reasons is found in the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He provides three practical and easy ways to strengthen one’s love of the Prophet ﷺ.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said in a well-known Hadith Qudsi in Bukhari:   “Verily Allah the Exalted has said: ‘Whosoever shows enmity to a wali of Mine, then I have declared war against him. And My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more loved to Me than the religious duties I have obligated upon him. And My servant continues to draw near to me with supererogatory deeds until I love him.  “When I love him, I am his hearing with which he hears, and his sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he strikes, and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him; and were he to seek refuge with Me, I would surely grant him refuge.’”   In this Khutba, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus explains this Hadith Qudsi line-by-line, stressing the status of those considered beloved to Allah the Exalted (wali) and exploring the path that leads to Allah’s love.

“We really need to dedicate time and thought and effort into deepening the bonds of love.”   The turning point for the Umma was the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ Hijra (622 CE), when the Muslims migrated from Mecca to Madina. Upon arriving in Madina, the Prophet ﷺ first ordered the building of the masjid and then established bonds of brotherhood between the Muhajirun (migrants) and the Ansar (helpers).   Citing the Quran and Prophetic Hadith, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin explains the significance of strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, as well as the importance of loving each other for the sake of Allah the Exalted. He ends with three things that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told us to do to strengthen these bonds and to engender love for one another.

He will take a route of 1000 miles only to get you into a hole which is 3 feet away from you.”   In this extremely instructive khutba based on numerous verses in the Quran and Hadith, Shaykh Alaudeen Us’Sutteri discusses how Muslims should deal with (1) Allah and (2) Creation – specifically self, shaytan, parents, spouses, children, Muslims, non-Muslims, and animals.

“[Adab] is the gathering point; it is that one reality within the human being, that one dimension that includes all aspects of good.” Adab is an Arabic word that contains such a richness of meaning that makes it difficult to translate. Words such as etiquette, good manners, and comportment are often used in an attempt to convey its meaning, though they still fall short in capturing its full depth. One of the righteous said that the crisis of our time is a lack of adab. In this extremely important Khutba, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus discusses the three degrees of adab, the three types of adab, and the three things needed to be a person of adab. Shaykh Yahya also explains how a lack of adab will lead to a watered-down version of Islam, which is especially dangerous in these times as we come closer to the emergence of the Dajjal (the False Messiah).

“O My servants, I have forbidden wrongdoing for Myself and I have made it forbidden for you. Therefore, do not wrong one another. O My servants, all of you are lost except for those whom I have guided. Therefore, seek guidance from Me and I will guide you…” In his compilation of Forty Hadith, Imam Nawawi chose the most important and central hadith that comprehensively provide an understanding of the essential aspects of the religion. In this Khutba, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin discusses Hadith #24, a Hadith Qudsi, where the meaning is from Allah the Exalted, but the phrasing is from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Ustadh Amjad first notes that in this Hadith Qudsi, Allah the Exalted refers to us as “O My servants” (يَا عِبَادِي or ya ‘ibadi), which is an attribution of honor. Allah then proceeds to inform us of His Power, Will, Majesty, and Perfection so that we witness Him in everything created and demonstrate our gratitude towards Him.

“One of the things that the end of Ramadan teaches us is … about the nature of death itself.” On this last Jumua in Ramadan, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin asks us to reflect upon how Ramadan has brought us nearer to Allah the Exalted so that we continue to seek His good pleasure and nearness after the month ends.  Ustadh Amjad also tells of the allegory of the generous king and the final request made by the individual who stayed behind.

“The eternal Home in the Hereafter We reserve only for those who seek neither tyranny nor corruption on the earth.” Shaykh Yahya Rhodus relates the story of Qarun—who was from the people of Prophet Musa, peace be upon him, but a close associate of the Pharaoh—as a reminder of the proper attitude towards receiving Divine gifts in this life (see Sura al-Qasas, 28:76-83). He uses this Quranic account to explain the importance of seeking the Hereafter and how to use blessings in ways that increase us in nearness to Allah. “If we spend our life following our desires, that’s not your true self.”   The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught the Companions (and us all by extension) the importance of loving him ﷺ more than anything else—not for his own benefit ﷺ, but for the immense blessings it brings them.  In this timely reflection as Shaban, the month of the Prophet ﷺ, approaches, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus mentions three seminal Hadith and two verses in the Qur’an to explain why the degree to which we love the Prophet ﷺ is the degree to which we can reach the loftiest levels of iman (faith), and to which our soul can become tranquil (al-nafs al-mutma’inna), such that one no longer finds any hardship or difficulty in acts of obedience.

“The people of the Quran are the people of Allah and His elect. His special choicest of people. They are the ones [whom] Allah (Glorious and Exalted) loves uniquely.”    One of the righteous, when reciting the Quran, tasted honey out of his love, reverence, and yearning for it. “There are eight Gates to Paradise. All of them open at certain times and close at others—except for the Gate of Repentance.”   Imam Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad, a great scholar and sufi during the time of the salaf (first three generations after the Prophet ﷺ) was once a feared and infamous highway robber. Upon hearing the recitation of verse 16 in Surah al-Hadid (57:16), he made a complete repentance.  In this khutba, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin relates the story of Imam Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad’s remarkable transformation and discusses what it teaches us about hoping in Allah’s Mercy and receiving the Divine Gaze.

“Allah has in His earth containers, hearts,…and the best of them are the purest, the firmest, and the most brittle.” We can either follow the footsteps of Prophet Adam, peace be upon him, and repent when we transgress against ourselves or others; or follow those of Shaytan, the accursed, the archetype of arrogance. “When you think of the deceased, consider yourself amongst them.” The definition of true success can be found in the Quran: “Whoever is spared from the Fire and admitted into Paradise will indeed triumph, whereas the life of this world is no more than the delusion of enjoyment.” [3:185] In this reflection, Ustadh Yusuf Weltch discusses the four signs of wretchedness that lead to the Fire, which the Prophet Muhammad  ﷺ warned us about, and explains their cure. He also mentions the biggest sign that indicates someone is among the people of Paradise.

“Do whatever you can for Allah (Glorious and Exalted), but recognize that you have to do something.” Every Muslim has the responsibility to tell the Truth as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and conveyed to us. We should share the Message of Islam with wisdom and beautiful reminders. Ustadh Amjad Tarsin provides a beautiful example of the Companions‘ willingness to sacrifice all for the truth with the story of the Prophet’s cousin, Sayyidina Ja’far ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, when he recited verses in the Quran about Isa (Jesus), peace be upon him, to the Christian king of Abyssinia (modern day Ethiopia) [Quran 19:16-35].

In a well-known hadith, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ mentions  two qualities that Allah the Exalted loves, one of which is deliberation.  In this Khutba, Ustadh Hasan Petrus explains its meaning in the Islamic context and gives three examples of it in the Quran. He also mentions several benefits that arise from deliberating.  With today’s social media and the ability to pass on information instantaneously, it has never been so important to work towards acquiring this virtue.

Habib Ali al-Jifri identifies four ways to protect one’s family and their faith from today’s challenges. In this series, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin explains each of them, beginning with establishing the family on the love of Allah the Exalted and the awareness that He sees us at all times. He also provides numerous practical examples on how to implement these teachings immediately in one’s family.

“[The heart] is the locus of the gaze of the Real.” In this both enlightening and practical khutba, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus gives a detailed discussion on Shaykh Ibrahim al-Khawas’s advice on how to rectify and purify one’s heart. Shaykh Ibrahim al-Khawas was among the elect of the righteous in the 3rd Islamic century and known for his complete trust (tawakkul) in Allah the Exalted.

“The things that are perceived at a sensory level, at a very superficial level, that’s not all of reality.” Ustadh Amjad Tarsin shares a profound hadith, which the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described as “wondrous” (‘ajaban), that shows the benefits of performing righteous actions in this world which manifest and become a reality in the Unseen World.

“Allah Ta’ala gives His Knowledge to whom He pleases.” Shaykh Yahya Rhodus breaks down Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) into meaningful parts and suggests six key times when to recite it. “The story of the whole world is between two sajdas.” It has been asked among scholars: “What verse in the Qur’an inspires the most hope?” In this extremely uplifting khutba, Ustadh Hasan Petrus discusses four different answers to this question. Continuing the discussion from last Jumua on the dhikr laa ilaaha illallah, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin explains that the way to actualize the realities of laa ilaaha illallah is found through the most beloved of creation, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He also answers the question why there are so many Prophetic du’as (supplications) in Islam.

"There is no life except the life of the Hereafter.” In this Jumua Khutba, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin explains why we should seek the good pleasure of Allah the Exalted in every moment and in every state. He also discusses the benefits of the dhikr (remembrance) laa ilaaha illallah and the meanings to have in one’s heart when repeating those words.

In this last Jumua of Ramadan 1442 (2021) with only a few days left of this blessed month, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus provides several gems of parting advice. He begins with a discussion of the Divine Gentleness in which the obligatory fast is presented in the Qur’an (2:183-85) and the etiquettes one should have with Allah the Exalted (2:186). He then explains why muraqaba (vigilance) leads to comprehensive good. And finally, he tells us what intentions we should make in these last few days.

As the last ten nights of Ramadan approach and believers actively seek the blessed Laylatul Qadr (Night of Great Worth), Ustadh Amjad Tarsin reminds us that the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ was to strive even harder in ibadah (worship) during this time, anticipating the unique Divine gifts that are possible. He also mentions how to make oneself ready to receive these gifts and recites several powerful du’as particular to this time, recognizing that Allah the Exalted always has infinitely more to give.

As we enter the second ten days of Ramadan, the days of forgiveness, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus explains Imam al-Ghazali’s three degrees of fasting: the fast of the common folk, the fast of the elect, and the fast of the elect of the elect. Shaykh Yahya focuses on the fast of the elect (or righteous) and its six practices to encourage us to strive for a higher level of fasting and its potential rewards. He also mentions the greatest sign that an act is accepted by Allah the Exalted and gives a du’a (supplication) to recite asking for this acceptance.

“The seeker is not truly a seeker until he finds in the Qur’an all that seeks.” As this blessed month of Ramadan begins, it is a good time to access our relationship with the Qur’an. It has been said that to gage one’s state with Allah the Exalted, one should look at his or her connectiveness with the Qur’an. In this Khubah, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin relates an inspiring story of a Companion whose recitation of the Qur’an drew angels near to him. He also explains what one can do to connect, reconnect, or enhance one’s connection with the Qur’an.

After discussing the virtues of Ramadan and the fruits of fasting, Ustadh Amjad provides a list of practical steps to prepare oneself and one’s environment in order to enhance one’s ability to take advantage of the unique blessings this sacred month offers.

He discusses the other traits of good character that rise from it, as well as the bad character traits that arise when there is an imbalance and the trait of cowardness or its opposite, recklessness, dominates.

“Learning has a beginning but it doesn’t have an end.” Shaykh Yahya Rhodus continues his short series on the rights of Muslims on other Muslims looking at three rights that Imam al-Haddad (d. 1132 AH/1720 CE) emphasized. He also relates two beautiful stories about Sayyidina Umar ibn Khattab, radi Allahu anhu, illustrating the practical application of fulfilling these rights.

“The sanctity of a believer is greater than the Ka’bah itself.” In preparation for Ramadan and over the next several weeks, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus will be focusing on the rights of Muslims on other Muslims. This topic is especially important because Allah the Exalted does not forgive a sin unless the wronged person has forgiven the sin.

“Glory be to the One Who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We may show him some of Our signs. Indeed, He alone is the All-Hearing, All-Seeing.” [Quran 17:1] Of the most significant events that occurred in the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the Isra’ wa’l Mi‘raj (the Night Journey and Heavenly Ascension). On this night, the Prophet’s heart ﷺ was washed and he traveled to Jerusalem where he led all the Prophets and Messengers in prayer. He then ascended the seven heavens, arrived at the Furthest Lote Tree, and was entered into the Divine Presence where Allah the Exalted honored him and granted his Umma the five daily prayers. As the 27th of Rajab approaches, the night our beloved Messenger ﷺ traveled to Jerusalem and ascended into the Divine Presence, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus reminds us of the tremendous blessing of believing in the Unseen, the first pillar of taqwa (see Surah Baqara, 2:3). He explains how belief in the Unseen is necessarily connected with the belief and love of the Messenger ﷺ. And because we believe in the Messenger ﷺ without ever seeing him, he longs to meet us and will wait for us at the basin, alhamdulillah.

Our ultimate goal is to know Allah the Exalted in this world and to be near Him, in eternal bliss, in the next. It has been to said, “Don’t ask about a man, ask about his friends.” In this reflection, Shaykh Yahya discusses the importance of carefully choosing one’s companionship in this life as it impacts the next. He mentions the hadith about the three traits of the people whom one should seek, as well as the significance of the dog who was with the companions of the cave (Surah al-Kahf, 18:18, 18:22).

As year 2020 of the Gregorian calendar comes to a close, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus reminds us of the blessings of faith (iman) and the blessing of viewing the world from a faith-based perspective. In this next Khutba, continuing with the five foundational hadith upon which Islam is built, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin discusses the well-known hadith narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim which states, "That which is lawful is clear and that which is forbidden is clear, and between the two of them are doubtful matters about which many people do not know. Thus he who avoids doubtful matters clears himself in regard to his religion and his honor, but he who falls into doubtful matters [eventually] falls into that which is unlawful...Truly in the body there is a morsel of flesh, which, if it is sound, the entire body is sound; but, if it is corrupt, the entire body is corrupt. Truly, it is the heart." Among other things, Ustadh Amjad explains the concept of wara’ or scrupulousness, in part by recounting the story of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, may Allah Ta’ala be pleased with him, who exemplified this virtue at a young age. In this extremely useful session, Sh. Yahya Rhodus explains the context in which Imam al-Ghazali places reflection (tafakkur) and how the Imam categorizes different aspects of it into a logical framework. What is impermissible to reflect upon and what is most beneficial is also discussed, as well as practical suggestions on how to begin to implement reflection towards the goal of witnessing Allah the Exalted.

This final session on the Sunna of Reflection from Book 39 of Imam al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din focuses on reflecting upon the signs on the earth and in the heavens. When studying and contemplating the signs and meanings within Allah's creation, one ascends in the degrees of reflection, which helps the seeker attain knowledge of Allah the Blessed and Exalted.

Allah the Exalted tells us multiple times in the Qur’an that no one can escape death. In this Khutba, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus discusses the importance of preparing for death’s consequences by striving for the higher levels of certainty so that, at the moment of death, one’s faith is absolutely firm and one longs to meet his Lord. To test the strength of one’s certainty, he provides five signs to look for in oneself.

Ustadh Amjad Tarsin reminds us that Rabi’ al-Awwal—the birth month of our beloved Messenger, blessings and peace be upon—is soon approaching. In anticipation of this beautiful occasion, he relates four things to do in order to see the Prophet ﷺ in one’s dreams, in shaʾ Allah.

Sh. Yahya Rhodus translates a poem of love and praise of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by a great knower of Allah the Exalted, al-Habib Ali bin Muhammad al-Habashi, who died in 1333 AH (1915 CE). He points out that the righteous all over the traditional Muslim world say the same things and ask for the same things, and he stresses the importance of understanding this discourse.

The only line repeated three times in the Ḍiyā al-Lāmiʿ Mawlid is the following: "O Lord, gather us and our loved ones in Your abode of Firdaws, O You Who are our only hope" In this uplifting talk, Sh. Yahya Rhodus discusses a Hadith Qudsi (Divine saying) in which Allah the Exalted tells us four simple and attainable ways that we can become beloved to Him.

Iman, faith, is the greatest of all gifts, and Allah the Exalted only gives faith to those whom He loves. It is incumbent upon us to preserve this great blessing and to strengthen it. Strengthening one’s iman leads to a related concept of certitude (yaqīn), which has various degrees. In this Khutba, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus discusses the three main levels of certainty and provides four ways to increase one’s certainty with the ultimate goal of drawing nearer and nearer to Allah the Exalted.

Shaykh Yahya Rhodus discusses the importance of establishing and preserving the five daily prayers, especially praying in congregation (Salat al-Jamā’a) and in particular with respect to the 'Isha and Fajr prayers. Six benefits of praying in congregation are mentioned, along with several hadiths and stories of the righteous that demonstrate the more one’s life revolves around the prayers, the better one’s life will be.

In this relevant and extremely beneficial Khutba, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin discusses what we should do in this time when there are so many inversions in morality, knowledge, and the natural ways Allah the Exalted has taught us to be. He bases his discussion on the Hadith of Jibril, peace be upon him, and verses from the Qur’an (4:64-65 & 49:1-2) and gives three practical steps that can help us to protect ourselves and our families.

“The melodies are there to help you reflect on the meanings.” With these few words, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus reminds us that the weekly Mawlid is far more than just listening to uplifting rhythms or gathering together socially. Rather, we are preparing ourselves to be with the Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, in the next life, along with his Companions and the righteous servants of Allah the Exalted, may Allah be pleased with them all.

As the 8th day of the blessed set of ten days in this sacred month of Muharram comes to a close, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus reminds us to follow the Hijri Calendar because it helps us to remember those special days and times when small deeds reap great rewards. Sh. Yahya discusses the immense benefits of bringing the Day of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, to life through fasting and interacting with people graciously. He also explains why the Muslims have a greater “right” to Musa (Moses), peace be upon him, more than anyone.

On this second day of Muharram, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus discusses the weight given to good character on the Day of Judgment, and in particular, to the virtue of humility—the “adornment of the believer.” Focusing on verse 83 of Surah al-Qasas (28:83) and several hadith, Shaykh Yahya explains what is meant by humility and a few traits related to it. He also provides a long list of practical ways to foster humility in oneself. The Khutbah ends with the benefits of fasting in Muharram, especially on the tenth.

These lessons are based on a book by Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi titled 'Remedy for the Hearts,' where the author expounds on the Prophetic duʿa that is known as the preeminent formulaʿfor seeking Allah's forgiveness (Sayyid al-Istighfar). Topics covered include: the definition of and conditions for repentance, some of the meanings included in Sayyid al-Istighfar, and the virtues of seeking Allah's forgiveness. In this first of nine sessions, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin discusses several verses in the Qur’an related to repentance and explains why repentance is the foundation of the spiritual path. He also covers the conditions of repentance, showing that it is far more than a verbal declaration by the tongue.

In this second session on Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi’s book, 'Remedy for the Hearts,' Ustadh Amjad Tarsin discusses several Prophetic narrations showing the importance of asking Allah the Exalted for forgiveness and turning towards Him in repentance. Special focus is given to the long hadith concerning the “Three who stayed behind” from the battle of Tabuk, and why the Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, told them after Allah the Exalted accepted their repentance: “This is the best day of your life since the day your mother gave birth to you.”

After looking at selected examples from the Quran and Hadith extolling the virtues of repentance (tawba) in the first and second sessions, respectively, Ustadh Amjad begins the text of the book by Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi titled 'Remedy for the Hearts' where the author expounds on the preeminent formula for seeking Allah's forgiveness known as Sayyid al-Istighfar. Topics in this third session include the story behind the writing of the book, the definition of repentance, and the conditions necessary for one’s repentance to be accepted.

In his book 'Remedy for the Hearts,' Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi provides a systematic approach to perfecting one’s repentance that is easily understood and followed. In this fourth session, Ustadh Amjad reviews the next three sections of Habib Ahmed’s book: how to make one’s repentance permanent; two motivating causes for repentance, and ways to bring motivation that leads to awareness of the heart. Supplications that aid in helping to achieve an accepted repentance are also mentioned.

In this fifth lesson discussing Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi’s book 'Remedy for the Hearts,' Ustadh Amjad Tarsin begins the main section of the book, which looks in detail at Sayyid al-Istighfar, the preeminent formula for seeking Allah's forgiveness as taught by our beloved Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him. Ustadh Amjad Tarsin continues looking at the main section of Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi’s book 'Remedy for the Hearts.' This lesson focuses on meanings relating to the relationship between Allah the Exalted and His servants. Among the things discussed are human’s four enemies, the Prophet's intercession ﷺ, and the origin of thoughts and how to deal with bad thoughts.

In his book 'Remedy for the Hearts,' Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi gives a clear and insightful discussion concerning the statement of gratitude found in Sayyid al-Istighfar, the preeminent formula for seeking Allah's forgiveness: “I acknowledge Your favors upon me...” Ustadh Amjad Tarsin focuses on this section of the book and covers such topics as: our greatest blessings; types of gratitude; what being “immersed in witnessing the Giver of the blessings” means; and the connection between two verses in the Qur’an mentioned by Habib Ahmad, 14:34 and 16:18.

In this eighth session based on Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi’s book 'Remedy for the Hearts,' Ustadh Amjad Tarsin continues to look at aspects of Sayyid al-Istighfar that relate to Islam, Iman, and Ihsan. He then covers the next section of the book which discusses why this supplication is considered the preeminent Prophetic formula for seeking Allah's forgiveness, paying particular attention to the meaning of ‘Allahumma,’ the first word. The discussion ends with the adab of making du’a (supplication), using this formula as an example.

Before commenting on the last section of Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi’s book 'Remedy for the Hearts,' Ustadh Amjad Tarsin notes that the Summer Retreat 2020 is ending on a blessed day, the last Jumu’a the Hijri year. Scholars and the righteous ask for forgiveness and the acceptance of good deeds at the conclusion of something. Ustadh Amjad then turns to the final chapter of Habib Ahmad’s book, which discusses the virtues and benefits of seeking forgiveness, based on numerous verses in the Quran, and which provides a comprehensive list of powerful supplications asking for forgiveness, including the preeminent formula Sayyid al-Istighfar, the topic of this work. Ustadh Amjad mentions over ten supplications, noting when they should be recited and the particular benefit gained by their recitation.

In this fifth and final session, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus discusses the remaining five of the ten steps to elevate the level of Islamic Discourse that Habib Umar Bin Hafiz identifies in his book 'The Islamic Discourse in Religious Institutions: its Current State and Future Development.' Shaykh Yahya pays special attention to the sixth step, which concerns showing respect for various fields of expertise in general and for the field of issuing fatwas in particular. He also explains why every single Muslim in the United States has a responsibility to positively impact the society for the sake of Allah the Exalted and how that duty can be accomplished.

In the final two sessions, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus discusses the last section of Habib Umar Bin Hafiz’s book 'The Islamic Discourse in Religious Institutions: its Current State andFuture Development,' which provides ten steps to elevate the level of Islamic Discourse in light of current challenges. In Part 1, Shaykh Yahya covers the first five steps. He also explains the extremely important difference between renewal (tajdīd) versus reform, the former recognizing that the religious texts (Quran, Hadith) and established religious principles, which not require any development. Indeed, by remaining faithful traditional texts and principles is what allows institutions to deal with the challenges of the time.

The next session in Habib Umar Bin Hafiz’s book 'The Islamic Discourse in Religious Institutions: its Current State andFuture Development,' discusses five principles of success in Islamic discourse that correspond to the first seven verses in Surah al-Muddathir (The Cloaked One, 74:1-7). According to the author, may Allah preserve him, these are the qualities that the All-Merciful commanded His Messenger, blessings and peace be upon him, to have when entrusted with carrying, conveying, warning, and clarifying the Message revealed to him.

Shaykh Yahya Rhodus continues his discussion of Habib Umar Bin Hafiz’s book titled, 'The Islamic Discourse in Religious Institutions: its Current State andFuture Development.' Here, two chapters of the book are covered: (1) The Integrity of the Discourse is Dependent Upon the Integrity of the Individual and (2) The Most Evident Means for Success. Practical advice is provided on how to raise the level of discourse on both institutional and individual levels.

In this five-part series Shaykh Yahya Rhodus discusses selected excerpts from Habib Umar Bin Hafiz’s treatise titled 'The Islamic Discourse in Religious Institutions: its Current State and Future Development.' The series explores important principles for institutions involved in serving the religion. Topics include: the primary mission of religious institutions, the most prominent means for impact, the integrity of the discourse and its relation to the integrity of the individual, and practical suggestions on how to improve the state of the discourse. In this first session, Shaykh Yahya covers the primary mission of religious institutions and the methodology to implement it. He also discusses six factors that that an institution needs to positively impact the state of the Ummah and what an institution must avoid so people are not prevented from understanding the reality of Islam and beholding its beauty and splendor.

Allah the Exalted teaches us in the Noble Quran, "And say, 'My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.'" [Quran 20:114] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ also taught us, further emphasizing the virtue of sacred knowledge, "Whoever Allah wills good for, He grants him understanding of the religion." [Bukhari and Muslim] This Khutba focuses on the virtue of seeking knowledge and the importance of seeking it with sincerity. May Allah revive sacred knowledge in our communities, adorn our hearts with the qualities of the Beloved Prophet ﷺ, and allow the lights of guidance to illuminate the hearts of many others in need.

Shaykh Yahya Rhodus discusses a statement from Habib Ahmad bin Zayn al-Habashi (d. 1144 AH, 1732 CE), one of foremost students of Imam al-Haddad, in which he gives advice to travelers on the spiritual path. In this passage, Habib Ahmad counsels the wayfarer to stand vigilantly at the door of Allah the Exalted, even if he or she is initially rejected or distanced. No matter how difficult things may get, one should never lose hope in the Mercy of Allah the Exalted.

When Eid al-Adha falls on Jumu’a, there are two Eids to celebrate, cumulating in an especially auspicious occasion. On this blessed day, Ustadh Amjad Tarsin reflects on several verses in the Quran that mention the Hajj and the remembrance and glorification of Allah. He explains how these verses help to prepare us for what Imam al-Haddad describes as the long journey to the Hereafter. Through remembrance of Allah our hearts come to life, which is the true Eid.

In his Farewell Sermon on Mount Arafat given on the ninth of Dhul-Hijja, shortly before his return to Allah the Exalted, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that a white person has no superiority over a black person, nor a black person over a white, except by his or her degree of taqwa (piety).
