The Tennessee Does, Part 4: The Hour of Death

Laurah is sick; apologies for any hoarseness this episode.  Episode Four covers the cases of four John and Jane Doe victims who, despite being discovered minutes or hours after death—and while still recognizable—have remained unidentified. In two of those cases, we reached out to forensic artist Carl Koppelman  to try and help improve the chances of reconnecting the victims with their identities.  Season 16 of The Fall Line takes on our most in-depth John and Jane Doe coverage yet: 22 files from MNPD’s cold-case unit, all covering the metro area’s unidentified decedents. Introducing: Morbidology - Jordyn Dumont

At 3:30PM on August 15th, 2016, a call came in to police in Bessemer City, North Carolina, that would set off a chain of events that shook the community to its very core. William Joseph McCullen, who was tasked with caring for his girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter, Jordyn Dumont, reported that she had gone missing. McCullen’s story was that he had put Jordyn down for a nap and then dozed off himself, only to wake up to an open front door and no sign of Jordyn. As detectives dug deeper into the case, it became clear that that Jordyn’s disappearance was only the tip of the iceberg… The investigation would expose a troubling pattern of neglect and abuse, raising serious questions about the role of law enforcement and social services and the devastating consequences that can occur when they fail to do their jobs. Introducing One Strange Thing: The Choir

Introducing (part of) The Fall Line team’s second podcast, One Strange Thing, where we search the nation’s news archives for stories that can’t quite be explained. One Strange Thing unfolds regional tales of the mysterious, the paranormal, the unexplainable, and the delightfully weird. In this episode clip, we consider that, perhaps some people are born lucky. . . and then there are others, who have singular experiences that can be described as, well, miracles. That seems to have been the case for fifteen people in a small Nebraska town in 1950.  To hear the rest of the episode, head over to One Strange Thing, wherever you listen:  Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-choir/id1526579247?i=1000565488253 Spotify:  https://open.spotify.com/episode/1SxcHDdENi93stUDbb6ujv?si=3Z32mRu6QJKY8HLD0l6m5A Sources on our website: https://www.onestrangethingpodcast.com/ Join us on Patreon for early release and ad-free episodes, exclusive stories, and bonus episodes: https://www.patreon.com/OneStrangeThing Find us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/OSTPod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/onestrangethingpod/  and Facebook https://www.facebook.com/One-Strange-Thing-114307627035607 Written and Hosted by Laurah Norton Researched by Michaela Morrill with additional research by Laurah Norton  Engineered and Scored by Chaes Gray  Produced and Script-edited by Maura Currie  Copyright One Strange Thing Podcast LLC 2022 Learn more about your ad choices. Presenting Gone South Season 2: The Dixie Mafia

Welcome to Season Two of Gone South, the Edward R. Murrow-Award winning documentary podcast from C13Originals. Starting in the early sixties, a rag-tag confederation of traveling criminals known as The Dixie Mafia terrorized every state from Georgia to Oklahoma. Its hundreds of members, unofficially headquartered in Biloxi, Mississippi, specialized in scams, heists and murder. Their ringleader — the estranged son of a prominent Oklahoma politician — was a skilled and charismatic outlaw named Kirksey Nix. When Nix was sentenced to life in prison at Angola for a murder he committed in New Orleans, The Dixie Mafia was thought to be extinct. But fifteen years later, a sitting criminal court judge named Vincent Sherry and his wife Margaret, a mayoral candidate for the city of Biloxi, were assassinated. As the case ran cold, authorities were forced to confront a disturbing reality: the reign of Kirksey Nix and The Dixie Mafia was far from over. Gone South is a creation and production of Peabody-nominated C13Originals, a Cadence13 studio, in association with Jed and Tom Lipinski. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Introducing 9/12

How did 9/11 the day become 9/11 the idea? That question drives award-winning host Dan Taberski (Missing Richard Simmons, Running From COPS, The Line) to shift his focus to what happened on 9/12, and every day after that. 9/12 is a poignant, surprising, and surprisingly funny seven episode series about people who wake up on 9/12 having to navigate a new, radically altered world. A teenager gets caught up in an out-of-control conspiracy theory that he helped start. A Pakistani business owner finds hundreds of his Brooklyn neighbors are disappearing. Joke-writers at The Onion must figure out just how soon is “too soon”? 9/12 asks what it all means. We know what happened on 9/11. But what happened on 9/12 to alter our memory and our perspective forever? Introducing Suspect

A big Halloween party at an apartment complex in Redmond, Washington. Themed rooms and costumed partygoers. But by the end of the party, one of the hosts is dead. The police look to the partiers as the prime suspects: was it the guy in the devil mask, the bank robber, the construction worker? As investigators comb through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even consult with a psychic, they zero in on one suspect in particular. But for what reason? Host and reporter Matthew Shaer (Over My Dead Body) returns to the scene of the crime, speaks with everyone about a night that still haunts them years later. It’s a series about race and policing, mislaid justice, cutting-edge science, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day -- choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse.
