Episode 266: Lick of the Month: Joe Pass on Bluesette
This week, we take a look at one of the hippest lines I've come across in a while. Joe Pass plays an incredible phrase combining rhythmic and harmonic mastery resulting in some mind bending sounds. This is the perfect phrase for what we have been talking about the past couple of months and I think, with some real analysis, this could produce some fresh and interesting ideas in your own playing. Enjoy the episode and remember to study the PDF for full benefits!

This week we finish up our series on rhythmic flexibility with a simple exercise that is deceivingly hard. We are going to practice playing 3 over 4 with a half note triplet. Then we flip the script and practice playing 4 over 3 in our final exercise. I hope you all have enjoyed this series and it pays off in the practice room allowing you more rhythmic freedom and ulmtimately, more interesting improvised solos. This month we take a look at the classic jazz standard, All Of Me, and use some of the concepts we have been discussing in the past couple of episodes. In the etude I have prepared for you, we are thinking rhythm first and basing the melodic and harmonic language from a different point of view. If you have worked on the exercises from episodes 260 and 261, you will be well prepared to play this material and get something out of it. Enjoy the episode and etude!

Welcome back! This week we take a look at the same exercise from last episode but challenge ourselves to do it with a real rhythm section. At first, this may not seem like a difficult thing, but as we start to practice, we realize that without the help of the metronome, it almost becomes a different exercise. This will ultimately help you with your flexibility in real life situations. Enjoy the episode and have fun!

Episode 260: Developing Rhythmic Flexibility Part 1
Welcome back! This month we are going to be taking a crack at some EXTREMELY difficult exercises aimed at getting your rhythmic comfort to the next level. For the first episode, we are taking a look at a rather simple bebop line and flipping it into a rhythmic tour de force. Be sure to take your time with this and don't rush the process. You must be comfortable and skilled at working with a metronome to complete this exercise and that may take some time. Have fun and remember to work through the pain!

You probably guessed this would be the tune of the month, but here it is. This month we will be taking a look at the great Sonny Rollins composition and, as always, I've prepared an etude for you over the chord progression. In this etude, I really focused on using the syncopation style we spoke about in episode 257. I also went ahead and borrowed a phrasing idea used by Clifford Brown in episode 258 and based much of the etude on it. I hope you enjoy and have fun with this composition on this fantastic chord progression!

Welcome to another Tune of the Month episode! This month we are finishing up our series on the playing of the legendary Charlie Parker by writing an etude over one of his most well known tunes. Welcome back! I wanted to try some new things this year and in the month of January we will take an up close look at some of the aspects of Charlie Parker's playing that makes it so unique and special. Bird was the architect of so many of the concepts we study today and his playing is just as relevant today as it was in the 1940's. We will kick this series off by looking at the way Parker connects chords and measures with half steps. There is some homework involved with this episode so make sure you get to work after listening!

Episode 233: Why Learn Tunes In Multiple Keys?
The month of October has five Fridays, so I decided to put out an episode that was more of a discussion than a lesson. We have spent the past three episodes talking about techniques for learning and understanding tunes in multiple keys, but haven't really asked why we are doing this. This week, I wanted to just talk about the advantages both immediate and long term of learning tunes in more than one key. Episode 232: Learning Tunes In Multiple Keys Part 3
This week, we continue our series on learning tunes in multiple keys. In this episode, we move on to another amazing jazz standard, How High the Moon. In a vacuum, this melody is much easier to play than Au Privave. But upon closer inspection, we realize there may be more hiding under the surface that make things a bit more difficult. We explore what to do when a melody has several key changes and how to make it easier to memorize and, ultimately, move it into other keys. Enjoy!

Episode 231: Learning Tunes In Multiple Keys Part 2
This week we continue our journey to learn how to play melodies in multiple keys. Last episode, we looked at a very simple melody, Sonny Moon for Two. This week, we are diving into a much more complicated melody, Au Privave, by the great, Charlie Parker. We get down to business numbering the different notes in the tune, exploring the technical side of a task such as this. Ultimately, we are looking to use our ears at the end of the day to put this melody in different keys. Enjoy!

This episode culminates our work on using blues phrasing in places we may not have thought of in the past. So far we have discussed using the blues on the ii-V progression, the iii-VI-ii-V progression, and we have looked at some amazing examples of legendary musicians using these techniques. Now it's time to put all of these things together in the form of an etude and see what we get. In this etude you will notice many techniques being used side-by-side in an effort to create a complete statement. Thanks for listening and enjoy the episode!

This week's episode is a natural followup to last week's and is something that is often discussed in our FB group. I'm providing 3 examples this week and pointing out where I would naturally ghost or de-emphasize notes to make things swing much more. Episode 202: Master Rhythm Changes Bridge Part 3
The third in our series over the rhythm changes bridge. This one gets us pretty out there! We are going to extend the tri-tone substitution model to move into the first bar of each phrase and then use some Coltrane changes to spice up the sound even more! Hope everyone is hanging in there and finds some relief and entertainment in this episode. Stay safe and healthy everyone!

Episode 201: Master Rhythm Changes Bridge Part 2
We are back with another episode on the bridge of rhythm changes. This week, we are getting a little bit more adventurous with the chord changes. The first example features a ii chord in addition to the V chord and in our second example we are going to investigate how to use a tri-tone substitution to great effect, giving us some fantastic tension and release sounds. This chord progression seems simple on the surface, but once we realize the possibilities, we can take it as far as we like. Enjoy the episode!

This month's listening recommendation takes us all the way back to 1927 with Louis Armstrong and his Hot Fives. The tune we are checking out is the amazing 'Struttin' With Some BBQ.' The energy in this recording is completely amazing and we have to remember the fact that Louis was in the process of revolutionizing jazz. Enjoy the episode and the recording!

This is episode 200 of the 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Podcast! Thanks so much for sticking with me and making this show such a success. It has been a pleasure to join you for the past 200 episodes and I look forward to many more!
This month we are starting our series on the rhythm changes bridge. This is an interesting and perfect chord progression for many different concepts in improvisation. For part 1, we will talk about the simplest way to play this bridge and how it is structured, preparing us for episodes to come where we will dive deeper and give ourselves some options. Enjoy!

Episode 199: Tune of the Month: Four
This week brings an end to our series on melodic fragments (crying sound) and, like we always do, we are finishing this one off with a bang featuring an etude over our tune of the month. This month features Miles Davis' composition, Four. It seemed appropriate to feature this tune since there is, in fact, a melodic fragment that starts the melody. It also contains great changes to practice these fragments we have been discussing this month. Enjoy and let me know if you have any questions!

This week's episode is building on the work we have already done in this series with an introduction to five note melodic fragments. Here we discuss the combination of our three note fragments into longer phrases that will allow you to cover more of the octave in a single idea. We are connecting the 3rd to the 7th and connecting the 5th to the 9th by way of our five note fragments. One more episode coming at you in this series next week where we take it to the next level so get your work done on these episodes this week!

Welcome to part 2 in our series on melodic fragments. This series is all about allowing you to center your solo around chord tones while using small melodic fragments to connect the important notes. Last week, we discussed two different fragments. One starting on the third and one starting on the fifth. This week, we discuss a fragment starting on the 7th and then talk about mixing the fragments up and how different they sound from each other. Episode 195: Melodic Fragments Part 1
This week's episode introduces us to a brand new topic that I think will help your playing tremendously. Melodic fragments are any grouping of a given number of notes to focus your melodic intent and keep you from meandering through a solo. We start the series with a 3 note fragment based on 2 different scale segments. The goal here is to develop fluency and flexibility using these over a blues so we can later get more complicated and creative. Enjoy the episode and make sure to practice the worksheet!

Episode 193: Reading: Part 3
This week continues our series on reading and becoming a more well rounded musician. Remember, you will get a lot more gigs if you can read at a high level! This week brings us to syncopation. We have already done episodes on tough keys and sub-division, now it's time to take a look at one of the most important aspects of jazz: having a good handle on playing off the beat. Syncopation is a defining characteristic of jazz and we need to be able to land on each and every part of the beat. These exercises will challenge you, no doubt about that, but if you keep at it and follow through, you will see your reading skills increase tremendously through these exercises. Enjoy!

Happy New Year everyone! This year is going to kick off with our series on reading. Episode 182: Major Chords Without a 7th
We concentrate a lot on 7ths when it comes to playing jazz. But what do we do when we see a major chord that has no 7th?? This is a tricky thing for us improvisers in certain cases. I know that I had trouble doing this before some of my teachers clarified it for me. This week we take a look at 3 different phrases and how we can adapt them to major triads or major 6th chords. Episode 180: Sourcing Vocabulary From Melodies
This week continues our wildly popular Lick of the Month Series. This month, we are taking things in a different direction. We all look toward transcriptions and recordings to get vocabulary for our own playing. This is because it's a fantastic way to study the masters and let them guide us through what sounds great over chord progressions. But have you ever used a melody that you really like to develop some vocabulary? It may be something that we all overlook as a non-traditional place to get some really cool material for our solos. This week , we take a look at Charlie Parker's Ornithology (I realize I misspoke in the episode and called it Anthropology...oops!) , borrow some of his genius, then slightly tweak it into something we can use in many situations. Enjoy the episode!

Not much to say about this week's episode, you know what to do. Still requiring you to sing and these are our most complicated lines yet. This is going to be the last in our series of voice leading exercises and I want to reiterate: this is some of the most important stuff you can be doing in your practice time! If you're having trouble with this material, make sure you go back and try the other episodes again, it will get there eventually. Enjoy the episode and work hard!

Episode 178: Voice Leading Exercises Part 3
This week continues our series on voice leading and doing something that many of you will find uncomfortable: SINGING! We continue to make the kines more difficult by turning our half notes into quarter notes. What you will notice, however, is the basic direction and voice leading of the line stays the same throughout. This follows logic that we perform a lot on this show, which is slowly increasing the difficulty of something until it is sounding amazing. One more episode in this series next week, then we move on to something else. Enjoy this week's podcast!

Episode 177: Tune of the Month: I Mean You
This month we take a look at yet another Monk tune and we focus our efforts on phrasing. Phrasing is the biggest and most important factor when it comes to playing a solo that makes sense and is memorable. Our goal with this month's episode is to get you to think about phrasing over the chord changes. We have a tendency to play these little self-contained phrases that stop right before the chord moves on. When we break this habit, so many of our limitations disappear. Enjoy this episode and remember to grab the PDF exercises and etudes!

Episode 176: Herbie Hancock Voicings!
This week continues our lick of the month series, but in a slightly different way. Normally, we take a look at a traditional piece of vocabulary from a solo. This week, we are going to dissect some Herbie Hancock voicings and turn them into arpeggios. This will force you to play some different and wider intervals than you normally do and should open up your ears and fingers to some new possibilities. I often work in this manner when I feel like I'm stuck and playing the same things all the time. Enjoy the episode and don't forget to grab the PDF!

Episode 174: Voice Leading Exercises
This week is all about using your natural instrument to start learning and hearing some concepts that we all need in our tool kit. You will be singing this week and for the next few episodes so get your voice tuned up and ready to go! This will eventually lead us to some great ways of coming up with our own vocabulary organically and not forcing ourselves to learn and memorize tons of vocabulary. While the former is still something we should be doing on a regular basis, some folks (like myself), aren't very good at memorizing and regurgitating. This is an alternate method that I think will be valuable for a lot of you out there. Enjoy!

Episode 173: Tune of the Month: Well You Needn’t
This month we cover one of my favorite Thelonious Monk tunes, Well You Needn't. This tune is unique in many ways. It uses almost exclusively half-step motion in the chord changes which provides us a unique challenge when improvising. In this episode we talk about using motivic development yet again to gain some facility and knowledge of the chord changes. This is a great way to approach this tune when you're starting out and develop fluency before trying more complicated devices. Enjoy the episode and remember to grab the PDF!

This episode continues our Lick of the Month series utilizing a line from Dexter Gordon's solo on Three O'clock in the Morning. We talked about the melody to this tune on a previous episode, but now it's time to take a look at part of his solo and learn from it. Episode 171: Fast Tempo Hacks
This episode is in response to a question from one of my students, Mike. His concern was those tunes with fast tempos and dense chord changes. Something we all struggle with. This episode is all about turning those tunes into an opportunity instead of a section to be feared. By turning them into a ballad or a set of cadenzas, we can free ourselves up to try new things and develop new pathways through tunes and keys. When we look at things like this as learning tools, we suddenly change our view on them and can use tough tunes to create momentum instead of worry. Enjoy the episode!

Episode 169: Stylizing A Melody Part 1
Playing the melody is an often overlooked skill. We focus so much on the solo we are about to play, that the melody becomes an afterthought. This week, we put an end to that thinking and make sure we treat the melody with the care and respect it deserves. We start our journey by transcribing the melody, and only the melody, to a great Dexter Grodon recording of the tune, Three O'clock in the Morning. Dexter is going to teach us some things (as he always does) about swing, feel, and articulation. This will ultimately rub off in our own playing and turn our melodies into things we look forward to rather than just getting through them.

It's no secret that Clark Terry is one of my all time favorite musicians. His mastery, playfulness, and feel make, for me, the total package when it comes to what makes jazz great. This week we look at a chorus of his solo from his own composition, Haig & Haig. Normally, we drill down on a specific topic or device in these lick of the month episodes but, this month, we take a look at an entire statement and figure out what makes this story that Clark is telling so compelling. Episode 166: Playing Double Time Lines Part 2
This week continues our discussion on approaching and ultimately being able to use double time lines in our playing. Last week we discussed the differences between feel and articulation when using double time, this week, we start to discuss actually applying these lines to our solos. We are searching for opportunities to utilize a short ii V I progression. There are several readily available suggestions including the tune Confirmation and also Rhythm Changes. In this episode, we feature another listener contribution. Episode 163: Tune of the Month: Solar
This month we take a look at the great jazz standard, Solar. We are trying something different this time. We are placing a pretty serious restriction on ourselves over this tune, playing in only one octave! This may be one of the most frustrating things you have ever done but it really makes you think about the material you are playing at all times. It's so easy to fall back on what we know, and that's exactly what we confront in this episode. When confining yourself to a single octave you really have to think about where you are going and not fall back on any muscle memory or lines that you play without purpose. Enjoy the episode and the etude!

The thing about this transcription, though, is that it might be the hippest thing I have heard in a long time. This week is a continuation of the important information from last week's episode. Episode 160: Simplifying Complicated Chords
This week is about limiting our note choice to provide more meaningful melodies and harmonic impact. Most of the time, if we try to fit the maximum amount of information into a given space, we will end up sounding contrived and like we are trying to fit information into a kind of improvisational clown car. This episode is all about creating statements that limit the notes we can use over a given chord. This frees up our minds to think about more than just the notes and clarifies our thinking. This will be a beneficial episode if you feel like you know WHAT to play over certain chords but can't figure out HOW to play them in an effective way. Enjoy!

Episode 159: Tune of the Month: Have You Met Miss Jones
This is one of my favorite jazz standards of all time. This tune can be very intimidating due to the bridge. The topic of today's show is how to approach a tune that has a tricky section causing you to avoid it. By using a simple trick that allows you to think through difficult changes slowly, we can start to sort some of these things out in our playing. Thinking fast is essential when playing this music, but thinking slowly is also an essential part of practicing. Learning to balance the two will benefit your playing tremendously. Enjoy the episode!

This week features one of my favorite Trumpet/Flugelhorn players from Bristol, UK, Gary Alesbrook. Gary plays an amazing version of Clifford Brown's Joy Spring on his Instagram page and we are using that as the basis for this episode. This one is a bit different from our usual lick of the month series. Episode 157: SUS Chord Tricks Part 2
This week continues our look at simple, actionable devices that we can use over sus chords. Last week we talked about pentatonics you can use over over these chords. This week, is all about triadic material that you can easily insert over these types of chords. The first device is so simple you can start using it right away. The second may be a little bit tougher, but I promise you will have it down in no time. Enjoy the episode and remember to support us on Patreon if you enjoy this show!

Episode 156: SUS Chord Tricks
The inspiration for this week's show came from a student of mine that was having trouble with sus chords. She wasn't sure what to do when she saw a sus chord and what was appropriate as far as melodic devices. So, this week, I'm giving all of you the exact same material that I gave her. We investigate a couple of pentatonic scales that work very nicely over sus chords and the differences in sound between them. Enjoy!

Episode 155: Tune of the Month: Confirmation
Confirmation is one of those tunes that is very scary to look at. There's a good reason for this as Confirmation is usually played at extremely fast tempos and has a ton of changes! But don't fret, we are here to simplify some of the most difficult parts and give you a way to approach them with sequences. Sequential playing is an important aspect of playing bebop and tunes like Confirmation. It does a couple of important things: Gives you good sounding material that helps you learn the texture of the changes and helps you to be less intimidated by very difficult harmony. A win-win all around. Enjoy the episode and remember to grab the etude I have written for you by clicking the link below!

This week continues our lick of the month series with a great piece of vocabulary and concept from the master, John Coltrane. Triads are such a great device when it comes to improvising and in this episode, Coltrane shows us how to masterfully use triads in a very interesting way. We also come up with an exercise based on Trane's line that we can use to get better at our instrument and develop some new things to say in our solos. Episode 153: Short Vocabulary
This week we are talking about something that I think will be truly revolutionary for many of you out there. Vocabulary is an essential part of learning the jazz language. The tricky part is how difficult it is and how frustration can cause you to give up on this important part of your jazz education. This is where short bits of vocabulary come in very handy. The ability to take these lines through all 12 keys without much trouble will be important for you to have fun and not give up. Have fun with this episode!

Episode 152: Editing Philip’s Line
This week we take a peak at a line one of our listeners, Philip, came up with and posted in our 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Community Group on Facebook. I love the fact that Philip is thinking about many of the concepts we talk about on the show and his initiative to start composing his own lines is impressive. There were a few notes I thought could be changed in this line to make it have a little bit more harmonic gravity and I decided to make an episode detailing those thoughts. Hope you enjoy the episode and come out of it with something you can take with you in your own line writing exercises!

Episode 151: Tune of the Month: Recorda Me
Welcome back to another tune of the month episode! This month features one of my all time favorite tunes by Joe Henderson. Recordame is a tune with multiple personalities and in this episode, we focus on the first section and a very specific sound. We are all about harmonic minor and using this sound over a minor seventh chord. First we explore the scale and it's make-up. Then, we give a couple of short phrases to get you into the sound. Ending the episode with another etude designed for you to see the new sound in action and give you some useful material to draw from in your own learning.

Episode 150: Johnny Griffin’s Masterful Blues Playing
This week we feature a piece of content from one the absolute masters of the music. Johnny Griffin and Thelonious Monk had an amazing relationship and, in my opinion, Griffin did some of his best playing with Monk. This piece of vocabulary is from their recording from 1958: Monk In Action live at the Five Spot in New York. Johnny teaches us a couple of things in this excerpt. How to combine blues playing with bebop playing and how to use rhythm with maximum effect. Enjoy the episode!

This week's episode concludes our series on chord extensions. Last week we talked about pure and diminished dominants, this week we wrap things up with altered and augmented dominants. I hope this information has been helpful to you. I think it gives great insight into and clears up some of the confusion that can come from certain chord symbols. You'll notice that many of the extensions are used over multiple chords. The small differences are the ones that make a difference here, so make sure you study this material carefully. Enjoy!

In this episode, we talk about the differences and listen to both chords both arpeggiated and voiced with all notes at the same time. Episode 147: Tune of the Month: There Will Never Be Another You
This month's tune of the month episode is a tune I have been playing and thinking a lot about lately. There Will Never Be Another You is a great jazz standard with many of the chord movements that we talk about on this show. The circle of fourths is very present in this particular composition and gives us a chance to work on many concepts relating to tension and release. This is exactly what we are doing this week when we look at a #9 to b9 resolution model. These two notes sound fantastic in tandem with one another and when they resolve is one of the most effective sounds in jazz.
In this episode we feature an exercise utilizing this line in multiple keys and then we have written an etude for you featuring this sound in many different situations. Enjoy!

Seamus Blake is one of the best modern jazz musicians in the world. Universally respected for his approach to the music, studying Seamus' playing should be a thing that we all do on a regular basis. This week we take a look at two different pieces of vocabulary that he plays over 'Blues Up & Down,' from the Sax Summit record. Seamus shows us some great devices including a lot of chromaticism. This tune is orignally played at a blazing tempo (250+!!), but in this episode, we slow it down and break down what Seamus is doing. Enjoy the lick of the month and make sure you grab the PDF for this episode!

Episode 145: Chord Extensions Part 2: Minor Seventh
This week we continue our series on chord extensions by looking at the minor seventh chord. The extensions we use on this chord happen to be 9, 11, and 13. You'll notice that they are all diatonic which makes things a little bit more simple when it comes to this chord. These extensions also form a minor triad built off the ninth, giving us a nice start on some triad pairs. Episode 141: Linear Piano Voicings
This episode is all about playing piano voicings as single note lines. This is a great way to break out of the patterns you may be working on and start to include some great intervalic melodies that you may never have thought of. The thing that makes piano voicings sound great is the structure of their intervals. By extracting these intervals and making them into a single note line, we harness the power of these sounds and apply them to more than just a chordal instrument. I use this tactic often when I'm feeling uninspired and looking for some less common lines in my playing. I hope you enjoy this episode and get something out of it!

Episode 138: Metronome Games!
This week is all about our most important tool as musicians: the metronome. This week we are starting with some very basic material and we will progress over the next couple of episodes into more and more challenging ways of using this device. Have you ever really thought about where your time lies? I mean REALLY thought about it? Starting from this question we allow ourselves to accurately asses where we are with this important skill. This week is about the basics. Using the metronome on all four beats, on 2 & 4, and finally, switching that to 1 & 3. If we focus on doing this in both a swing and straight feel, we are well on our way to tightening up our time and feel.
I want to take a moment to thank everyone out there for another fantastic year. You, the listeners, are really what keeps me making all of these episodes and your energy and enthusiasm to keep coming back for more is truly awesome. I love interacting with such passionate musicians and I'm really looking forward to the year ahead!
