He was a Christian minister and gospel music artist.I'm not podcasting to judge him about his religious beliefs. I'm not here to judge anyone. If Carlton beliefs were wrong about heaven and hell, maybe God showed him the truth before breath left his body. We don't know everything, and some things is just between the individual soul and God until the Lord comes. When the Lord comes, we’ll know everything then. And what we don't understand now like Carlton Pearson used to sing: and we'll understand it better by and by.I've enjoyed hearing him sing that song and telling the story about his mother. Claude Joseph Johnson is his name. He was born on May 16, 1913, in Douglasville, Georgia, the son of Will and Cora Reid Johnson. The family moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1916. His mother died when he was young, and he with his elder and younger sister were raised by his paternal grandmother, Sarah Farley Johnson. His father, Will, was a shape note teacher in Georgia in the 1920s and 1930s.He first acted as pastor at the age of 12 at the Antioch Baptist Church in Barnesville, Georgia. He was pastor in 14 churches, including his own foundation of the St Joseph's Missionary Baptist Church. Although Johnson had been active in Georgia since his early years, he only gained wider prominence from 1964, when he came to the attention of Fred Mendelsohn, then executive producer at Savoy Records. He recorded at least 20 albums, all of which were recorded in his church rather than in a recording studio.Although most of his recorded songs are traditional, 26 are listed as his own compositions. His 1970 recording of "I Wanna Go Where Jesus Is" was a gold-selling record.I love the way Johnson sings Hush! Hush! Somebody's Calling My Name. From the 1966 album Dr. C.J. Today's topic is Semaje “I Rely”. Semaje has a ballot titled I Rely. It seems to be a popular gospel song. I love the song I rely by Semaje because that's what God has been telling me to do. Rely on him .Semaje’s song is a true gospel song because we must rely on God. I don't know much about Semaje, but I know he must have realized something about relying on God to make this song I Rely. The song must have touched others for the fact that the song has received attention. I don't think relying on God is something easy for the world. We are used to doing things on our own and that's the world’s way. When you try to rely on God, it may not make sense to the world. But the Bible say be not conformed to this world. That’s Romans 12:2. Semaje _I Rely caught my attention the minute I heard the music. It’s a very inspiring gospel ballad that could last into the future. Those are truthful & beautiful words describing the body which is the temple of God. Candi Staton is a great singer and songwriter. Her sister Maggie Staton and Felicia Calloway would do background vocals for her. God gave Candi so much talent, but he also gave her a new direction. Candi Staton is also a breast cancer survivor always thanking God. She must have done something right in her life. The Lord loves Candi, and he loves us all. Nobody lives you like the Lord. James Cleveland.Rev. James Cleveland believed that gospel music should be low keyed. He didn’t believe in rock gospel. James Cleveland believed gospel music expressed love for Christ and that it was more about the message. In rock gospel, to him, the music is more important than the message. Some gospel singers think more about survival like The Mighty Clouds of Joy. They believed that gospel music should be up-beat. I remember James Cleveland being played a lot on the radio in the 80’s & the Mighty Clouds of Joy too. I began to gradually notice a change in gospel music altogether. There was more than choir, piano, and organ. There were more instruments added. The gospel singers had more of a studio sound than of a live sound. They began to sound more modern than old fashioned.James Cleveland was not only a gospel singer, but a musician, arranger, composer, and choir leader. Cleveland incorporated traditional black gospel, soul, pop, and jazz in arrangements for mass choirs. On top of that, it seemed he was successful with his belief in doing gospel music the old fashioned way. When some gospel singers couldn’t make it his way.Like the Mighty Clouds of Joy. They did things different. They needed hit records, & they were a quartet kind of group. They had a hit record titled “Mighty High”. If you listen to the song, you can definitely hear the difference between them & James Cleveland. James Cleveland had no intention of crossing over into rock gospel. James Cleveland had sung songs like “Lord Do It, You’re The Best Thing That Ever Happened, Can’t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus, Where Is Your Faith In God, & Peace Be Still. When I think of him, I think of when I first heard him sing, “I Don’t Feel No Ways Tired”. Throughout his career, Cleveland appeared on hundreds of recordings and earned 4 Grammy Awards. He was first gospel musician to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was inducted into the Gospel Musical Hall of Fame in 1984. Cleveland is regarded by many to be one of the greatest gospel singers that ever lived. He was known as the King of Gospel music.

I asked myself, “How about the Five Blind Boys of Alabama?” Sure enough it was them. For some reason, I love the way they sing Jesus Walk With Me. The style sounds like country gospel. I love the instruments and how the band put the music together for the song. It sounds like a prayer, and I do need Jesus to walk with me. How about you? The Five Blind Boys of Alabama has done a great job singing Jesus Walk With Me. The group was founded in 1939 in Talladega Alabama. The group enjoyed even further exposure and success in 2000s. The Blind Boys of Alabama performed “Free At Last” at the White House on Feb. 9, 2010. In 2010, the Blind Boys were inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. She left us at the age of 67. The McCrary Sisters are a gospel quartet from Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 2010 by sisters Ann McCrary, Deborah McCrary, Regina McCrary, and Alfreda McCrary. They have released four studio albums and one live album: Our Journey (2010), All the Way (2013), Let's Go (2015), Live (2017) and A Very McCrary Christmas (2019).The McCrary Sisters are the daughters of a former Baptist preacher, Reverend Samuel H. "Sam" McCrary (1913-1991), who was a founding member of The Fairfield Four.The four sisters (now 3 sister) are great in harmonizing. I love the kind of gospel songs that they sing. When you dig up a song like this one, you might not understand what they mean by Gospel-Funk. Maybe they call it that because of the sound of music. I hear the gospel, but I don’t hear funk. I hear a strong gospel message in Cliff’s song, and that’s what is important. I also hear deep soul when I play the song. You can hear Cliff’s song on Spotify. Cliff’s song is found on the record label Calvary Records.A poor wayfaring stranger is a stranger traveling.The song reminds me of the scriptures and what the Bible said in Hebrews11:13 about those that died in faith and how they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. Christian songwriters refer to the idea that this life, and this earth is not our real home. That we are strangers on the earth just traveling through. The real home is heaven with the Lord. Today’s topic: The Golden Gate Quartet.The Golden Gate Quartet (a.k.a. The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet) is a vocal gospel group. It was formed in 1934 and, with changes in membership, remains active.The group was founded as the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers in 1934, by four students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. According to the group's website, the original members were Willie Johnson (baritone 1980), William Langford (tenor; d. 1970), Henry Owens (second tenor 1970) and Orlandus Wilson (bass; 1917–1998); other sources state that Langford and Wilson replaced earlier members Robert "Peg" Ford and A.C. "Eddie" Griffin in 1935.From 1935, the group sang in churches and on local radio, gaining a regular spot on radio station WIS in Columbia, South Carolina in 1936.[ They began as a traditional jubilee quartet, combining the clever arrangements associated with barbershop quartets with rhythms borrowed from the blues and jazz like scat singing. They developed a broad repertoire of styles – from Owens' mournful, understated approach in songs such as "Anyhow" or "Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name", to the group's highly syncopated arrangements in "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego". Like The Mills Brothers in popular music, they would often include vocal special effects in their songs, imitating train sounds in songs such as "Golden Gate Gospel Train". Langford often sang lead, using his ability to range from baritone to falsetto, while Johnson narrated. Wilson’s bass served as the anchor for the group and Owens harmonized with Langford and Johnson.In 1940 the group signed a new contract with Columbia Record’s Okeh label and shortened their name to Golden Gate Quartet.The quartet lost their pre-eminent position in gospel music after the war, when they faced competition from the newer hard gospel quartets.The Golden Gates revived their career in 1955, however, when they toured Europe for the first time where they became widely popular. The group made their first tour of Africa in 1962, and during the early 1960s gradually expanded their accompanying band to Incorporate guitar, piano, bass, and drums.The Golden Gates sang a lot of songs. One of the songs that I like to hear the group sing is God Told Nicodemus.

I don’t see much information about her singing gospel. It is said that James was once considered one of the most overlooked blues and R&B musicians in the music history of the United States. In my opinion, I think James was overlooked for gospel too because like I said, she could do it all, and she was great in every genre. In order for Etta James to sing gospel the way that she did, she must have had heaven in her heart. She had the right kind of voice for gospel. Etta could shout. (Singing) I consider Etta James a great gospel singer. If she had gospel hits, she must have helped gospel get some attention. I believe the spirit of the Lord was upon Etta when she sang the gospel. Not everybody can sing gospel, but Etta James could though she sang the blues. She had a voice. God gave it to her. I’m glad that Etta James left us some great gospel music. She attained popularity in the 1930’s and 1940’’s with her gospel recordings characterized by a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics & electric guitar that was extremely important to the origins of rock & roll. She was the first great recording star of gospel musicians to appeal to rhythm and blues and rock and roll audiences. Rosetta Tharpe recorded a song titled, My Lord’s Gonna Move This Wicked Race. She said he’s gonna raise up a nation that shall obey. And do you know what? I see more and more people becoming Christians. The lyrics said: “ Marvel that man if you want to be wise.” That man is Jesus. Sister Rosetta said just believe in Jesus and be baptized. Own five-piece group The Carr Singers around 1945 and touring the Cleveland/Detroit area.Not having too much success on the charts (except for “The Ball Game” song in 1952), which became one of Specialty label’s best selling gospel records which was featured in the movie 42), Carr grew increasingly unhappy with the straight gospel direction of her career and pleaded to record pops, jumps, ballads, and semi-blues. Overall the change from spiritual to secular music didn’t help Carr much in terms of sales or recognition.I don’t understand it. Wynona had a way with words in her songs. I love her gospel songs. Carr wrote things in her songs that explains my feelings and words I sometimes don’t know how to express. Each Day was one of those songs. Get a little nearer each day to the Lord. It’s a true song for me. When Carr sung the gospel, her lyrics were not hard to figure out. You knew she was singing about the Lord.I don’t understand what it was about Wynona’s day and time that she didn’t make it in the gospel. Maybe she should have kept on trying the gospel. Wynona had the songwriting talent and great voice for gospel. Maybe she was before her time or something, and it wasn’t intended for her to make it. Maybe the world wasn’t ready for her. According to history, she tried to bridge the gap between Gospel and Blues, but when she eventually got the chance to do it, it all seemed to be working. Then her health declined.God blessed Wynona to record the songs that she wrote. There was a blessing in it. Now, here I am today listening to those gospel songs, and her songs need to be heard today. He even collaborated on some of his recordings with artists, such as Stevie Wonder, El Debarge, and Sheila E just to name a few. The most popular songs by Andrea Crouch with his group The Disciples are “The Blood Will Never Loose it’s Power”. “Bless His Holy Name”, “Soon and Very Soon, “Jesus is the Answer”, “My Tribute”, and “Through It All”. After The Disciples in 1979, Crouch continued on with a solo career. Let’s talk about Andrae’s song through it all and what inspired him to write it. Welcome to the gospel greats.Shadrach Meshach Lockridge was the past or Calvary Baptist Church, a prominent African-American congregation in San Diego, California, from 1953 to 1933. He was known for his preaching across the United Stats and around the world.Lockridge was born in Robertson County, Texas, the oldest of eight children and the son of a Baptist minister. A graduate of Bishop College in Marshall, Texas, he worked for two years as a high school English teacher. In 1940 in Dallas, he felt led to preach.He held doctorates and numerous honorary degrees, and was often sought as a public speaker, even after he retired in 1993. He served as guest lecturer at numerous schools and universities and on the faculty of several others, including the Billy Graham School of Evangelism. Lockridge was active in the civil rights movement, and under his leadership Calvary Baptist hosted several of its leaders, including Martin Luther king Jr. Lockridge was great with words, and his best known message is "Amen" ("That's My King").Lockridge was born March 7, 1913, and he died April 4, 2000. He was 87 years of age. Let's listen now to his sermon, "That's My King".

They were a gospel group formed in 1959 in Los Angeles, CA as a traditional - based style group. It wasn't until 1961 as the group became famous. They added base, drums and keyboards to the standard guitar backup and developed a funky sound that split the difference between gospel, and rhythm and blues. In a break with tradition, the groups sound incorporated Soul, R&B, and Rock; all of which flourishes into their musical mix (one of their early hits was produced by Gamble and Huff) without diluting the essential religious essence of their material. The Mighty Clouds of joy sings and gives great praised to God. They praise the Lord with a shout and with instruments. When they sing a song, you can understand it , and that it's about the Lord. We got to think about the cost and who we shake hands with and who we make deals with. Probably even the ones we sit down and eat with because the Bible warns us about the evil ones. Proverbs 23 teaches that we need to consider what is diligently before us.Proverbs 23:4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Proverbs 23:6-7 warns us of a greedy kind of man that holds back from the poor and needy to increase his own wealth. If you’re not careful, you can sign your life away. That’s why the Bible warns us about a lot of things. Just because something looks and sounds good doesn’t mean it’s always good. Proverbs 3:31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.

It is said that gospel music didn't really become mainstream until the 1960's. Aretha Franklin brought the style to music and gospel was soon a hit with wider audience. There are gospel groups I've never heard of like The Mighty Wonders of Aquasco, Maryland. They would sound something like this (singing) ...The Mighty Wonders had a soulful acappella. You can hear them on YouTube. Just look up The Mighty Wonders of Aquasco Maryland "Old Ship of Zion". The label of their record is Mark Custom Records. It looks like that record label was around 1967 and in the 70's. I don't know what year the Mighty Wonders recorded their record. I wish I could have posted a picture of the group. I don't even know if they put a picture of themselves on the record. I wish that I could give you more history of the group. There seems to be variations of the group. The Sensational Mighty Wonders, The Mighty Wonders of Winston Salem, NC, and The Mighty Wonders. So The Mighty Wonders might still be around. (Podcast Theme) Gospel Greats!

I'm Gail Nobles and today's topic is Mahalia Jackson on The Gospel Greats. A show about great gospel singers. Did you know Mahalia Jackson once appeared on Sesame Street? It was 1969 when she sung the gospel "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands". (singing) ......... Mahalia would sing something like that, and she would never sing a song the same way all the time. Mrs. Jackson was a great gospel singer, and I was surprised to find out that she had appeared on Sesame Street.Mahalia would refuse to sing any but religious songs or indeed to sing at all in surroundings that she considered inappropriate. But she sang on the radio and on television. With her mainstream success, Jackson was criticized by some gospel purists she complained about her hand-clapping and foot-stomping and about her bringing "Jazz into the church". She had many notable accomplishments during this period, including her performance of many songs in the 1958 film St. Louis Blues, singing "Trouble of the World" in 1959's Imitation of Life, and recording with Percy Faith. At the March on Washington in 1963, Jackson sang in front of 250,000 people "How I Got Over" and "I Been Buked and I Been Scorned". Martin Luther king Jr. made his I Have a Dream speech there. She also sang "Take My Hand Precious Lord" at his funeral after he was assassinated in 1968. Mahalia made many performances and recorded about 30 albums (mostly for Columbia Records) during her career, and her 45 rpm records included a dozen "gold" - million sellers. Jackson's last album was What The World Needs Now (1969). The next year, in 1970, she and Louis Armstrong performed "Just a Closer Walk With Thee" and "When the Saints Go Marching In" together. She ended her career in 1971 with a concert in Germany and the she returned to the U.S., she made ne of her final television appearances on The Flip Wilson Show. There is a quote left from Mahalia Jackson. She said, "I sing God's music because it makes me feel free. It gives me hope. With the blues, when you finish, you still have the blues." When I hear Mahalia Jackson sing, I'm reminded to remember this song ......

They were a gospel group that first achieved popularity in the 1940's and the 1950's under the leadership of Claude Jeter. Jeter formed the group in 1938 as the "Four Harmony Kings" while he was working as a coal miner in West Virginia. After moving to Knoxville, Tennessee and obtaining their own radio show, the group changed it's name to the "Silvertone Singers" in order to avoid confusion with another ensemble known as the "Four Kings of Harmony". They added the same name Swan shortly thereafter, since Swan Bakeries sponsored their show; their wide exposure through radio brought them a contract with King Records.You're listening to the Gospel Greats.

The song was composed around 1860 by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman in Southern Oklahoma. Willis was inspired by The Red River, which reminded him of the Jordan River and the Prophet Elijah ascending to heaven in a chariot. The lyrics symbolically referred to the Underground Railroad. When I hear their music, I hear a new sound for Gospel Music. I have never heard anyone like them in America. Heavenese is a very different and unique group. They are on Sheila E.'s record label. She's a member of the Prince family with the hit "Glamorous Life" from 1985. The great gospel singer Andrae Crouch was also a participating artist with the group. Heavenese made their first single in 2010. Their beginning activity was formed in 1995 for the advanced gospel event "Gospel Fest" that started as a charity of the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake. It became "Heavenly Citizen" name from 2001. From 2012, the name was changed to Heavenese. The group has been singing for a long time and is still singing. They are also recognized as being early pioneers of today's Comtemporary Gospel sound. You may have heard R&B and Disco in their sound. The Mighty Clouds of Joy is the first gospel group known to be on Soul Train. One of my favorite songs from the Mighty Clouds of Joy is called "Mighty High". It is a 1975 Disco/R&B single. The single proved to be very popular with disco fans. It stayed at number one on the disco/dance chart for five weeks.
