The unlucky 2% with Jo Roca

In this episode of Untidy, we talk to Jo Roca, a creative director and working mum of two, for a  raw and candid conversation about navigating the brutality of Hyperemesis Gravidarum during both her pregnancies. Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG) affects 2% of pregnant women and is a severe type of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy that can require hospitalisation and treatment with IV fluids and anti-nausea medication. Jo gives us an honest insight into what it’s really like living with Hyperemesis Gravidarum in pregnancy. There is very little scientific understanding and social awareness about this condition and Jo takes us through what this harrowing journey is really like from the inside.  As well as talking about the physical, psychological, and emotional impacts of HG, Jo also talks about the impact on her relationships with her husband and first child. She discusses openly what helped, what didn't, how to get through it, and how to support someone you know who is suffering from HG.Follow Jo on Instagram @juanaroca. Mixing rugby and motherhood with Les Elder

In this episode of Untidy we talk to former Black Ferns captain and māmā of two, Les Elder. Les was part of the World Cup winning squad in 2017 and later became captain while trying to start a family at the same time. With both her babies conceived by IVF, the process of conception was complicated whilst meeting the rigorous training schedule as a professional rugby player. Les continued training throughout her first pregnancy and returned to her career soon after giving birth. She experienced dangerous complications during her second pregnancy that resulted in emergency surgery.    Les talks to us about how she handled rising into leadership as women’s rugby in Aotearoa New Zealand became professional. She explains how she juggled starting a family, maintaining a healthy relationship, recovering from pregnancy complications and birth with the pressures of performing at the highest level of rugby and continuing her career in sport.    As a working mother that saw Les spend a lot of time away from her young children, she talks about how this felt and how she and her husband, Johnny, reconcile themselves with the choices they have made as a whanau. Meeting the inner critic with Mike King

In this episode of Untidy we talk to the iconic Kiwi entertainer, now, mental health advocate Mike King. Mike gives us a warts-and-all account of his evolution from an edgy and turbulent life as a breakthrough comedian, to his life-threatening reckoning that changed his path forever. Mike is now the founder of I Am Hope Foundation and initiative, Gumboot Friday, which fundraises to provide free and timely counselling for young people across Aotearoa. Mike is not afraid to rattle some cages as he works towards societal change that will positively impact the devastating suicide statistics amongst our rangitahi in New Zealand.  We discuss the inner critic that lives inside of all of us and how this is where anxiety and depression stem. Through being honest about our own experiences, thoughts and feelings, we can parent our tamariki in a way that they understand they are not alone, they are worthwhile, and they are valued to give them a brighter future.  Help Hannah and her team, Tuk Tuk Boom, raise vital funds for Gumboot Friday through their Givealittle page https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/tuk-tuk-boom as they race a tuk tuk around Sri Lanka! Q&A with meditation teacher, Georgia Vavasour

In this episode of Untidy, we have a question and answer session with Vedic Meditation teacher, Georgia Vavasour. Georgia answers listeners’ questions such as ‘where do I start with meditation?’ She also delves into the differences between learning from an app and a trained teacher, what to do about feeling constantly overwhelmed, battling brain fog, as well as addressing the common ‘I don’t have time’ mindset around fitting meditation into an already busy life. Georgia goes into the problem of ‘chronic perfectionism’ when it comes to parenting, and how to give yourself grace, while the girls talk about their personal experience with meditation as well and the importance of using all the resources at your disposal to cultivate a healthy body and mind. Prepping for a Positive Birth with Helen Bartrom

In this episode of Untidy we talk to Helen Bartrom from Positive Births. Helen is a Clinical Hypnotherapist, mum of three, and host of The Positive Birth NZ podcast. She is also the author of ‘Positive Birth in New Zealand: using Relaxation, Hypnobirthing and Mindfulness’. Helen helps women and birthing people feel empowered for their upcoming birth, using hypnobirthing techniques. Matty recently had a session with Helen, so the girls dive into what hypnobirthing actually is, and the common misconceptions around it — i.e., whether it is just a ‘woo-woo’ fad. They discuss the importance of focusing on what you can control in the labour process, and how to let go of the need to control the things you can’t. We delve into the importance of the breath, and how it is used to work with your body to assist the birth process, as well as practical ways your partner can act as a support beam during labour.  The girls also discuss the primal sounds that can occur in birth, why we should embrace the time in a woman’s life where it is socially acceptable to moo like a cow, and why positive birth stories need to be shared far and wide to flip the narrative that childbirth needs to be feared.  Follow Helen on Instagram at @positive_births_nz, and check out her website https://www.positivebirths.co.nz/. Helen does in person sessions in Auckland and Whangārei, as well as online. Helen also does a free Webinar every few months. Find out more via her website. Thanks for listening! The myth of ‘Baby Brain’ with Dr Sarah McKay

In this episode of Untidy we talk to Dr Sarah McKay. Originally from Christchurch NZ, Sarah is an Oxford University-educated neuroscientist, author, speaker and director of Think Brain's suite of online training programs. Sarah now resides in Sydney with her husband and two boys. We cover a lot of ground in this episode. We delve into the findings from Sarah’s recent book ‘Baby Brain’ - a term often used to describe the perceived cognitive decline a lot of new mums experience. We wanted to know exactly what was going on upstairs after we had our babies… Why were we putting fridge items in the pantry? And why did Hannah forget how to spell her own name after having her son? Sarah unpacks the science behind what actually happens neurologically during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and the research may surprise you! Have we been scammed?!   We talk about the need to re-frame the connotations around ‘baby brain’, and why the term ‘supermum’ needs to be banished from our collective vocabulary.  Follow Sarah on Instagram at @drsarahmckay, and check out her website https://drsarahmckay.com/. Spring flinging, ‘hysterical’ women, and that hardware store swagge

In this episode of Untidy, Hannah’s doing a deep spring clean and nothing is safe from dust bunnies to dating apps. We talk sledgehammer therapy, gym grunting and why emotional outbursts in women make them ‘hysterical’ while men have simply been, ‘pushed too far’. We wonder if we’re making our eldest kids tolerate too much, and if Matty has any right to adopt that ‘hardware store swagger’ if she abandons her botched drawers on the roadside.  Thanks for listening! A fresh rant, needy mates, and Celebrity Treasure Island

In this episode of Untidy, we kick things off with a fresh rant as Hannah nominates a worthy candidate for the dating hall of shame. We answer a listener's question about how to handle a needy mate, and, Matty gives us a behind-the-scenes peek at the drama that unfolded in the first three episodes of Celebrity Treasure Island.  We find out about how she won the wall challenge, if she really had beef with Grant, and what her strategy was for ‘playing the game’. Matilda Green ... friend of foe??!!We share our mental health maintenance strategies for Mental Health Awareness Week and what we both rely on to keep things on an even keel.   Untidy is made for you – the people right at the heart of this steaming hot mess we call parenthood. Not Like Other Dads with Sean Szeps

In this episode of Untidy we talk to Sean Szeps, host of the popular podcast, ‘Come Out Wherever You Are’, and author of ‘Not Like Other Dads’. As well as a writer, podcaster and content creator, Sean is most well-known for his accidental advocacy, which arose from sharing his journey as a gay dad raising boy-girl twins alongside his husband, Josh.  We speak to Sean about what it was like growing up in a conservative Roman Catholic home whilst grappling with his sexuality. We talk about his coming out story and how he and his family dealt with the response of their community and their church. We also discuss gender roles in the family home, and how Sean and his partner Josh had the opportunity to reframe parental roles with a ‘blank slate’ rather than start with assumed duties based on gender.  Sean also shares hilariously relatable parenting videos on his Instagram, which are great for a giggle. Check out Sean’s Instagram @seanszeps, and you can order his new book ‘Not Like Other Dads’ here; a wonderful book empowering straight and queer parents alike to rewrite the parenting script.
