With a ghostly presence and unsolved mystery unravelling before us, we get the best of haunting 90s horror in Stir of Echoes (1999) written and directed by David Koepp. This is a film adaptation of the 1958 novel of the same title by Richard Matheson, which is really adding to the layers of what happened and why in this film. I want to tell you my secret now. Earlier this week we shared a stack of VHS Films on our Instagram hinting that one of them would be the topic for Episode 37! We sat down and watched The Sixth Sense in the dark, on a tiny television with a built-in VCR, slumber party style! There is truly no better way to enjoy this 1999 release from M. Night Shymalan than listening to the hum of a VCR as you sit in terror, waiting for the next ghost to reveal itself to Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) and to us, as his mother Lynn Sear (Toni Collette) and Cole’s recently assigned psychologist, Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) sit back in disbelief as Cole slowly disintegrates. Something Horrible is happening inside of me and I don’t know why. This week’s all-American delight is starring everyone’s favourite Wall Street Psychopath, Patrick Bateman. Directed by Mary Harron and released in 2000, American Psycho is based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis that walks the fine line between delusion and reality with a lot of blood in between. Patrick is fixated on blending in with his surroundings and insists on appearing superior in every way to everyone he meets. We promised an episode that was absolutely MENTAL and that is why our choice for episode 35 had to be Session 9, the 2001 release from director Brad Anderson! In this Horrible tale, a crew of asbestos removers accept an impossible job on a short deadline to try and earn a much-needed bonus at the end of their job. The location: None other than an abandoned and decaying insane asylum.* The set is real with no medical props provided. What begins as a straight-forward job, foreman Gordon “Gordy” Fleming (Peter Mullan) is overworked and stressed as he loses a grip on his home life and it begins to reflect in his sense of reality with every work day that passes. His right hand, Phil (David Caruso) begins to notice something is afoot but can’t quite see the depth of the situation at hand. *Session 9 was filmed in a real, abandoned insane asylum in 2001. The Danvers State Insane Asylum stood abandoned for many years and was able to serve as the set for this incredible film. With a slight twist in the story where the angered spirit attaches itself to someone and claims a new home in America, the film clung on to some aspects of the original story while rewriting other angles all together.
