“Living the Resurrection” “k'g?yfgdf hLpg'” Keeping in mind the previous study of “God ‘I am’” in the next series, we’ll focus on the resurrection, in line with the season of Church’s life following Jesus’ life. Knowing God requires understanding the Resurrection. We will take the resurrection passages from the Bible to study. The study will focus on how we can live in/out the Resurrection in our lives today. Too often, we think of the Resurrection as the future reality, after we die. Therefore, it becomes no immediate concern for us today, other than prepare for after life, thus we lose interest or significance for the life here and now. Peter says, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. (1 Pet 3:15). Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15: 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. If we are people with resurrection hope, we must live differently than the ways of the world, as God in Jesus Christ have set an example for us. So we will explore what this “Living in/out the Resurrection” look like in our lives here and now. Recommended texts: John 21; Luke 24; 1 Corinthians 15; Romans 8; 1 Thessalonians 4, 5; 1 Peter 4, 2 Peter 3; Matthew 22: (23-33), Luke 20, Acts 24:10-21, Revelation 19, 20,21.

Sermon Series: “the God I am” “d xF'” k/d]Zj/ I am proposing this for the next sermon series. These are the felt needs- 1. From our evangelism trips and other travels, we have encountered so many different kinds of teachings and church leadership n Nepali churches. Many, including leaders have very eschewed (crocked) self-motivated idea about who God is, and how he works among us and what is the church called to do, therefore, have shaped their reading and teaching of the Bible. 2. Many Nepali believers are disillusioned about who God is (a healer, blesser, giver, magician, thus future-anticipations about life), who is basically there to give what I want, when I appease him with right things and manners, and many similar thoughts and ideas about God. We must understand God for who he is as he has revealed himself, before what we make him out to be for us/our needs. That biblical texts/revelations must shape, not only our understanding, but also our worship, our discipleship, our koinoniafellowships, and our practices both personal as well as corporate. The series will study the God YHWH, “I am” through the seven “I am” claims of Jesus in the gospel of John.

खरानी बुधबार, पा. अरबिन पोखरेल
We reflect briefly on the meaning of "Dust thou art, and to dust thou shalt return." We are only dust and that is reason for humility. But God used the dust to create us in his image. That is reason for joy and gratitude. And even though we shall return to dust, we shall be raised again. That is reason for hope. Then the priest prays: "Almighty God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth. Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our mortality and penitence, that we may remember that it is only by your gracious gift that we are given everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Savior." As we kneel at the altar rail, the priest "imposes" the ashes in the shape of a cross on our foreheads and says, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." The ash feels slightly oily. The people next to me cross themselves (again). We return to our pews and, while kneeling, we read Psalm 51 together: "I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me… Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure… The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." Never have I felt Psalm 51 as during this reading. The priest then leads us in confession: "We have not loved you with our whole heart" and a confession of more specific sins, while we pray, "Have mercy on us, Lord." The time of prayer ends with a comforting pronouncement that the Lord "pardons and absolves all those who truly repent and with sincere hearts believe his holy gospel." The transition to the Eucharist is signaled by the priest pronouncing, "The peace of the Lord be always with you." We say the same to all those around us. Then some shake hands, some hug; the couple in front of me kiss on the lips after they proclaim the peace of the Lord to each other. The bread of communion is a saltless, wholesome, dark brown bread—nourishing. The wine tastes tangy. I still like wine better at communion than the flat grape juice we now use at our church. The sharp bitterness of the wine and its association with celebration capture better the mixture of sadness and joy of the Supper. The closing prayer sends us on our way: "Look with compassion, O Lord, upon this your people; that rightly observing this holy season, they may learn to know you more fully, and to serve you with a more perfect will; through Christ our Lord."… Why Wednesday? Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. The early church determined that the Lenten period of fasting and renewal should correspond to Christ's fasting (Matt. 4:2), and by counting forty days back from Easter (excluding Sundays, which remain "feast" days), arrived at the Wednesday seven weeks before Easter. At one time Lent was primarily viewed as a period during which converts prepared for baptism on Easter Sunday, but later the season became a general time of penitence and renewal for all Christians. And Ash Wednesday became the day that marked the beginning of the Lenten renewal. Why "Ash"? Ashes have a long history in biblical and church traditions. In Scripture ashes (dust) symbolize frailty or death (Gen. 18:27), sadness or mourning (Esther 4:3), judgment (Lam. 3:16) and repentance (Jon. 3:6). Some traditions also have considered ash a purifying or cleansing agent. All these images are caught up in the church's use of ashes as a symbol appropriate for Lent. In Christ's passion we see God's judgment on evil; in our penitence we express sorrow and repentance for our sins; in our re-dedication we show that we are purified and renewed. The ash used in Ash Wednesday worship services is usually the ashes from the palm leaves of the previous year's Palm Sunday celebration. Mixed with water or oil, the ash is carried in a small dish; as the minister goes from person to person, he dips his thumb in the ash and makes a cross on each forehead ("imposition"). And to each person he says, "Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return." (Gen 3:17) The cleansing motif of ashes is reiterated in the psalm reading that follows: "Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin" (Ps. 51:2). And the ultimate outcome for the penitent child of God is reflected in the closing prayer: "… that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure and holy, so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy…" (Book of Common Prayer).

The word “Advent” is derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming,” which translates to the Greek word parousia."The celebration of Advent is possible only to those who are troubled in soul, who know themselves to be poor and imperfect, and who look forward to something greater to come." ~ Dietrich BonhoefferAdvent symbolizes the present situation of the church in these “last days” (Acts 2:17, Hebrews 1:2) as God’s people wait for the return of Christ in glory to consummate his eternal kingdom. The church is in a similar situation to Israel at the end of the Old Testament: in exile, waiting and hoping in prayerful expectation for the coming of the Messiah. Israel looked back to God’s past gracious actions on their behalf in leading them out of Egypt in the Exodus, and on this basis, they called for God once again to act for them. In the same way, the church, during Advent, looks back upon Christ’s coming in celebration while at the same time looking forward in eager anticipation to the coming of Christ’s kingdom when he returns for his people. O come, O come, Emmanuel,And ransom captive Israel,That mourns in lonely exile hereUntil the Son of God appears.Rejoice! Rejoice!Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.Advent is intended to be a season of fasting, much like Lent, and there are a variety of ways that this time of mourning works itself out in the season. Reflection on the violence and evil in the world causes us to cry out to God to make things right—to put death’s dark shadows to flight. Our exile in the present makes us look forward to our future Exodus. And our own sinfulness and need for grace lead us to pray for the Holy Spirit to renew his work in conforming us into the image of Christ.“When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior’s first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating the precursor’s birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: ‘He must increase, but I must decrease.’” (John the Baptist)It is between the fulfilled promise of Christ’s first coming and the yet-to-be-fulfilled promise of his second coming that Karl Barth penned these words:“Unfulfilled and fulfilled promises are related to each other, as are dawn and sunrise. Both promise and in fact the same promise. If anywhere at all, then it is precisely in the light of the coming of Christ that faith has become Advent faith, the expectation of future revelation. But faith knows for whom and for what it is waiting. It is fulfilled faith because it lays hold on the fulfilled promise.” The promise for Israel and the church is Jesus Christ; The Lord has come to earth and will arrive again. This is the essence of Advent.

Thanksgiving Series: “Sabbath Creates Grateful Community”zafyn] wGojfbL ;dfh lgdf{0f u5{ We will pause the series on James, to focus on the season’s theme of Thanksgiving. Sabbath is an underlying theme for us as a church, and going through it at least once in a year is necessary. Sabbath was intended to create grateful people and a community. The whole purpose of Creation and Law was to ensure people who come before God with gratitude (ritualistically, habitually, routinely) so as to ensure life centered around God, His presence and mission in the world. This series will focus on how Sabbath (worship and rest at least once a week) was intended to bring people back into their created focus- living before God for the sake of their neighbors. This focus is necessary, because the world- our lives, families, society, nation and world in its default culture tends to run away from God-centered lives to self-centered, consumer driven culture.Thanksgiving is a harvest season, where the fruit of our labors (fields or factories, friends and family) are signs of God’s provision. World and everything in it is so much more than what we could’ve created for ourselves or control with our knowledge and resources. This season is a reminder that God is in control and we are grateful recipients; and as grateful recipients we live with our hands open in response to enjoy, but also to share and give towards what makes our neighbors and others in our reach to flourish.

Why this series? Family is God’s design to display his glory. We praise God for he has given us such a beautiful web of relationship in order for us to grow in both dimensions, vertical and horizontal. We are in family. On the other side of the coin, family has also become a hub where demonic narratives are taught, applied and lived out. In other words, culture, values, practices in family are shaped by false stories. For example, money, sex, and romance have been narrated as everything – the goal of human relationship. Tim Keller puts these forces in the context of idolatry. In Nepal for many reasons, marriages are broken, divorce rate is increasing, single mother and father also going up every day and children, youth are left in their own. Overseas work, distant relationship, financial insecurity, family planning, extra marital affairs and other reasons are causing much problem in a family. Not surprisingly, Church has suffered the same consequences. Family care and counseling is seen as an urgent ministry of the church today. Though we are not fixer we are ought to love one another, serve each other, and to practice the presence of the Holy Spirit who applies and brings gospel renewal in our relationship as an antidote to make us grow in His Image – Jesus Christ. Thus, the way Jesus lived as a family member, the things he spoke and taught about family system is the only true and reliable Gospel story. So, in this preaching series, we shall learn some basic practices of Christian family with the view that practicing Holy Spirit is an essential element to make familial relationship fruitful and Christ centered. Spiritual health of our church has of course been boasted from previous sermons series, ‘practicing resurrection’ and sub heading ‘practicing ascension’. Congregation is taught adequately in the scripture, especially the life and atoning work of Jesus Christ. And this has provoked their desire, and love, to reorient their hearts in advancing the gospel. Also, everyone in the congregation is encouraged to practice their faith in a given context which in future will certainly maximizes the potential fruits of the Gospel – and the Spirit otherwise. In line with previous series, we are beginning a new sermon series on ‘Practicing Pentecost’ (what happens at the church when Holy Spirit comes?). And the objectives of this series are: a) to equip our people in the work of the Holy Spirit as God in the Trinity, b) to encourage our people to have desire for the fruits of the Spirit, and practice them and, c) to exhort our people to embody the mission of our Lord Jesus Christ in the power of the Spirit as we thrive becoming an excellent Nepali church. The need of this sermons series lies basically in the cultural, traditional, and arbitrary interpretation and application of the Pentecost, Holy Spirit, and the fruits of the Spirit which has caused malpractices, and confusion in churches then and today. Also, our people should clearly understand and desire the work of the Spirit at xWay and its empowerment in our everyday life. The primary work of the Spirit is to renew our hearts and mind (software, I would call it). The Spirit works to makes us (individual) in the image of His Son Jesus Christ (Col.3.9.10). It also, works to make His body that is church well-functioning to grow and be a blessing hub for its non-members. The Spirit also empowers church to reach out to community at large by evangelism, church planting and diaconal services. We can find examples throughout the book of Acts. Thus, Christ, His mission and the church should be our contexts in interpreting Pentecost, Holy Spirit and fruits of the Spirit. In this series, we shall thoroughly understand Pentecost – coming of the Spirit and practice the presence and the work of the Spirit in our midst.

Goal: We will move from Resurrection as believed and claimed theology to life’s practices.Resurrection is the central event of Christian life. It’s narratives both in history when Jesus was raised from the dead, but also in our own lives need defining and re-imagining for real life habits and cultural practices. If death is the ultimate enemy that has it’s grip over our lives, resurrection (of Jesus and therefore ours) sets us free, free enough for us to imagine God’s Kingdom here and now in our lives. Need: We are bound to our own “business as usual” and distracted by our lives’ demands on us, keeping too busy to “create, make [manufacture] and control” that we’ve kept ourselves preoccupied leaving hardly any room for the wonderment, deeper meaning and at the mysteries of resurrection. Resurrection is often presented as something to be argued, debated, proven and believed. While those are necessary about Resurrection, and have served the cause of Truth claims. But, through the narratives of the first Easter day, the events and persons, we learn resurrection is meant to be carried out into practices of our daily lives, more than cognitively believed, just as Jesus exemplified it’s meaning in his life. This sermon series will focus on the practices that Resurrection demands from us, as believers in Jesus, baptized into his death and resurrection.

Lent Sermon Series “Pray as You Are”This is a general series on Prayer. There’s no one book or fixed sub-topics under the topic of Prayer, (we suggest a bibliography). Preach what you (as teaching elders/leaders of the church, see good and suitable for the life of Prayer in the church. Goal of this series is to raise a praying-church- committed, persistent in-community praying. Jesus said, “My house shall be called the house of prayer for all people, but you have made it a den of robbers” If a church is not guided or let into prayer, it’ll become a “commercial center” of sorts. There’s no new clever program, just urging people to come and pray, pray in your spaces, best in groups and families. We have finished the series on “Church & the Gospel Responsibility” through the book Faithful Presence, where we focused on being present with people with intentionality to bring God’s presence through the Holy Spirit to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. These will be good resource to have on web-based where people can go back to listen and think and discuss. There’s a sense of “new paradigm” being set for understanding the gospel and the church as a practicing community- i.e. not a social set up for same old tradition for gaining self-propagated vision of power, status, and achieving personal dreams. In the same line of thought, invoking the presence of God and the Holy Spirit [old concept of “epiclesis”] we begin to give God the space and time priority (not own time and prayer concerns as priority). This means do not be afraid of silence to listen to God and his Word and thoughts he brings to us, ideas he gives, and direction he leads us. If God is alive and active among us, his acts (works) and thoughts (imaginations) are given space and priority. It will take time and practice to get used to such praying habits, but exercising is necessary.

Introduction Christmas has come and it’s over. New year is here. We are looking forward to it with new hope and, encouragement. We celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ. Jesus was not only born but he also lived, suffered, died and rose on the third day and he is coming again. This is the fulness of the gospel that we proclaim. We have made goals and plans in the previous years, but we know many of us have not been able to it follow through. Goals and plans will fail. It’s not wrong to make plans and set goals but we cannot always fulfill them and certainly we leave them half-way through when things get tough. Therefore, it isn’t enough to make plans and set goals, we also need to look to the one who is able to accomplish them for us. Let’s look at from 1 Peter 1:3-9, three things that might help us look forward to the New Year with renewed hope. Jesus has come, suffered, died and rose from the dead and he is coming again. Therefore, 1.We have a living hope (3-4)Hope is something that helps us look forward to the future. We all hope for something (return of investment, promotion, graduation etc). The difference between Christian and worldly hope is that the worldly hope is a hope without God. It does not have a power to change hopelessness into hope. But Christian hope has a power (the resurrection power) to change our hopelessness into a living hope because Jesus has been raised from the dead. Jesus is the source of our hope, and this living hope is found nowhere else other than Jesus. 2.Our future is secure (4)Why do people work so hard? What are they looking for? Why are they not happy with what they have? People are looking for secure future in places like: •Wealth and money – people think that if they invest certain amount of money that will earn this much in the future and the future will be secure. •Job – If I get this kind of job and paid this much money, my life will be secure. People look for security in their profession. •Relationship – people look for security in marriages. Why many marriages have problems? It’s because they think that marriage will provide security for them and when they don’t find it, they become unhappy, and problems starts to rise. Our ultimate hope is in Jesus because he has made it right what has gone wrong. 3.There is joy in the middle of suffering (5)It’s hard to go through suffering. We have experienced suffering of many sorts in our lives. It is painful. We panic when it comes. However, as Christians we can rejoice in our suffering. The reasons why we can rejoice in suffering is because: •We are called to suffer (1 Pet. 2:21)•Suffering has a goal (1 Pet. 1:7)In summary, if you are in Christ, you have a living hope, your future is secure and there is joy in suffering. If you are not a Christian, sadly you won’t have all of these. If you are not a Christ, I encourage you to know who Jesus is and what he can offer. If you are a Christian, you might not have these with you either. Pray that God will grant hope, security and joy in your life. Life without living hope, feeling secure of present and the future and joy cannot glorify God.

Theme: Message of Christmas should be drawn from the OT, because Christmas happened in the OT, in the prophetic tradition.Goal: We will gain deeper appreciation for the original Christmas message. We had a very meaningful NRC conference over the past week. The highlights of the week was in my view the sharing of our stories, celebrating what God is doing among us, with a keen eye and anticipation for what God wants to do through us in our churches and in Nepal. It was also a time of self examination, and preparations. I want to personally thank everyone who worked very hard to make all the events possible and enjoyable. This is the season of Advent. During Advent we focus on the coming of Christ. It is a season of waiting, preparing with Advent candles of hope, faith, peace, and love in anticipation of Christ’s coming. We at Cross-Way also prepare for evangelism and outreach as it has been a suitable season to invite neighbors, share the gospel, and even prepare for going outside to help other pastors and leaders to preach the gospel reaching out to their neighbors. The first sermon focused on the Christmas of the OT. The idea behind is that we often forget there is a whole world of people, culture, personality and context of time/space behind the story we read and often quickly put into our (or recently borrowed) ideas of culture, from our own perspectives. We are “imprisoned by the present,” whereas we must live inside God’s Big Story (grand plan of salvation and revelation). Thus the series will focus on digging deeper into the prophecies spoken around the Christmas events, the obscure prophecies (not often focused on Christmas messages), for there are many prophecies fulfilled around Jesus’ birth.

Introduction: This is a thanksgiving season at Cross-Way Church. Each year we focus on different aspect and angles of Christian life with regards to our call to grateful lives. Sacrifices are plenty in the OT. The question is, what do they mean? And what do they point to- because blood of animals or offer of grains are not in itself what God wanted. OT Sacrificial system bore heavy weights in life and society (personal, communal, economic). Notice how often they were required and how detailed the rituals were, which points to the significance for what they meant. Studying them, these were some of the reasons, as to WHY sacrifice offerings were required: A) Acknowledging and honoring God’s presence (Character of Holiness). B) Remembering Covenant Commitments. C) Symbolize Atonement (sacrifices for reconciling) appropriate to the sin/guilt. D) Value ascribed by voluntarily (freely) and willingly giving. They were never enough (elements, rituals) but were symbols = showing (alluding to) the essence and understanding of greater things God desired and meaning of life. Even though we are not required to bring sacrifice or material offerings today, the meanings behind those sacrifice rituals shows what was/is in God’s heart, which has not changed, because God has not changed. But, what does our lives show to/about God from what/how we give. Are our offerings worthy (show value & meaning) of God we worship? What are we giving? How are we giving? What does that mean? Are we giving less than our best? The Need: Too often our lives, in the midst of modern progressive lifestyle, namely of fast-pace globalized world connected with internet at our finger tips, literally with smart phones and access of information from across the world, have made us busy and pre-occupied and selfish. Consumer driven lifestyle, ironically, has left us empty. To experience what the world has in offer you must make money to have access. Go make money, by all means possible, get jobs, education, access (visa), preoccupies our lives. This is an age of instant gratification, our culture have lost (or forgotten) the secret and art of gratefulness. We must look to the root and sources from where our blessings come and learn to say Thank You.“The first responsibility of a leader is to define reality, and the last is to say ‘thank you’.” Max De Pree.Goal: We will learn the arts and motif of grateful response to God.We will understand (re-focus) what makes up the foundations of Christian life, (namely God has graciously not only created the world and everything in it, provided all things necessary to sustain our lives [vegetables that grow, parents who birthed and raised us, or not; oxygen we breath] Jesus Christ who has given us eternal life and hope to live now) accomplished our salvation. So, we will become grateful people with our hearts and actions.

The time we are facing now indicates that we live in a fallen world. Covid 19 Pandemic and its consequences have largely left us into brokenness, frustration, discouragement, confusion, uncertainty, losses, illness, death and we can keep on adding. No wonder, fear, anxiety, restless, and worry have began ruling our hearts. Thus, we are almost blind to see goodness, faithfulness, peace, grace, and kindness of our loving Father who has made available himself for us through His only Son Jesus Christ. Because of this, our desire to take part in public worship, our desire to serve people around, our desire to practice prayer, Bible study, fellowship, and our desire to preach and to live out the Gospel has become blur – in a sense we are losing our appetite. This is not so, because of the current situation alone but we have almost forgotten our hope which is rooted in the Person of Jesus Christ (death, resurrection and promises). Part of our problem is a resurrection amnesia – we have almost forgotten Christ’s resurrection therefore forgotten our hope(future). Hence, the goal of this series is to call church to its root, to the source of life and foundation – The Resurrection Hope, so that people of God shall be encouraged to serve the LORD and their neighbor joyfully.

Context- Healthy Discipleship series, COVID Pandemic elongated lockdowns/impacts, Christian Family Series in July-Aug.Goal: Each person will focus on strengthening first and primary bases- the foundations of our lives for following Jesus holistically. In the past 3-4 years, during July-August Cross-Way focuses on Christian Family. Family is the primary place of discipleship, more so than the church. Family is at the core of our spirituality, it is the hub of emotional and overall health. It is also the center of our lives where dreams are made and desires are formed. Thus, following Jesus (discipleship) must begin at home from the very foundations of our lives. We have been under the pandemic for the past 18 months. Life has been difficult, to some very difficult. It has made us stay lockdown to our bases, houses, rooms and basic things of life. Many have lost jobs, therefore earnings, and the savings have dried up. Future hopes are flickering like an oil-lamp running out of oil. Dreams have been crushed, hopes disappointed. God seems far away or none-existent. Many are suffering from mental instability. In times such as these, what will keep faith burning? How should we keep our spirituality practically alive and active? This series will focus on attending to our bases for spiritual and holistic health. We are calling this series “attending to our foundations”. Foundation is what holds the house together in times of crisis. They are deep, under the surface steady and constant, which determines how we will weather (stand) the seasons and crises in life. Things that determine build strong foundations are stones, cement, rebar or rods, sand and gravels, etc. Similarly, What would it take to build solid foundations of our lives, both personally and corporately. We will explore the foundational elements of our lives, namely, emotional, psychological, social, communal (social) and spiritual health. The series will also provide guidelines with recommended practices for building strong family foundations, strong enough to withhold earthquakes and disasters life in Nepal will inevitably bring.

There has been a traditional ways we have been doing ministry, which we have seen over 15 years of Cross-Way’s life and through us to our vision-churches. It’s time, after 15th anniversary to re-think, re-imagine, thus “re-Vision a church.” The purpose of this series is to focus on key areas (aspects) of being a church in context. Need for the series is prompted by- a. the new building, b. the COVID-impacted context for ministry, c. refining “ministry model” necessary, we’ve been considering over past few years, d. certain confusions created by church and ministries we’ve seen elsewhere, and our own pre-conceived notions about church and its purpose and functions, e. and perhaps, Pastor Arbin’s studies over past 7-years on church and pastoral formation focus. What kind of church do we want to be known for and become, as our children are watching keenly? What vision and aspirations do we fill their hearts and desires and imaginations for/about the church? Essentially what is church as it exists in the mind of Triune-God, Jesus the founder (life death and resurrection) and Holy Spirit our God-with-us-now? And church (ministries) as it exists in the hearts and minds of our pastors/leaders and members. Where do we want to invest our lives and resources in? Therefore, we hope to set a pace of life (Rhythm) at xWay for these values we believe church to be, and help each member get on board. (I think this will help people understand our message better).

Goal: Everyone belonging to church will understand (be able to discern) the culture being formed by “evangelical” avoiding misunderstanding and malpractices of evangelical churches in Nepal. Therefore, be excited and creative to engage gospel by living it. And, another motivation is to bring these understanding to our daughter churches. Evangelical means many things to many people. Every church defines it as they’ve learned or want to practice. There are many misunderstandings and malpractices inside evangelical churches or Nepal, we must be discerning and yet proactive in engaging both ideas (understanding) and living (actions and habits). Cross-Way is an evangelical church, but our understanding is peculiar way we interpret and understand the Bible. Evangelical means gospel of Jesus Christ centered. Church understands to preach the pure gospel of Jesus Christ (as he understood it and lived it), and to teach/preach its implications in our context of Nepal and our church.

The goal of the series is to prepare our hearts for the coming of Christ in our world (Christmas in this context of Pandemic, Lament, Thanksgiving, Advent).“Prepare the way of the Lord” is a series towards Christmas 2020. 2020 has been the year of COVID-19, a year of lockdown. It has changed our life, in many ways, not the least being home bound, everything going on line, testing our patience; poor and already-on-the margins being pushed more to the margins. Over 1.2 million people have already died, more records are being set for how many are being infected each day. There has been no other more urgent time (in world scale) to pray “come Lord Jesus.” Death, disease, suffering and grief has taken its toll. This is against God’s will for the world. Jesus said, “I’ve come to give you life, life to the full.” This Christmas, we “prepare the ways of the Lord” This means a) understanding the Lord, b) his ways, and then c) preparing. This series will follow the life track of John the Baptist who’s life mission was to “Prepare the Way of the Lord” and nothing else. A life expendable to the mission.

Christian Lament A series of messages for this season of life- six months into Corona Virus pandemic and its impacts in Nepal. The lockdown has caused much stress in the normal life, not only in Nepal for us, but for everyone across the world. As of today (Sept 25) 31,375,000 cases, 966,400 deaths (almost one million) 235 countries. 10,00,000 people’s death is not a simple thing (around 400 lives in Nepal)- even though most of us have not caught or suffered in our bodies, the life in this community, this country, and our world has impacted us. Furthermore, Nepal has suffered from landslides and floods (taking over 350 lives this year), locusts among other disasters and collateral or prolonged impacts (jobs, economy, mental health, etc.), What should be our (church’s and individual’s) response? The leaders in the church and trusted godly people across the world have called for a time of lament. Everyone grieves in life, suffering and pain are part of everyone’s life, but as Christians we are called to peculiar form of grief, a sorrow deep and honest, that reaches out to our neighbors from depths of our hearts out of genuine concern, and godly love, what we are calling “Christian Lament”.This series addresses the need that Nepali churches are not equipped (in proper biblical knowledge and traditional culture) for lamentation, nor do they have a practice, a proper tradition to live out Christian lament. We will learn in this series. Definition: Christian Lament is honest human expression over the losses in life, with full range of human emotions, which is expressed towards loving God, who hears honest cries and prayers addressed to him by his people. It is not hasty in explanations or shallow solutions, but patiently dwell amidst the circumstances, with God and trusted friends within faithful community in becoming mature in fullness of Christ’s character.

Temples, Centers for… (God’s Interventions with His People)dlGb/, k/d]Zj/sf] pk:yLltsf] s]Gb|March, 2020.Introduction to the Series: Temple is a big theme in the Bible. Creation is a temple, God’s abode where he chooses to dwell and act. Eden is a temple, a center where God meets (reveals and fellowship) with Adam and Eve (human beings). Here he makes covenant (terms of relationship) and seals with rituals that suits his Holy nature and character (which human beings don’t fully understand, but are called to follow and obey). Sinai (see first sermon on Exo 24) is a temple, Israel turns to God, God speaks and instructs the people he chose for his presence (Exo 19:5,6). In this way, the temple theme continues through out OT. In the NT, Jesus comes as the new temple. Paul and Apostles speak of the temple with regards to (continuity and discontinuity of OT themes). We look forward to the Eschatalogical Temple, when God will dwell with his people. These themes have deeper significance with our lives, with regards to our religious and spiritual lives, as we live in secular age. People claim, “I want spirituality but I don’t want to be religious.” In Eugene Peterson’s words, “we have insatiable hunger for God, but do not want church.” The purpose of the series is to bring deeper hunger to surface and acknowledge and own our desire for God and know-how to turn and live before him. A study through scripture will make us aware of God’s purpose in giving Temples (and rituals around it) to people to make his presence immanent, yet in reverence and adorations. A secondary purpose is to know why this great big expensive church building in Kathmandu, we’ve just built. How to understand it and make best use of it. The Goal of the series is to help people understand and desire God’s presence and learn to practice the presence of God. Come to Cross-Way to learn, seek and serve God as he wants to be known and obey his word and live his mission.

Gospel by means of HospitalityPreaching SeriesThe series “Gospel by means of Hospitality” is about the shift in our approach to sharing the gospel. This came out of our outreach of January, where we have continued training our churches in “Living the Gospel Out-Loud,” which is also called “missional living.” All the thoughts and ideas written about it, we’re trying to contextualize the gospel-living in Nepal. As pastors/teachers we want to educate, train and eventually help the church in the way of life (building culture) of living the gospel. Gospel is communicated (understood) reaches the hearts of people by way (means) of hospitality. There are lots of stories among us, as to how we came to hear/know/believe the gospel. Hospitality was Jesus’ means to living the gospel. In Luke 4, Jesus declares at outset of his public ministry, his mission as “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to preach the good news to the poor… set the captives free, make the blind see, … to declare the year of the Lord’s favor.” When the Spirit of the Lord comes, (church finds breath and life) and becomes alive, it lives out the mission of Jesus, which is more than preaching. Here’s an excerpt from the “Living the Gospel out-loud” curriculum (please consult the handbook, which is saturated with the ideas of Gospel by means of Hospitality). In fact, you can choose one topic from the curriculum to preach on. “Living the Gospel Out-Loud” k|ToIf hLPsf] ;';dfrf/ k[i6e"ldM xfd|f] ;';dfrf/ k|yf / ljrf/ o:tf] x'g k'u]sf] 5 M “of] t kf:6/ / k|rf/sx?sf] sfd lhDdf xf] .” / “of] t sf7df8f}af6 cfPsf l6dx?n] ug{] sfo{j|md xf]” eGg] afgL a;]sf] x'bf, d08nLsf ljZjf;Lx?n] of] hLDdf glnPsf] ;fy} ug{ ghfg]sf] cj:yf lgdf{0f x'g k'u]sf] 5 . g]kfnL k|rng cg';f/, “oL t eGg] s'/fx? dfq x'g\” /fhlgtLs efif0f jf “elglbpFg, s'/f 6fg'{ t xf]” h:tf Joxf]/fx? ;';dfrf/ klg aGg k'u]sf] 5 . k|rfl/Psf] ;';dfrf/ h'g rflx+ hLjgaf6 k|s6 ePsf] x'Fb}g, Tof] jf:tjLs jf k|efjsf/L x'g;Sb}g . Description & Design: This is the season of hope in the midst of darkness. As the people of God in the Old Testament waited expectantly for the promised King – The Messiah, the promised fulfilled in the first advent of our Lord Jesus Christ. Today, we the people of God today wait expectantly for the second advent as promised in the Scriptures. The season of advent prepares us not only for the celebration of the first advent (Christmas) but also motivates us to be hopeful and live in a joyful expectation of the return of our Lord Jesus Christ (The Second Coming of Christ)—a personal, physical visible, sudden, glorious and triumphant return. The need: “We are too spiritually blind to find our own way- our wealth has made us greedy, self-indulging and self-seeking”. “Christmas is a wonderful, secular holiday,” wrote one enthusiast at the popular Web site Gawker.”—says Timothy Keller in his book “Hidden Christmas.” “born to give them second birth’?”- does this statement makes any sense to this generation? The world around us in dark and hostile to the light of the Gospel in many ways. Jesus is the light and we as the disciples of Jesus are the bearers of that light (gospel), the light that shines in the darkness- a light that gives hope to the perishing – a light that gives us ourselves everlasting hope. We live as people of “hope” and “joy” and we share this “hope” and “joy” to this passing generation. Purpose of the series is to remind ourselves of the fulfilled promises of our Lord in the first advent and motivate us to live a life as the people of “hope” and “joy” keeping his promise of second advent. We shall dig into the real meaning of the first advent and prepare our hearts for the second. Rejoicing in the finished work of Jesus Christ in his birth, life, death and resurrection we commit to live waiting/anticipating, and preparing ourselves joyfully for his second advent. Goal: Everyone will know the meaning and importance of the promises of God in Jesus Christ, and be grounded in hope- and start a joyful preparation anticipating the second advent of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The question is no whether we are rooted or not, but where and in-what are we rooted in? We need a rooted life. It’s about commitments we hold deeper than our actions and products. It’s a series in discipleship as model of ministry of xWay (and NRC) churches. The need (Fallen Condition) is the culture and society sold on consumerism. We have become individuals in pursuit of our personal happiness and goals. Life’s driven by desires unless we put rein (bridle) on it, it’ll run its course and consume us.“Mission trumps everything” “But a clear through-out conviction that comes from within one’s values is consistent with one’s beliefs is like a healthy spine and strong core muscles. They enable us to stand without wavering, to keep our balance, to stay grounded without having to be overly defensive or attacking” We are like a well-rooted sequoia that can withstand fires and storms. Others may get blown away or consumed, but convictions help us stand.” (Bolsinger, Canoeing the Mountain. 133). “Rooted”Purpose of the series is to learn where and how life grows and fruit it produces. Ask your self, where am I rooted, and what’s causing the fruit I’m bearing, because tree doesn’t lie, our lives don’t like when we see fruit. We can live today showing what we want people see about us, cover-up makeup dress up, show up, …Goal: Everyone thinks seriously about their own roots, where it is and how deep are they. Begin grounding it in Christ, the way of Christ, and commit to Christ-centered community where God plants them.
