Paul Feig
Today on "Tea With Twiggy," I'm thrilled to be joined by the wonderfully talented Paul Feig. Known for his flair in both fashion and film, Paul's journey from Michigan to Hollywood is as inspiring as it is entertaining.
From Humble Beginnings to Hollywood's Limelight
Paul's story starts in Michigan, far from the glitz of Hollywood. Growing up in an era of cultural shifts, he soaked in stories that later wove into his films. His move to California, starting as a Universal Studios tour guide and then attending USC Film School, was a leap into the world of movie magic. But it wasn't all red carpets; Paul's early days in stand-up comedy at 15 were filled with laughter and learning curves.
A Household of Humour
Paul didn't grow up in a showbiz family, but humour was always part of his life. His dad's storytelling and jokes laid the groundwork for Paul's love of both sophisticated and simple comedy. Influenced by comedic greats like Steve Martin and George Carlin, Paul developed a keen sense for what tickles the funny bone.
Behind the Camera
Paul's acting roles led to some disappointments, but they paved the way for his directorial debut. Saving up from acting gigs, he created “Freaks and Geeks”—a show that, despite its initial struggle, became a cult classic and a turning point in teen TV narratives. Working with Judd Apatow, Paul transitioned to directing, where he could enhance performances while drawing empathetically on his acting experience.
Creating Comedic Masterpieces
Paul's stories behind hits like “Bridesmaids” showcase not just his directorial skills but the power of collaboration. The improvisational brilliance of Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo is just one example of the magic that happens on his sets. His knack for spotting talent is evident in actors like Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne, who shine in his films.
Adapting and Evolving
We also chat about adapting to changes in the film industry, especially during the pandemic. Paul shares insights into the editing process, likening it to solving a jigsaw puzzle, and discusses the unpredictable nature of test screenings. Despite controversies like those around “Ghostbusters: Answer the Call,” Paul emphasises the collaborative nature of filmmaking.
Paul's upcoming projects, including action comedies with stars like John Cena and Awkwafina, promise more creative brilliance. So grab a cuppa, and let's dive into the world of Paul Feig!
