Queen Elizabeth I’s Suitors & Lovers, 2/2: Courting a Queen

Elizabeth I of England and Ireland reigned for 45 years over a golden age of peace, prosperity and flourishing art and culture. And she shocked the medieval world by doing it all without a man. But that certainly wasn’t for lack of proposals. Elizabeth had at least 16 suitors in her lifetime. In the last episode we met the suitors of her youth, whose ambitions twice landed Elizabeth in the tower. At her coronation Elizabeth declared that she was married to her kingdom and would live and die a virgin. But nobody believed her. Today we’ll meet the English lords and foreign royals who fell over themselves in their attempts to win the Queen’s hand. Through it all, one man, Robert Dudley remained by her side. We’ll take a closer look at their intimate friendship and investigate the claim that they might have had a secret love child... Part 2: Courting an Queen: Henry Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel Sir William Pickering James Hamilton, Earl of Arran Eric XIV, King of Sweden Frederick II, King of Denmark & Norway Henri III, King of France, King of Poland & Grand Duke of Lithuania Charles II, Archduke of Austria François, Duke of Anjou Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Queen Elizabeth I’s Suitors & Lovers, 1/2: Proposing to a Princess

In her youth men were eager to take advantage of her and their ambitions landed Elizabeth in the tower of London. But when she was Queen, Elizabeth turned the table on the many men eager to win her hand. She played them against each other and dangled herself as a prize they could never quite win. Over this 2 part series we’ll meet the English Lords and European royals who pursued her majesty, and the one man she truly loved through it all. And examine that age old question, was the virgin Queen really a virgin? Part 1: Proposing to a Princess: Charles de Valois, Duke of Angoulme & Orléans Adolf, Prince of Denmark & Duke of Holstein-Gottorp Thomas Seymour, Baron of Sudeley Edward Courtenay, Earl of Devon Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy Carlos, Prince of Asturias Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester Philip II, King of Spain Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Black Aristocrats of 18th Century England & France

Popular historic dramas like Bridgerton, Hamilton and Sanditon sometimes receive criticism that their diverse casts are historically inaccurate. But in fact there have been people of color in Britain and France since Roman times. By the 18th century the trans Atlantic slave trade brought more people of African decent to Europe then ever before. In 1768 there were about 15,000 black people living in London. Many were brought their as enslaved servants and sailors. But some had the right mixture of talent and luck to rise to the upper echelons of society, becoming celebrities and even aristocrats. Today we’ll met 7 prominent people of African and mixed heritage who lived in Britain or France in the 18th Century. Among them a King’s secret daughter, an icon of both Sport and music, two authors who spoke out against slavery, and a lady of wealth and refinement who would have fit perfectly into the world of Bridgerton. Here are their stories... Monarchs with the Most Monogamous Marriages

In many countries where polygamy is practiced, Kings and emperors have had harems of hundred or even thousands of wives and concubines. It’s good to be the King. But in Europe, Christianity has reigned for a millennia and the church is pretty sticked on their one woman at a time policy. But that didn’t stop a handful of monarchs from taking multiple trips down the aisle. Royal brides were under a lot of pressure to produce as many heirs as possible, and they died often in childbirth or because their bodies were warn out from constant pregnancy. If a monarch wasn’t getting the heirs he wanted from his wife, or if he had grown tired of her and she hadn’t done him the courtesy of dying, there was always divorce or even murder to clear the throne for another consort to take her place. Many rulers managed to marry 3 times, but today we’ll be counting down 6 serial monogamist monarchs who had 4 or marriages. Philip II, King of Spain, 1527 – 1598, 4 wives William the Silent, Prince of Orange & Ruler of The Netherlands, 1533 – 1584, 4 wives Ferdinand VII, King of Spain, 1784 – 1833, 4 wives Władysław II Jagiełło, King of Poland & Grand Duke of Lithuania 4 wives Henry VIII, King of England, 1491 – 1547, 6 wives Ivan the Terrible, Tsar of Russia, 1530 – 1584, 6-8 wives Honorable Mentions: Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor, 4 wives, 5 Concubines Casimir III the Great, King of Poland, 4 wives Catherine Parr, Queen of England, 4 Husbands Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Queen Victoria's Christmas Feast

In addition to being the Queen of the United Kingdom and the vast British Empire, Victoria might also be lauded as the Queen of Christmas. She and her beloved husband Prince Albert popularized many of the quintessential holiday traditions that we still enjoy today including the Christmas tree, Christmas cards and Christmas Crackers. Their 9 children enjoyed trees decorated with delectable dainties like sugar plums, candy canes and gingerbread. And many new delicious dishes were added to the traditional medieval fare on the royal holiday dining table including roast Turkey, chestnuts and plum pudding. Let’s take a look at the history of how these holiday foods made it on to her majesty’s table and enjoy a fabulously festive feast, fit for a Queen. Royal Nazis

Private family footage from 1933 was leaked to the press which shows a 6 year old future Queen Elizabeth II, with her mother, younger sister and uncle laughing and giving Nazi salutes to the camera. A rebellious 20 year old Prince Harry got in hot water for wearing a Nazi uniform to a party he attended with his brother. The British royals would very much like to forget their many family connections to Germany in the early 20th century and to Adolph Hitler himself. But the fact remains that the connections are numerous and fascinating. Let’s take a look at the British royal who started WWI resulting in the rise of Nazism, the many British and German royals who supported Hitler in the hopes of regaining their lost thrones, and a few who stood up to the Fuhrer, even to the point of being sent to concentration camps or murdered by the Gestapo. Dollar Princesses

In the late 1800s, American industrialists were raking in cash and living like princes, but they had no way, other than their mansions, servants and yachts, of making it clear that they were better than everyone else. Meanwhile, across the pond, the British aristocracy had come on hard times. They still had their titles, historic estates and aire of superiority, but they were running low on funds. This became a match made somewhere south of heaven when hundreds of American heiresses married cash-strapped British noblemen. Millions of dowry dollars crossed the pond to renovate ancient English mansions and bolster the ailing peerage, while American fathers got to brag that they had a baroness or a duchess in the family. There was even a magazine, “The Titled American” in which British nobles with a title to sell could advertise their eligibility to rich American ladies. But marriages based on exchanging cash for coronets weren’t always destined to be happy. Let’s get to know five of the American women who became Dollar Princesses... A History of Horror - Witches, Ghosts, Werewolves & Horror Comedy

Happy almost Halloween, Everyone! For those of you who have been following my channel since the early days, you might recall that I started off doing much spookier content. I love Halloween and horror, though I tend to veer more spooking and supernatural than gory. Back in 2018 I did a series exploring the evolution of 8 different horror tropes, from their ancient origins, to their modern pop culture afterlives. Last week I dug up up this the history of Vampires, The Devil, Zombies and Killers. Today I'll conjure up Witches, Ghosts, Werewolves and Horror Comedy. Back in 2018 I did a series exploring the evolution of 8 different horror tropes, from their ancient origins, to their modern pop culture afterlives. Today I will dig up this treasured series and explore the history of Vampires, The Devil, Zombies and Killers. Next week we’ll unearth Witches, Ghosts, Werewolves and Horror Comedy. Ghastly Tales of Tudor Ghosts

The Tudors ruled over England from the unlikely battlefield victory of King Henry VII in 1485; through the 6 wives of heinous Henry VIII and his three children’s desperate fights over the throne; to the agonizing death of the magnificent Queen Elizabeth I in 1603. The family’s tragic interpersonal drama, and penchant for beheading anyone who got in their way have inspired a number of chilling ghost stories. So lock the door, turn down the lights, light a candle and pour yourself a bloody Mary. Together, lets step briefly off the relatively firm ground of historic record and into the misty realms of legend, hearsay and the supernatural as we recount the Ghastly Ghost Stories of the Terrible Tudors... 3 Queens of The Netherlands: Wilhelmina, Juliana & Beatrix

Male-preference primogeniture and salic law have meant that most European monarchs have been men. Queen regnants are exceedingly rare in history. But for 90 years from 1890 to 1980 The Netherlands was reigned over by three successive Queens. Wilhelmina inherited the throne after the early deaths of all three of her brothers, Juliana because she was an only child and Beatrix because she was the eldest of 4 sisters. These Queens were heroes of the first and second world wars, the first female billionaires, courted controversy with their choices of husbands and friends and won the admiration of their people with their down-to-earth style. Let’s meet the three Queens of the Netherlands. Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana & Queen Beatrix. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Queen Guinevere & The Women of Arthurian Legend

Queen Guinevere, Morgan le Fey and Nimue, the mystical lady of the lake have been cast as heroins, virtuous women and wicked femme fatals by the many people who have retold the legend of King Arthur over 1500 years. I'll sketch the highlights of the story, galloping past the oft retold battles and quests of the knights of the round table and focusing on the many parts women had to play. Then take a look at the way the legend morphed through the passage of time and some of the reverberation the inhabitants of the Camelot have had on real history. Queens Who Had The Most Children

If you think the kids in your family are a lot to handle, imagine having over a dozen of them! That was the reality for the royal women in today’s video. The primary expectation of Queens and other well born women of the past was to have as many children as possible to secure their husband’s dynasty and bare a few spares to be used in advantageous political marriages. Their fertility was their life. They were married early and caught on a treadmill of pregnancy, birth, handing their babies over to be raised by wet-nurses and tutors, and hoping back into bed to conceive again as soon as possible. Surely they looked forward to the relief of menopause. Here are 9 Queens and Empresses who bore an extraordinary number of children: Mumtaz Mahal, Mughal Empress Consort - 14 Children Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen Consort of Great Britain & Ireland - 15 Children Anna Jagellonica, Queen Consort of Germany, Bohemia & Hungary - 15 Children Eleanor of Castile, Queen Consort of England - 16 Children Keran, Queen Consort of Armenia - 16 Children Maria Theresa, Holy Roman Empress - 16 Children Maria Carolina of Austria, Queen Consort of Naples and Sicily - 17 Children Anne, Queen of Great Britain - 18 Children Darejan Dadiani, Queen Consort of Georgia - 23 Children Maria Theresa's Daughters: https://youtu.be/vlLI1bp6BeA https://youtu.be/mtvFd_ciI5Y Maria Theresa's Sons: https://youtu.be/S1lp9qMACfo Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! The 6 to 8 Wives of Ivan the Terrible

What 16th century megalomaniac monarch magnified the power of his nation, ordered the violent executions of thousands of his own people, became obsessed with fathering male heirs and went through at least 6 wives, several of whom were murdered? Why Ivan the Terrible, Tsar of Russia of course! In fact he outdid Henry VIII of England in many terrible ways, including having not 6 wives but as many as 8. 2 Slavic Queens: Olga of Kyiv (Ukraine) & Jadwiga of Poland

Olga was the wive of Igor, the Grand Prince of the Kievan Rus’, a federation of people whose capital was the city of Kyiv, now the capital of modern day Ukraine. When her husband was brutally murdered by a subsidiary tribe, Olga went on a legendary campaign of cunning and ruthless revenge. Once in control of her husband’s kingdom, she was an efficient and effective leader. She converted to Christianity in order to get out of an unwanted marriage proposal. She is credited with introducing Christianity to the Rus people. After her death, Olga was canonized as a saint and is regarded as “Equal to the Apostles” within the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. Jadwiga, Female King of Poland was crowned at the age of 10. She grew wise beyond her years and was forced to make a difficult decision about who to marry – a young man she liked or an old man who would Christianize his country for her. Though she reigned for only 15 years she did a great deal of good and is considered one of the greatest monarchs in Polish history. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! LGBTQ Queens, Princesses & Duchesses

Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈 Through most of history homosexuality and gender non-conformity were met with misunderstanding and intolerance. And while men in power had some modicum of freedom to pursue their own desires, women’s sexuality and identity was much more tightly controlled. Lesbian relationships were conducted in secret or explained as “intense friendships”. And women who didn’t conform to traditional gender politics were puzzled over and vilified. Here are the stories of 8 royal and noble women from history whose sexuality and/or identity went against the grain: Crown Princess Sun-bin Bong of Joseon Duchess Margaret of Parma Queen Christina of Sweden Duchess Hortense Mancini Queen Anne of Great Britain Princess Isabella of Bourbon-Parma Duchess Luisa Isabel Álvarez de Toledo Princess Abigail Kawānanakoa of Hawaii Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Royalty 101: Harems & Palace Women

The royal and imperial courts of Asia had complex systems of female hierarchy. The ruler’s wives and female relatives were at the top, and a great many other ladies were there to serve them. Similar to the ladies in waiting of European royal courts, these women cared for the rooms and wardrobes of higher ranking women, assist them in hygiene and grooming; and entertain them, keep them company, act as their secretaries and pass on all the latest gossip, crucial to palace intrigue. In Islamic empires, these women were collectively known as the harem. Anglo-phonic historians also use the term Harem or Palace Women to refer to the ladies of the Imperial courts of East Asia. In Christian Europe, Kings were supposed to be faithful to their Queens, but they still got up to plenty of hanky-panky with the court ladies. But in Asia, where polygamy was common practice, all court ladies were available to the monarch for sexual services, and if they took the Emperor’s fancy, even the lowest born woman could be promoted to concubine, consort or even Empress. Let’s take a look at the evolution, duties, ranks and lives of the Harem and Palace women of the imperial courts of China, Japan and the Ottoman Empire. Royalty 101: What is a Lady in Waiting?

When discussing the history of royalty, ladies in waiting pop up frequently. King Henry VIII left his first wife Catherine of Aragon for her lady-in-waiting, Anne Boleyn, and then beheaded her for her lady-in-waiting Jane Seymour. Queen Christina of Sweden and her Lady in waiting Ebba Sparre were secret lovers. And when Marie Antionette’s lady-in-waiting was guillotined the Queen was forced to kiss the lips of her friend’s severed head. But these Ladies were doing a lot more than waiting for the monarch to invite them to bed. Let’s take a look at the evolution, duties, ranks and lives of ladies in waiting at the royal courts of Europe. Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Queen Charlotte & King George III's 15 Children

King George III of Great Britain and of Ireland and his German wife, Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz had a close and loving relationship which resulted in an astonishing 15 Children! The couple preferred a quiet life at home to court social life. George was relatively down to earth and far more involved with his children than previous generations of royals. He enjoyed tumbling around on the floor with his brood and playing games with them in the garden. Charlotte loved her children dearly but was more strict and formal than her husband. Having so many royal children was at once a blessing and a curse. If you think Queen Elizabeth’s 4 children cause a lot of scandal and cost tax payers too much money, multiply that by 3.75! And while having an heir and so many spares should have secured the line of succession. But the King and Queen were over-protective of their daughters and resisted allowing them to marry. The called Kew palace the nunnery and had romances with palace staff. The sons were far to interested in their mistresses to contract legal royal marriages and produce legitimate children. Towards the end of King George’s life he didn’t have a single legitimate grandchild, and parliament had to bribe the middle aged princes to finally walk down the aisle. The result was Queen Victoria who had to deal with the bad reputations her many wicked aunts and uncles and some serious family drama. Let’s meet King George and Queen Charlotte’s 9 sons and 6 daughters... King George IV Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany King William IV Charlotte, Queen of Württemberg Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn Princess Augusta Sophia Elizabeth, Landgravine of Hesse-Homburg Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh Princess Sophia Prince Octavius Prince Alfred Princess Amelia Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Queen of Great Britain & Ireland

Just in time for Queen Charlotte: A Bridgeton Story - here is the real story of the iconic Queen! Queen Charlotte went from minor German country gentry to Queen Consort of Great Britain and Ireland. She and George III had a happy marriage and an astonishing 15 children. Charlotte stayed out of politics as her husband lost the American revolution, and she lost her dear friend, Marie Antoinette in the French revolution. Charlotte made numerous cultural contributions including introducing the Christmas tree to Britain and throwing the first debutante ball. In her later years she had to watch as her husband slipped into mental illness and her children struggled to produce a new generation of royals. Problematic Crown Jewels & Coronation Controversies

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is a once in a generation event which will go down in history. But will it go down for all the wrong reasons? The coronation has been surrounded by a number of controversies from what the royals will wear to who will and will not be attending. All of these quarrels really come down to a thousand year old institution, marred in outdated dogma and dripping in stolen jewels, clashing with a modern world in which people no longer revere royalty and many are struggling to live. Add in the fact that the stars of the show, Charles and Camilla are not nearly as well liked as the late Queen or the next generation, Will and Kate and we have a hotbed of coronation controversy. Let’s examine the many centuries old disputes and modern contentious issues which have, so far marred the coronation. Including a few which the media haven’t been picking over, but maybe they should. Plus I'll reveal what Princess Diana's title and role would have been had she lived. The Crown Jewels: Koh-i-Noor Diamond, Cullinan Diamonds, other stolen gems The Stone of Scone, Stone of Destiny Fur The Invitation (Green Man and Queen vs. Queen Consort) The Cost The Coronation Concert Royal Family Controversies Prince Harry & Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex Prince Andrew Who are the working royals? What to Expect at the Coronation of King Charles III & Queen Camilla

Please take my listener survey to help improve the podcast: www.surveymonkey.com/r/airwave  The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will take place on the 6th of May, 2023. The Palace has announced that it will “reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”. The components of the ceremony, taking an oath, anointing, investing of regalia, crowning, enthronement and homage have not altered since King Edgar was crowned in 973. And since 1066 nearly every coronation has taken place in Westminster Abbey and been performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury. But over the 1000 years since, everything from the wording and prayers to the guest list and what they wore has been altered with each new monarch. I’ll use the last two coronations of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937 as a guide. And look a bit into palace announcements and media speculation to guide you through what we are likely to see at the coronation of Charles and Camilla. A History of English & British Coronations

Please take my listener survey to help improve the podcast: www.surveymonkey.com/r/airwave  The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is unique in modern times. The United Kingdom is the only monarchy in Europe which still holds coronations. Today let’s explore the 1000 year evolution of the English and British coronation. From the crown stolen from Edward the Confessors grave, to Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon’s lavish coronation clothes and feast. From making copies of the throne and regalia for the crowning of co-monarchs William and Mary to the outrage of putting Elizabeth II’s coronation on *gasp* television. A History of Coronations: Around the World Today

Please take my listener survey to help improve the podcast: www.surveymonkey.com/r/airwave  The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla is unique in modern times. The United Kingdom is the only monarchy in Europe which still holds coronations. Secularism and revolutions from the enlightenment through the 20th century did away with Europe’s other crowning traditions. No one wanted a coronation when crowned head where getting chopped off. But Britain is not the only modern monarchy which puts a little pomp and pizazz into celebrating the beginning of a new royal reign. Many surviving monarchies outside of Europe still hold traditional coronation and enthronement ceremonies. They are a way to keep history and culture alive, link the mystic chain of dynasty, secure the reign of a new monarch and ensure that their subjects viewed them with proper reverence. Today, we’ll explore fascinating coronation and enthronement traditions going on today in Africa, Asia and Oceania. And find out when and why 11 of Europe’s 12 surviving monarchies stopped (or never started) doing coronations. And what they do instead to commemorate the ascension of a new sovereign. A History of Coronations: From Ancient to Modern Times

Please take my listener survey to help improve the podcast: www.surveymonkey.com/r/airwave  Since ancient times, placing a crown upon a monarch’s head was a powerful symbol. It was believed to bestow a heavenly mandate to rule, or even transform a monarch into a living god. Most people don’t think of King Charles as especially divine. But he also won’t be expected to smite an enemy or walk a marathon around the city as Egyptian Pharaohs did, be asked to publicly defend his claim to the throne like Persian Kings, or lead his army on a months long march to the Vatican like the Holy Roman Emperors. And Camila is unlikely to perform a blood sacrifice and summon a vision serpent, like a Mayan Queen Consort. Let’s explore the evolution of coronations across the world from ancient to modern times. See how different cultural traditions built on each other to create modern ceremonies, and learn how secularism and revolutions have done away with all the other coronations in Europe. Edward VIII & Wallis Simpson

King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry the woman he loved, Wallis Simpson. Their relationship has long been lauded as a royal fairytale. But there was a lot more going on. Wallis never really liked Edward but became trapped by her own ambition. And Edward, desperate to find any mode of escaping the insurmountable pressure of his birth rite, became obsessed with the woman who dominated him. And they were both Nazi sympathizers. The abdication of a King who wasn’t allowed by the church to marry a divorced woman was not nearly that simple. And the crisis that almost ended the British monarchy likely saved it in the end... How Many of Queen Victoria's Descendants had Hemophilia?

Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom was known as the grandmother of Europe. She and her husband Prince Albert had 9 children, 42 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren and 142 great-great-grandchildren. Many of her majesty’s estimated 1,239 total descendants married into royal families across Europe, from Russia to Spain, Norway to Romania and all over Germany. In addition to their royal mama’s short stature, beady eyes and haughty temperament, many of them carried another, more dangerous genetic legacy, hemophilia. This excruciatingly painful, often deadly disorder devastated royal families, caused the early deaths of at least 10 princes and contributed to the downfall of both the Russian and Spanish monarchies. Let’s trace the hemophilia gene along the royal family tree to find out where it came from and how many of the Queen’s descendant’s fell victim to what became known as the royal disease. Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany Prince Friedrich of Hesse and by Rhine Leopold Battenberg Maurice Battenberg Alexei Nikolaevich, Tsarevich of Russia Rupert Cambridge Alfonso, Prince of Asturias Infante Gonzalo Prince Waldemar of Prussia Prince Heinrich of Prussia and more? The 12 Days of Medieval Christmas

We’re familiar with the Christmas carol “The 12 days of Christmas” but in the middle ages, this extended holiday Christmas looked a bit different. There were plenty of lords-a-leaping and ladies dancing but the only partridge was trussed up on the King’s table next to the swans-a-swimming in gravy. And the gold rings were baked in the Christmas pudding! Medieval people dropped their plows, wrapped their spinning wheels in holly and ivy and took 12 days off, from Christmas day to Epiphany on January 6th. As the yule log crackled in the fire they feasted, played games and sports, attended mass, enjoyed subversive revelry and imbibed gallons of wassail. It all culminated into the most raucous party of the year on twelfth night! So Deck your halls, mull some wine, and cut a slice of mince pie as we join in the celebrations of the 12 days of Medieval Christmas... Advent, December 24th - Christmas Eve December 25th - Christmas Day - 1st day of Christmas  December 26th - The Feast of St Stephen - 2nd day of Christmas December 27th - The Feast of St John - 3rd day of Christmas  December 28th - Childermas - 4th day of Christmas  December 29th - Feast of St. Thomas Becket - 5th day of Christmas December 30th - 6th December 31st - New Year’s Eve - 7th day January 1st - New Year’s Day - 8th day January 2nd - 9th day January 3rd - 10th day January 4th - 11th day January 5th - Twelfth Night - 12th day January 6th - Epiphany My historically accurate 12 Days of Christmas Song: On the 12th day of medieval Christmas my true love gave to me: Twelve massive parties Eleven herbs and spices Ten archery arrows Nine saints bones Eight royal presents Seven swans-a-roasted Six carole singers Five bowls of wassail Four bishop boys Three mince pies Two alms for the poor and a boars head on a bed of holly! Queen Elizabeth II's Children

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom is mother to four children: Charles, Prince of Wales Anne, Princess Royal Prince Andrew, Duke of York Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex The famously stoic monarch is unsurprisingly not a warm and affectionate mother. As the children grew up so did the media. Tabloids and television demanded more insight into the lives of the royal family than ever before. The mystical reverence for monarchy was lost and the Queen’s children became real-life soap stars as the press hungrily followed their every triumph and tragedy. The privileged princes and princess were expected to be charming yet accessible and to exemplify a perfect family life. Standards that, through divorce and scandal proved impossible to live up to. Royal & Noble Serial Killers – Female

Today about 85% of all serial killers are male. On the rare occasions when a woman commits murder, it is far more shocking to society. But history reveals a handful of femme fatals who took the lives of others to gain power or even for their own sadistic pleasure. Royal and noble women were particularly well positioned to indulge their evil impulses. Wealth and power gave them nearly limitless freedom to prey on peasants, who in turn had little means of seeking justice. Today we’ll investigate the cases of 5 female aristocratic serial murderers from history: Anula, Queen of Anuradhapura, ? – 44 BCE Elizabeth Báthory, Hungarian Countess 1560 – 1614 Catalina de los Ríos y Lisperguer, “La Quintrala”, Spanish & Chilean Noblewoman 1604 – 1665 Marie-Madeleine d’Aubray, Marquise de Brinvilliers 1630 – 1676 Darya Nikolayevna Saltykova, 1755–1762 Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History! Royal & Noble Serial Killers – Male

Through most of history, royals and nobles held a place high above the peasant class. Their word was law and they could often get away with murder, literally. So much unchecked power sometimes went to a rulers head, morphing their darker urges into unspeakable acts of violence and cruelty. The lives of peasants were given very little value, and there were few means to investigate or seek justice against murderous aristocrats. High-born psychopaths were nearly unstoppable in their bloodlust and often racked up victim counts in the hundreds. Let’s investigate the cases of 4 royal and noble serial killers from history, and look at the theories that one of the most famous slashers of all time, Jack the Ripper was really a member of the British Royal family. Liu Pengli, Prince of Jidong, 144–116 BC Dhu Shanatir, Himyarite King, 5th century CE Gilles de Rais, Baron de Retz 1405 – 1440 Sado, Crown Prince of Joseon, 1757–1762 Prince Albert Victor if the United Kingdom 1864–1892  Join me every Tuesday when I'm Spilling the Tea on History!
