How Much Protein Can You Absorb? (12 Studies Analyzed)

There are many common “broscience” myths in the fitness industry that have zero scientific merit. One of the most well-known bodybuilding myths is the idea that your body can only absorb a limited amount of protein from a single meal. Well, the truth is that your body can absorb nearly an unlimited amount of protein into the bloodstream. The more accurate question (that actually does have scientific merit) is, “how much absorbed protein can your body use from a single meal to build muscle?” Or in more technical terms, “what amount of protein maximally stimulates the postabsorptive rates of myofibrillar muscle protein synthesis?” That's the question we'll answer in this episode.Support the show

Do Your Beliefs Empower or Imprison You?

We made a post on Instagram a few days ago with what turned out to be a pretty polarizing idea. The post said, “It’s not fat. It’s not carbs. It’s not sugar. It’s not alcohol. If you’re not losing weight, it’s because you’re eating too many calories. Period.”The post got nearly 8,000 likes and lots of positive feedback, but we also got slammed by a bunch of people. We got comments like, “this is false information,” “my thyroid says this is fake news,” and “this is very toxic and harmful information.”First of all, science is not fake news. But let’s forget science for a second and talk about the beliefs that these people hold. Do these beliefs empower or imprison them? Is telling yourself that energy balance is “fake news” actually constructive towards your goals? Or is that belief actually holding you back from building the body and confidence that you deserve?More broadly, do your beliefs about health and fitness empower or imprison you? Do you tell yourself that you’ll never be comfortable in your own skin? Do you tell yourself that you won’t ever be able to run a half marathon, deadlift your body weight, or complete some other athletic achievement that you would love to be able to do? Do you tell yourself that you aren’t fit enough to go to the gym? Do you tell yourself that you don’t have time to make healthy meals and move your body?As Henry Ford famously said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”Support the show

The Protein-Combining Myth DEBUNKED!

In this episode, we bust the myth of protein combining. A "complete" protein contains all 9 of the essential amino acids. Light Weights vs. Heavy Weights For Building Muscle

Despite what the bodybuilding magazines tell you, the primary driver of muscle growth is progressive overload. It’s not muscle confusion or time under tension or muscle soreness or metabolic conditioning or anything else.Progressive overload means increasing tension levels in muscle fiber over time and the best way to do that is to add weight to the bar. If you are not gradually adding weight to the bar over time (assuming you are working in the same rep range) then you are definitely not building muscle at an optimal rate.Get your free copy of our new book, Vegan Fat Shredding Secrets: https://www.veganshredding.comApply to the Vegan Superhero Academy, our 1-on-1 online coaching program: https://www.vegansuperheroacademy.comFollow us on Instagram for daily tips and inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/thevegangym/Check out our vegan fitness apparel: https://vegangymgear.com/Support the show

Balancing Protein and Carbs as a Vegan

How do you balance protein and carbs as a vegan? That's a question that we receive often. And it's a fair question! Most protein-packed plant foods also tend to be high in either carbs or fat. For example, tofu is packed with high-quality plant protein, but it's also high in fat. Lentils are packed with high-quality plant protein, but they also contain lots of carbs. This can make it difficult to balance your macros, especially when you are working to shred fat.So in this week's episode of The Vegan Gym Podcast, my brother and I will teach you how to get all the protein you need while balancing your carb and fat intake!Get your free copy of our new book, Vegan Fat Shredding Secrets: https://www.veganshredding.comApply to the Vegan Superhero Academy, our 1-on-1 online coaching program: https://www.vegansuperheroacademy.comFollow us on Instagram for daily tips and inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/thevegangym/Check out our vegan fitness apparel: https://vegangymgear.com/Support the show

Does Cardio KILL Gains?!

Does cardio KILL gains?? This is a question that we get ALL the time. We've been doing quite a bit of cardio this past month as we start training for our upcoming Ironman 70.3 triathlon, so we thought it would be a good time to discuss this topic. The short answer is no, cardio does not kill gains, but there are many considerations such as training intensity, training frequency, training modality, and training timing. We need to fully understand these specifics to ensure there is no interference between concurrent resistance and cardiovascular training. To learn everything you need to know about doing cardio on top of a weight training program, listen to this week's episode of The Vegan Gym Podcast.Get your free copy of our new book, Vegan Fat Shredding Secrets: https://www.veganshredding.comApply to the Vegan Superhero Academy, our 1-on-1 online coaching program: https://www.vegansuperheroacademy.comFollow us on Instagram for daily tips and inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/thevegangym/Check out our vegan fitness apparel: https://vegangymgear.com/Support the show

“I CAN’T” Is Just A Cop Out

The people who achieve success in fitness are the people who get up and make it happen. They look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, then they make them. They don’t make excuses. The word “can’t” doesn’t exist in their vocabulary.Stop saying “I can’t.” You CAN. You just chose not to.That’s a REALLY important distinction. And honestly, it's often a hard pill to swallow.I’m not saying that it’s easy. It’s usually the exact opposite. It’s typically really, really tough. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. The TRUTH About Vegan Protein Quality

A high-protein diet is absolutely vital for building muscle, gaining strength, and getting ripped. But when it comes to protein, QUANTITY is only half of the equation. The other half is protein QUALITY. Most people talk about protein in terms of quantity, but I would argue that vegan protein quality is equally important. And here's why...The protein found in plant foods all have different "qualities." “High quality” versus “low quality” proteins are terms generally used to distinguish the relative proportions of the different essential amino acids found in certain foods. The more closely the proportion matches our own proteins, the higher its “quality.”In this episode of The Vegan Gym Podcast, we'll discuss the TRUTH about vegan protein quality.Get your free copy of our new book, Vegan Fat Shredding Secrets: https://www.veganshredding.comApply to the Vegan Superhero Academy, our 1-on-1 online coaching program: https://www.vegansuperheroacademy.comFollow us on Instagram for daily tips and inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/thevegangym/Check out our vegan fitness apparel: https://vegangymgear.com/Support the show

How Much Vegan Protein Should You Eat To Build Muscle?

One of the most common questions vegans ask us is: "How much vegan protein should you eat to build muscle?" Well, a high-protein diet is absolutely vital for building muscle and strength. While it might be possible to build some muscle with a relatively low protein intake around 10% of total calories, a plethora of sports nutrition research proves you are fighting an uphill battle. If you are working to build muscle, you should aim for at least 0.8 grams of high-quality plant protein per pound of body weight per day (assuming you have a relatively low body fat percentage). That’s equal to 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day.You might think this sounds high, but trust us. When you are working your ass off in the gym to gain muscle, you want to be sure you are getting all of the protein you need to be sure you aren’t leaving any gains on the table.Let’s Take A Look At What The Research SaysA study by the Exercise Nutrition Research Laboratory at the University of Western Ontario confirmed that regular exercise increases daily protein requirements by as much as 100% vs. recommendations for sedentary individuals.Given that the recommended daily allowance for protein is 0.36 grams per pound of body weight (0.8 grams per kilogram of bodyweight) for healthy adults, the researchers suggest 0.73 to 0.82 grams per pound of bodyweight per day (1.6 to 1.8 grams per kilogram of body weight).A study by the Exercise Metabolism Research Group at McMaster University found that protein intakes in the range of 0.6 to 0.82 grams per pound of bodyweight per day (1.3 to 1.8 grams per kilogram of body weight per day) consumed in 3-4 equal amounts each day will maximize muscle protein synthesis. The researchers suggested that experienced athletes likely require less protein.A study from the McMaster University Medical Center concluded that athletes working to maximize bulk and strength while resistance training should consume foods with high biological value with a maximum protein requirement of approximately 1.7 grams per kilogram of body weight per day (0.77 grams per pound of bodyweight per day).So as things stand right now in the scientific literature, if you are serious about gaining muscle and strength, and you want to be safe in terms of consuming enough protein to promote that muscle growth, then you should aim for about 0.8 grams of protein per pound of body weight (1.8 grams per kilogram of body weight).Get your free copy of our new book, Vegan Fat Shredding Secrets: https://www.veganshredding.comApply to the Vegan Superhero Academy, our 1-on-1 online coaching program: https://www.vegansuperheroacademy.comFollow us on Instagram for daily tips and inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/thevegangym/Check out our vegan fitness apparel: https://vegangymgear.com/Support the show

Should You Focus on Building Muscle or Shredding Fat?

Most people want to both shred fat and gain more muscle. Unfortunately, only newbie weightlifters or people with a lot of fat to lose can do both at the same time. Even if you belong in one of these two categories, you cannot simultaneously build muscle and shred fat efficiently.Doing both at the same time violates the basic principles of body composition:You must maintain a caloric deficit to shred fat (calories in < calories out)You must maintain a caloric surplus to build muscle (calories in > calories out)So what's the solution? You need to pick one. Since you probably can’t build muscle and lose fat at the same time, and even if you can you aren’t doing either one efficiently, you need to juggle your cuts and bulks. In other words, you focus on shredding fat for a few weeks or months and then focus on building muscle for a few months and then shred again. This way, you can stay fairly lean year round! In this podcast, we’re going to tell you exactly how we bulk and shred to continue building muscle and strength!Apply to the Vegan Superhero Academy, our 1-on-1 online coaching program: https://thevegangym.com/coachingFollow us on Instagram for daily tips and inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/thevegangym/Check out our vegan fitness apparel: https://vegangymgear.com/Support the show

The 3 Laws of Building Vegan Muscle

People ask me all the time, “how can I build vegan muscle?” Well, I’ve been training for over a decade now and I’ve tried just about every training routine, diet regimen, and supplement that you can imagine. Like most guys, I had no clue what I was doing when I started out. I turned to magazines and the advice of professional bodybuilders for help, which had me spending a couple of hours in the gym every day and wasting hundreds of dollars on worthless supplements each month…only to make mediocre progress. This went on for years, and I jumped from workout program to workout program. In fact, just 3 years ago I finally learned the 3 Laws of Building Vegan Muscle and in this episode Anders and I will share all of them with you. If you stick with these 3 Laws, you could chop YEARS of wasted time and effort off your vegan fitness journey.Get your free copy of our new book, Vegan Fat Shredding Secrets: https://www.veganshredding.comApply to the Vegan Superhero Academy, our 1-on-1 online coaching program: https://www.vegansuperheroacademy.comFollow us on Instagram for daily tips and inspiration: https://www.instagram.com/thevegangym/Check out our vegan fitness apparel: https://vegangymgear.com/Support the show
