Perimenopausal Depression: Unique Form of Depression Calls for an Alternative Approach with Dr. ...

Studies show that anywhere from 20%–40% of perimenopausal women will experience depression.Perimenopause usually occurs between ages 35-50. Wolynn says you need to work through the traumas in your family and pull engagement away from the trauma cycle. Create a new experience, so that you're not perpetuating that cycle. One example Wolynn gives is that of a young woman who was a severe cutter. She would cut herself so deep that she would almost bleed out. When asked why, she responded, "I deserve to die." After digging deeper into her family history, Wolynn learnd that her grandmother was an alcoholic. One night, she was driving and caused an accident where the young woman's grandfather was sent through the windshield, cut with glass, and bled out. Superwoman Syndrome: Stop the Stress

What is Superwoman Syndrome and how does it affect how women deal with stress?According to research out of Yale’s Interdisciplinary Stress Center, both men and women experience what’s known as the common stress “fight-or-flight” reaction, but women experience an increased arousal in the sympathetic nervous system. This results in increased heart rate and an adrenaline rush, which is associated with higher anxiety. Women also experience stress on more of an emotional level. This can lead to challenging behavior problems, such as not exercising and craving carbohydrates, which in turn contributes to more stress-related illnesses including obesity, heart disease, diabetes and depression.Although chronic stress is a tough issue for woman to address, it can easily be fixed with small changes.Listen in as James LaValle, RPh, CCN, joins Dr. Susanne to share tips to ease the daily stress of being a superwoman.

Epigenetics: How Environment Shapes Your Genes

What is epigenetics and how does it influence your genes? How can one "identical" twin have a disorder of sexual development, while the other appears perfectly normal? Aren't they supposed to be genetic clones? The answer comes from the burgeoning science of epigenetics.Epigenetics is the study of long-term alterations in gene behavior, caused by chemical changes in DNA. These changes, often triggered by environmental factors, don't affect genes themselves, but rather the extent to which they are expressed. Some epigenetic changes can be inherited directly, just like genetic mutations. Others are transmitted indirectly — through, for example, nature-nurture feedback loops.Dr. Richard C. Francis, a neuro-biologist by training, has written what may be the first popular introduction to the subject: Epigenetics: The Ultimate Mystery of Inheritance. Francis says he had long been interested in "the nature-nurture dichotomy and why it was unsatisfactory."Listen in as Dr. Francis joins Dr. Susanne to discuss the science behind epigenetics and how our environment shapes our genes.

BRCA: Myth vs. Reality

Learn more about common myths surrounding genetic testing for breast cancer.People with a family history of breast cancer often seek genetic testing to find out whether they carry mutations on key genes called BRCA1 and BRCA2. These genes may increase risk for breast cancer and other diseases.BRCA1 and BRCA2 are human genes that produce tumor suppressor proteins. These proteins help repair damaged DNA and play a role in ensuring the stability of the cell’s genetic material. When either of these genes is mutated or altered in such a way that its protein product either is not made or does not function correctly, DNA damage may not be repaired properly. As a result, cells are more likely to develop additional genetic alterations that can lead to cancer. However, misconceptions about how these mutations are passed down — and about what the tests themselves mean — can get in the way of sound decision-making. Listen in as Heather Sulzbach, MS, ANP-C, AOCN-P, joins Dr. Susanne to help clear the air about a few common myths concerning BRCA1 and BRCA2.

The Over-Sanitization of Our Kids

Science reveals that the things we thought we had to protect our kids from are the things that make them healthy: the bacteria, viruses, and parasites that are the stuff of dirt.As our culture becomes more germophobic than ever, new science reveals that the things we thought we had to protect our kids from are the things that make them healthy: the bacteria, viruses, and parasites that are the stuff of dirt. Dr. Maya Shetreat-Klein's new book, The Dirt Cure, explores the groundbreaking research about why DIRT can heal kids’ ills -- from eczema and ear infections to anxiety and ADHD -- and how keep your healthy kids (really, truly) well.Dr. Shetreat-Klein joins Dr. Susanne to reveal the three principals that are critical for a healthy child: Germs: Children’s immune systems no longer get exposed to enough bacteria and other microbes that prime the immune system to be healthy. Soil Sourced Foods: Nutrient-dense food infused with sunshine, fresh air, and clean water, rich with vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, and beneficial bacteria (all derived from the soil) provides integral building blocks from nature critical for children’s bodies and brains. Nature Kids who take walks in parks or play in green playgrounds have improved attention spans, lowered ADHD, have better test performance and are happier and calmer than their peers who spend their time inside. Spending time outside boosts children’s immune system function measurably.

Why You Need Cholesterol

For many years, cholesterol has been the "bad guy" in the fight against heart disease. For many years, cholesterol has been the "bad guy" in the fight against heart disease.Dr. Jonny Bowden, an expert in cholesterol and heart health, knows that to be a myth. The truth is that your body requires cholesterol for brain health, immunity, and general vitality. Cholesterol doesn't cause heart disease; it doesn't even promote heart disease. One of the key problems in keeping this myth alive is that the blood tests generally measure according to 1950s technology. It's not as simple as detecting your LDL and HDL levels. In fact, there are five different kinds of HDL and five different kinds of LDL.Dr. Bowden says that instead of keeping cholesterol as the culprit, we should focus on lowering the risk factors for heart disease, such as triglycerides, blood sugar, and inflammation (which is the biggest promoter of heart disease, as well as every other degenerative disease).Listen in as Dr. Bowden joins Dr. Susanne to share more about this great cholesterol myth, as well as the importance of getting enough "smart fats" into your daily diet.

Signs of Chronic Kidney Disease in Kids

If your child is experiencing bed-wetting, poor growth, poor appetite, slow weight gain, and lack of energy, it may be a kidney issue.Pediatric kidney disease is not as common as adult kidney disease, but the long-term ramifications can be debilitating. However, if early intervention occurs, most kids won't go on to experience eventual kidney failure. Some of the symptoms of kidney disease in children include bed-wetting, poor growth, poor appetite, slow weight gain, and lack of energy.
