Steve Williams Tell All- Tiger Woods' Crazy Life, How He Got Fired, Did He Ruin His Legacy?
Steve Williams- the worlds greatest golf caddy of all time! This was such an honor. Steve is by design a pretty reclusive guy. This is the first long form podcast about his life that he has ever done so it’s a true honor he agreed to do it.As you would expect, there is a lot of Tiger Wood chat ahead- they were, after all, best friends and had an incredible working relationship for 12 very successful years. Tiger has won a total of 15 majors…and Steve was his caddy for 13 of them.We talk about Tigers mindset, the dynamics of their relationship, how Steve coped with the backlash from Tigers well publicized indiscretions, the perks, and bonuses from being the caddy of the world’s best golfer and so much more. But this is not Tigers story- this is the Steve Williams story and I’m so excited to give you a peak into the mind of this reluctant hero who for a period in the early 2000s was New Zealand’s highest paid sportsperson….and then gave a lot of it away to Starship hospital.Big thanks to my sponsors who make these weekly conversations possible. Simone Maier - Multi-Sport World Champ on Racing with Richie McCaw, Sexual Abuse & Mental Health
Simone Maier- most of you probably won’t know the name, but you are in for a treat! Simone is, plain and simply a multisport savage. She has won the Coast to Coast four times, after moving to NZ from Germany at 20 unable to speak any English. She was also teammates in a Godzone event with Richie McCaw and was a contestant on the reality TV show “Tracked.”But what makes Simone's story is the adversity. Before she came here and experienced the highest or highs, she had to endure very low lows growing up, events which culminated in Simone spending a full year in rehab for an eating disorder and self-harm. Because of all the themes we discuss, I’ve included a list of resources and numbers available to call in NZ if you feel the need to talk to a professional (You’ll find these at the bottom of this page). This episode was made entirely possible by the team at Radix. Radix sponsor Simone and took care of all her travel arrangements for this chat. We both gush about how much we love Radix products in this chat. Simone is one of the elite communities that have known about Radix stuff for years. High performance sports people have been using the stuff for years. BONUS MINI EPISODE: Dom Vs The Mad Butcher- the argument
This is a very short bonus episode that I thought I'd share with you guys. Recently the podcast went through a rebrand from "Runners Only! With Dom Harvey" to "The Dom Harvey Podcast."Part of this rebrand included a short video that blew up on social media of The Mad Butcher and myself having a heated argument about the theme of the podcast, which ALOT of people thought was very real. This snippet is that argument in its entirely and what was said immediately afterwards. There was no script, no guideline's, and very little pre discussion. The Mad Butcher sat down and I asked him if we could have a fake argument about the name of the podcast and then we both just went for it. The Mad Butcher - Racism Controversy, Near Death Experience, Warriors & Kiwis Legacy
Sir Peter Leitch is better known as "The Mad Butcher"He is a man most New Zealanders recognize from his voice. He is New Zealand’s most high-profile butcher, a very successful businessman, a diehard supporter of the Warriors and Rugby league. And, he would argue this point, but I think he is a man that probably doesn’t get the recognition he deserves for his charitable acts. It’s hard to think of someone who have been more generous with their time and money than the Mad Butcher.I have always liked the Mad Butcher. But I like him even more after this and I hope you guys enjoy it too. This episode is bought to you by Generate Kiwisaver.Generate is an award-winning KiwiSaver provider, with a track record of chart topping long-term performance. If you are curious to find out more, you should check them out: www.generatekiwisaver.co.nz/getadvice/(Also on their website is a copy of their product disclosure statement. Suzie Bates - Cricket & Basketball Career, Partying with Kobe, Coaching Melie Kerr, and more!
Suzie Bates is the GOAT of New Zealand women’s cricket. And just an awesome all-round human. She first made the New Zealand team in 2006 when she was 19. Now she is 36 and still playing like the absolute boss that she isShe’s also a bloody talented basketballer and went to the Olympics in 2008 playing for the NZ side- we talk about that experience including how she ended up partying with the USA “Redeem team” including LeBron and Kobe.We chat about her alter-ego "Betsy" who comes out after a couple of chardonnays, what Mick Jagger WASN’T wearing when she met him in his dressing room and much much more.I was left with the impression that she has such a growth mindset that she doesn’t take a lot of time to pause and reflect on all the cool stuff she has achieved and experienced in her life. And there is so so much to reflect on!Thanks to the legends at Radix Nutrition for getting behind this episode.Mike and the team at Radix have been key players in helping this little podcast grow from nothing into something I’m really proud of.If I could ask one favor of you, it would be to check out their website:https://radixnutrition.co.nz/ Hosted on Acast. Sir John Kirwan: NZ's Mental Health Pioneer, Managing Depression, and more! (Re-Release)
This podcast with Sir John Kirwan was first released in September 2022.I am re-sharing it now to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 in New Zealand. If you are an early listener to the podcast who has already heard this one, just skip it.But if you have just recently discovered the podcast, you may really enjoy this one- I still get messages every other week from people telling me they listened and got a lot of valuable tips from Sir John. Either way, thanks for checking the podcast out. I genuinely appreciate you being here to read this. Sir John Kirwan is an All Black legend. But its what he has done since retiring from sport that has made him an all-round legend.15 years ago JK reluctantly spoke publicly about his depression and mental health struggles (we discuss his reluctance in this chat- I won't tell you who pushed him into doing it!)Mental health has never had more chat that what it currently gets. This guy was the trailblazer. NOBODY really talked about this stuff publicly before Sir John. There are so many tips, tricks and tools from JK in this conversation that we can all use to improve our mental health. We also reminisce a little bit about his time as a butcher, an All Black and a DB Bitter Warrior. If this episode triggers anything, PLEASE chat to someone you trust. Or text 1737 anytime (NZ). You’ll get to chat to a trained counsellor.Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Dr. Ben O'Keefe - Abuse from Rugby Fans, 2023 Rugby World Cup, Was Richie McCaw A Cheat?
Dr. Ben O'Keefe is one of the world’s Best rugby referees. He is also a doctor who specializes in Ophthalmology (fancy word for eye stuff). He made headlines for the death threats and social media backlash he experienced after he reffed the super rugby final this year between the Crusaders and the Chiefs. At the time of releasing this episode he is busy representing New Zealand as an official referee at the RWC in France. His games include France Vs Uraguay, Japan Vs Argentina and South Africa Vs Ireland. In this conversation we explore Ben’s journey from general medicine to ophthalmology, his passion for rugby, and how he balances both these intense careers. I invited Ben on after he blew up on Instagram by sharing some of the gross comments he got after the super rugby final. Also, he is just an inspiring New Zealander who is kicking serious life goals and probably doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. John Hart, Former All Black Coach - Mental Health Struggles, Remembering Jonah Lomu, and more!
This is the very first podcast that former All Black coach John Hart has ever agreed to do (thanks to our mutual mate Kerre Woodham for convincing him to do it)..John was the coach of the legendary Auckland NPC side who won titles in 82, 84 and 85. That 1985 side also won the Ranfurly shield and kept it for 61 games which remains a record in shield history. We talk at length about the disgraceful fallout after the 1999 RWC semifinal loss against France, where he was spat on at a horse race in Christchurch, something which spiraled John into a deep and long-lasting depression.John is a man who has devoted a lot of his life to NZ sport- in rugby he coached 142 games for a total of three teams and retired from the sport with a win record of 84.5%He keeps his head down these days by choice so I can’t thank him enough for coming over to chat- especially about some of the less sexy stuff.I really enjoyed spending time with John and I hope you do too. Thanks very much to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.Without there support, it would not be possible to keep bringing you these conversations- it’s a fair amount of work each week and their investment is crucial. Cameron Jones OPENS UP About Shortland Street, Life in Hollywood, Mental Health Issues
Cameron Jones is a New Zealand actor. If you’re an old fan of Shortland Street, you may remember him from that. He cut his teeth as Dallas Jones the ambulance driver in Shorties ten years ago.He was also in the Hobbit movies, a Christmas movie with Dolly Parton and has a brand new movie called Home Kills which has been showing as part of the NZFF.I didn’t know much about Cam prior to this conversation. But I learned so much- what his dad thought about his career choice as an actor and the final conversation they had before his dad passed away, the stress of trying to break into the LA acting scene, the bizarre thing he got offered thousands of dollars to do, his struggles with his mental wellbeing and much more.A mutual friend of ours suggested I get Cam on as a guest and he didn’t disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know more about him and I hope you do too. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.I start every day with a protein shake made with protein powder from Radix. Sam Harvey Reflects on Tying WORLD RECORD for Non-Stop Running, Tall Poppy Syndrome, and MORE!
In June 2023 Sam Harvey from Christchurch came painfully close to breaking the world record for ultra distance running, after running pretty much non-stop for more than four days.Sam ran for 101 hours and covered 677km at an event in Queensland. His heart and mind are so unbreakable that he was FORCED by organizers to pull out of the race after he fell over and collapsed on the course.Sam is a fascinating guy with an unbreakable mindset so this episode is so much more than a podcast about running. For most listeners, as well as getting to know a bit more about this average ordinary guy who is on a mission to redefine what the human mind and body is capable of, most of us will get to learn a bit more about the fringe running events known as backyard ultras. To learn more about CurraNZ (the exceptional black currant supplement that Sam and I talk about) you can check them out here:https://curranz.co.nz/Use the code DOM for 20% discount on CurraNZ Original 30sThanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.I know I’m supposed to say how much I like them because of our professional arrangement, but I genuinely was a fan of their products even before they approached me to sponsor the podcast. Arch Jelley pt. 2 - 100-Year-Old Reflects on Career, Technology, Life After Death, and more!
Arch Jelley is one of New Zealand’s greatest running coaches. He coached the great John Walker through his entire career and all the highlights that entailed including an Olympic goldmedal in 1976 and 3 Commonwealth Games medals, over 100 sub 4 minute miles and the first man to run a mile in under 3.50.But this podcast has very little to do with running. I met Arch last year when he was 99 when we recorded a podcast and we have remained in touch since then. On the week of this podcast being released, Arch turns 101. So, I invited him back for a podcast where I would put YOUR questions to him. Arch is still in tremendous health, physically and mentally, so this was a real treat- it’s not often you get to pick the brains of someone who has seen and done so much and is still around and able to share that wisdom. Ryan Hall on Running Fastest EVER Marathon & Half-Marathon in USA History [Bonus Episode]
Fun fact: Ryan Hall and I raced each other in 2011 at the Boston marathon (only, he had no idea we were racing). I finished in 5528th place with a time of 3 hours 20 minutes. Ryan finished in 4th place with a time of just under 2 hours and 5 minutes, around 2 minutes per kilometer quicker than me!That day he set a record that still stands now as the fastest marathon ever run by an American. On this episode, we trace the highs and lows of his illustrious running career, from that epic run in Boston to the disappointment of having to pull out of the Olympic marathon in London and the career ending injuries he endured.Ryan gives us a peak behind the curtain on the massive physical and mental effort that goes into preparing for these huge races- both for himself as a runner, and now in his role as coach to his wife, Sarah Hall, who is a total badass. We talk so much more than running though:Ryan's now a tank as a result of years of weightlifting so we chat about that transformation. He was 63 kilos when he stopped running…now he kind of looks like Dwayne Johnson. We also chat about Ryan and his wife Sarah's decision to adopt 4 sisters from an orphanage in Ethiopia and the challenges of raising a family who know very little English language or American culture.Ryan's story is about resilience, perseverance, and the courage to let go, pivot, and embrace new paths. Ryan has such a good attitude. He might be the most laid back and chilled serious athlete you could ever meet. I loved our time together in Boston and I hope you do too. Thanks to Radix for sponsoring this episode. If its protein powders, smoothie recovery powders or freeze dried just-add-water meals that actually taste nice and give you the nutrients you need, check them out: https://radixnutrition.co.nz/ Hosted on Acast. Mils Muliaina Reflects on All Blacks Career, Wrongful Arrest, Life After Rugby, and more!
Mils Muliaina would dispute this, but he is one of the Greatest All Blacks of all time.He was only the second All Black to play 100 tests (less than a month after Richie became the first). He was part of the team that won the 2011 Rugby world cup against France in that nail biting final. He was also part of the team that lost the world cup 4 years earlier after being beaten by France. But Mils is so much more than a former All Black and accordingly, rugby only makes up a small part of this epic 90-minute conversation. Dean Barker (Yachting legend and bowel cancer survivor)
DEAN BARKER:Dean Barker is a name that is synonymous with yachting in NZ. Especially the Americas cup. When you think of that event his name is up there with Coutts and Butterworth back in the day and now Burling and Tuke.Unfortunately, he is probably remembered most for being the Team NZ skipper when we were on the receiving end of one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history- remember that? San Francisco 2013. Team NZ was up 8-1 then we ended up losing to Jimmy Spitalls Oracle boat by 9 races to 8. We reflect on that period in great detail in this conversation. We also chat at length about Deans battle with bowel cancer recently. Bowel cancer is the most commonly reported cancer in New Zealand…and probably one of the least talked about cancers. As a country we have 3000 cases and 1200 deaths each year. https://bowelcancernz.org.nz/Dean has always struck me as being like an old school kiwi guy- stoic, strong, silent and intensely private. So I really appreciate him coming on the podcast and being so open about some really personal and painful stuff. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Sarah Gearhart (American author)
Sarah Gearhart is a New York based sportswriter and now author. You name the organization; she has probably written for it! USA Today, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, ESPN, Runner's World, Vice Sports…In April 2023 she published her first book: “We Share the Sun: The Incredible Journey of Kenya's Legendary Running Coach Patrick Sang and the Fastest Runners on Earth.”https://www.booktopia.com.au/we-share-the-sun-sarah-gearhart/book/9781639363551.htmlI met Sarah in Boston during the 2023 marathon weekend, and we sat down for this podcast conversation about her experience writing this book including how she convinced the notoriously private Patrick Sang to take part in it, the many many months she spent in Kenya and her observations and experiences with the greatest marathon runner of all time, Eliud Kipchoge. And his coach, Patrick Sang.I’m a sucker for a running book. I’ve read just about every single one imaginable. This is my new favorite. (Disclosure: I am a Kipchoge fan boy. But this is so much more than a book about running or the guy behind the guy). Whether or not you buy or read the book. I do hope you enjoy the conversation with Sarah. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Even before they jumped on board as a sponsor, I was a fan of their products. Jay-Jay Feeney (NZ Queen of music radio)
Jay-Jay Feeney is the undisputed queen of music radio in New Zealand. She started the radio station The Edge and grew it into the massive brand that it remains to this day. She currently hosts one of New Zealand’s most listened to afternoon shows on the station, More FM.She is the author of two books and has won too many NZ radio awards to count!.This is a strange episode...jeust because of the intensely personal nature of it. I can’t imagine I will ever record a podcast that is as raw, emotive, and vulnerable as this one is. The reason being- the personal relationship.JJ and I got married in 2004. We separated about 5 years ago but remain very, very close. Because of this relationship, we know everything about one another and had the ability to touch upon some very serious stuff. Because of that a trigger warning is needed- this podcast episode discusses family violence and sexual abuse, infertility and IVF, depression, and suicide. If you listen to this and need some professional help in New Zealand, you can call or text 1737 free of charge to talk to a trained counsellor. This podcast also includes a lot of light moments too as we zoom in on some of JJs many career highlights. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode: . https://radixnutrition.co.nz/Adding to their popular Protein range, they have just launched a new range of breakfasts which are incredible: strawberry banana, coconut, vanilla, mixed berry, Apple and cinnamon and chocolate. Kelsey Waghorn (Whakaari White Island eruption survivor)
Kelsey Waghorn was a Whakaari White Island tour guide in December 2019 when it erupted. This is a powerful and raw conversation with Kelsey. And it is a tough listen in parts, made slightly easier thanks to Kelsey's ability to find the humor and light in the darkest situations. We talk about Kelsey and her life before, during and after the eruption, the resilience and courage it takes to navigate life after such a harrowing experience.Through her journey of healing, both physically and mentally, Kelsey opens up about her struggles with PTSD and how she learned to be kinder to herself. Her story serves as a stark reminder that even in the darkest of times, laughter and hope can help us heal and move forward.I loved Kelsey's company so much. She left me feeling inspired, moved and motivated. She doesn’t do much stuff like this so I can’t thank her enough. Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Simon Cochrane ("Ultraman" world record holder)
Simon Cochrane:A week before this podcast conversation took place, Simon Cochrane travelled from his home in Hamilton NZ to take part in the "Ultraman" event in Noosa as a relative unknown in this event. After 3 days of intense and brutal racing he not only won the event, he also SMASHED the world record. The Ultraman event is a crazy few days of racing. It was created in 1983 by some mad bastards who, I'm assuming, decided the Ironman distance was too easy LOL. This is what an Ultraman weekend looks like:Day 1: 10km ocean swim and a 145km bike ride.Day 2: 276-km bike ride.Day 3: 84-km run (double marathon). This is definitely an episode for the running and multi-sport nerds. But there are takeaways in this conversation for everyone. Including time management and how to get more out of yourself every day, and how you can change your situation if you aren’t happy with it and the importance of enjoying everything you do- and how that’s a mindset you can choose. As Simon says with his endurance events: “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.”Thanks very much to my pals at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode:https://radixnutrition.co.nz/ Hosted on Acast. Hadyn Jones is an ultramarathon runner (that’s one of the caps he wears). He is also a well-known current affairs TV host. All roles that he juggles successfully. His secret includes getting his long runs done when the kids are in bed!We discussed his running journey, his career including his early years working with Sir Paul Holmes and the decision to relocate and work from Taranaki. Leigh Hart (NZ TV royalty- his most raw & vulnerable interview ever)
If you say you don't know who Leigh Hart is, I'd probably raise an eye brow.He has been part of the New Zealand comedy and TV landscape for two decades now.He is also the face of Hellers sausages, the creator of Wakachangi beer and, more recently, the insanely good Snackachangi chips THE best Salt n Vinegar chips in the world).BUT whether you know him or not, I think you’ll be a fan of Leigh after this. It’s a fascinating insight into the mind of a creative genius. We get real deep and talk about his childhood which included a whole year without seeing his parents. His entire TV career and which of his old work he regrets now, and how the famous snackachngi chips came about.Lee also reflects on his marriage breakup, the resilience needed to get through it, and how he has become more emotionally vulnerable with age. This was my favourite part of the conversation. His honestly and vulnerability was profound. Thanks to my friends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. I am a daily user of their protein powder. Start every day with a shake for breakfast. Their banana flavor is incredible. They are much more than amazing and delicious protein powder though. Jono Ridler (NZ record holder for longest open water swim)
Just 4 days before recording this podcast, Jono Ridler had SMASHED the New Zealand open water swim distance record when he swam 99 kilometers (previous record was 80km)His 33 hour non-stop swim without a wetsuit started on a fine Tuesday morning and finished on a very story Wednesday night.I really hope you guys like this chat. Campbell Johnstone: First openly gay All Black.
Campbell Johnstone made a name for himself in NZ rugby circles as an All Black and Canterbury Crusaders rugby star in the early 2000's,He made a name for himself internationally in early 2023 when he became the first ever openly gay all black. This is his story. This is as they say in rugby, a podcast of two halves- the first half zooms in on his sexuality and the second half looks back on his rugby career which included three super rugby titles. We chat about his decision to do the interview on Seven Sharp with Hilary Barry, growing up gay and his earliest sexual experiences, coming out to his parents, dabbling with the Grindr dating app and much more. Then we look back on his rugby career- his thoughts on Razor Robertson as a coach, the hilarious reaction from his dad when he told him he was an All Black, his awkward haka experiences and more.I really enjoyed Campbells company and I hope you guys love this conversation and get something from it.Thanks very much to the absolute legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Billy Evans (Boston police commissioner)
William "Billy" Evans. It was an absolute honor and a privilege to spend an hour with Billy Evans in Boston, just 2 days after the 2023 Boston marathon (which he ran with his two sons).Ten years ago, Billy ran the Boston marathon, then shortly after finishing, he and his entire Boston police force had to get to work to try and find out who was responsible for the two bombs that went off near the finish line of the marathon. If you have seen the Netflix documentary series, “American Manhunt: The Boston marathon bombing” you will be familiar with Billy. He is the first face you see in episode one. He is also the person responsible for capturing one of the two bombers alive after he called for a ceasefire after an intense shoot-out on a boat.Billy has lived in Boston his whole life and spent his entire adult life in law enforcement. He is a passionate runner, husband, dad, and Bostonian. And I could not believe my luck when he kindly agreed to sit down with me while I was in his city.In our hour we talk about his relationship with running, his upbringing and losing both his parents at a young age, his decades as a cop in Boston then the Boston bombing, a case that defined his career. Thanks very much to my mates at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. Rachel Hunter was a secondary school student in Auckland when she was "discovered" by a photographer as she ran along an Auckland beach. She soon became one of the world’s most in demand models, earning a reputation only a handful of people had as a “super model.“ In this "bite size" clip taken from our full conversation, Rachel and I speak openly about her ex-husband and the father of her children, Rod Stewart,She reveals why she has never read the parts about herself in his book and reflects on that moment she told him the relationship wasn't going to last and her feeling about him now. And I respect Mitch for his honesty. Episode 54: Dame Lisa Carrington
Dame Lisa Carrington is possibly the most esteemed guest on the podcast so far. Not only the very first Dame but also the greatest NZ Olympian of all time with 5 gold medals and hundreds of other accolades to her name. This is such a cool conversation. We see Lisa on TV, usually smiling on the podium with a gold medal around her neck followed by a 30-second sound bite on the news. But I have never heard Lisa be this candid before. Ever. This is a true look into the mind of a world-class athlete. You’ll get to know her strengths, weaknesses, flaws, fears, insecurities, and everything in between.I always thought she was a good role model. Now I know for certain that she is!Thanks to my friends at Radix Nutrition for getting in behind this episode. Episode 51: Shane Cameron
Shane Cameron is one of New Zealands best known boxers. He is now a sucessful businessman.Shane and I sat down for this podcast way back in January. Long before the podcast “Runners Only!” even launched. Being on the cusp of being an actual boomer, I lost this entire audio file and some others…or so I thought. They turned up the other day on an SD card (long born story).Shane’s a good dude and I forgot how enjoyable our conversation was. We talk in depth about the “fight of the century” against David Tua (and how long it took him to recover mentally from the beating), Dancing with the stars, life before and after boxing, the Commonwealth games, and heaps more. Please “subscribe” if your podcast platform allows it, and it’ll be on your phone on Monday morning when you wake up.Here is the you tube link to THAT fight against David Tua which we discuss in detail:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IweZbGWpMc Hosted on Acast. Bite size: Rachel Maia.
This “bite size” podcast episode comes from my full conversation with Rachel Maia. If you like this snippet, feel free to listen to her whole remarkable story when you have a spare hour.Rach is mum of three from Whanganui. She is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world. Hell of a story. She only got the leg amputated 3 years ago after sucking up a lifetime of pain from a climbing wall injury she suffered in her teens. In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee. Episode 50: Rachel Maia
Rachel Maia from Whanganui is total bad-ass. But just DON’T call her “Inspirational.” (She explains why during our conversation). As well as being a mum to three kids, Rachel is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world. What makes this even more remarkable is the backstory. When she was 16, Rachel had a freak fall from a reasonably small height at an indoor climbing wall and broke both her ankles. Then years later as an adult she decided to return to the spot she loves…even though it had, in many ways, ruined her life.In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee. It’s a hell of a journey and I really hope you guys like it. Rachel Maia is a woman on a mission to remind each and every one of us that we all have unlimited potential.Need to warn you, there were a couple of sound and microphone issues with this episode. I’m so sorry about that. If you are listening with earplugs in it may not be too annoying (hopefully) but yeah, its an incredible story so I hope Rach's story is bigger than the technical difficulties.Dom Hosted on Acast. Joseph Sullivan is a HERO! But I feel like he is one of those under-the-radar heroes. Where the name rings a bell, but you can’t quite recall where you know it form. And that is just the way this unassuming fire fighter and father from Bay of Plenty likes it.At the 2012 Olympics, he won a gold medal. His rowing race was so epic that he won a Halberg Award for "New Zealand's Favorite Sporting Moment".He retired prematurely in 2014 after being screwed over by Rowing NZ, something which broke him and took a while to recover from.Since then, he has found a new purpose in the NZ fire service. He got married, had 2 kids. Oh, and trained as a grinder for Team NZ and won the Americas Cup. Episode 42: Zoe McBride (Rower who prioritzed mental health over a possible Olympic medal)
Zoe McBride was a three-time world champion for rowing. But her success came at a huge personal toll- physically first in the form of an obsession with her weight, then mentally. It all came to a head in April last year when Zoe and her rowing partner, Jackie Kiddle were gearing up for the Tokyo Olympics (where a medal was almost a certainty). They never made it to the Olympics. After endless months of wrestling with demons, Zoe made the call to put her physical and mental health first, a move that crushed not only her own Olympic dream, but Jackie’s as well. Brad Smeele was one of the first guests on the podcast (episode 4, March 2022). He now becomes the first guest I've had on twice. The first episode with Brad is one that I still get messages about most weeks. I think this conversation will be just as impactful. So many lessons in here and a look inside his best selling book which has just come out, "Owning it." Its a great book- I read the entire thing (and its a big-ass book). Brad wrote the whole thing, all 500,000 words using a mouth stylus and tapping on his iPhone screen woodpecker style. Its a mind blowing achievement.Hope you guys enjoy Brads company as much as I do. During the first covid lockdown back at the start of 2020, Chanel Harris-Tavita from the Warriors NRL team started writing one day. Then he wrote some more the next day. Chanel Harris-Tavita is a 24 year old rugby league player for the Warriors- he's bloody good, too! Last weekend (Saturday September 3) he played his final game for the Warriors against the Gold Coast Titans at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland. He made a decision earlier this year to have a break for the sport that has brought him money and fame and is also the only career he has known. He's not calling it retirement. He's not ruling out a future return. But he has no idea of what his 2023 will look like, other than it will include travelling and journalling. Its scary...but also bloody exciting. He's a fascinating guy and I really hope you guys like this conversation.DomCheck out his blog: simplelessons.com Hosted on Acast. Very exciting day for Victoria Taylor. At 4am this morning (September 1, 2022) she will start her attempt to beat the official world record for running the length of NZ, a record that has stood since 1975. To claim the record, she will havew to run about three full marathons every day for 18 days. Just let that sink in for a second....around 126km per day for 18 days! Its a mindblowing thing to attempt. What makes this attempt even more remarkable is she is the mum of a two year old so has done most of her training pushing him in a stroller. She knows what she is in for though, ten years ago when she was 19 she ran the length of NZ in 34 days.Follow her socials to follow her progress:FB: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100071705915836IG: nzrun2022Give-a-little: https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/nz-run-for-mental-health?fbclid=IwAR1OTtrdkzkaywXO4eLpvq1V-oZYK87rX77xPHU4FZLdpwWiEADcz73_x7Y Hosted on Acast. Matthew Ridge is a New Zealand sporting and Television celebrity who most Kiwis probably have an opinion about, whether they have met him or not.He was a tennis champion during his teens. Then switched to rugby and briefly made the All Blacks before switching to rugby league where he made a name for himself as one of the most gifted and highest paid players in the world. After retiring from sport he enjoyed more success as a TV star and half of an incredibly successful comedy duo with Marc Ellis.Despite living so much of his life on TV and in magazines, Matthew is a relatively private person these days so it was a real honour to sit down with him for a conversation about many different aspects of his life- sports, fame, love, divorce, parenthood, legal troubles, drugs, reputation and much much more.Hope you guys like this one. Thrilled to be sharing this episode with you guys. Rhys Darby!I really loved doing this one. I'd say we have chatted 15times for short radio interviews over the years so this was a first. Lots of big laughs, as you'd expect from Rhys, but also lots of really good insightful chat. It was good to peel back those hilarious top few layers and get a little glimpse into the man behind that voice, those jokes, those movies, those international commercials, etc. Rhys is a New Zealand treasure so it was surreal having him round at my place sitting in my podcast studio (spare room) to share stories about his incredible life.Hope you guys enjoy this one. Many New Zealander over a certain age probably remember an iconic student bar called The Fat Ladies Arms. That was the brain child of Leo Molly in the early 1990s in Palmerston North. That is when we became friends. Since then Leo has ridden the extreme highs and lows of hospitality with resturants and bars including Euro, Cowboys, Headquarters and Cardiac (Which sent him bankrupt). At the time of releasing this, Leo has just announced that he is pulling out of the race to be the next Mayor of Auckland (This chat was recorded earlier in the year and we talk about pretty much everything EXCEPT for politics). This was a fun conversation- if you've never heard of Leo you'll get to learn about the life of one of New Zealands great characters. The 1960 Olympics in Rome have historical significance for New Zealand, then a little known country of just 2 million people. Murray Halberg and Peter Snell both in black singlets won gold medals on the track within an hour of each other. Not long after that their friend and training partner, Barry Magee won a bronze medal in the dark in the marathon. As well as all being Kiwis and friends. All three men were trained by the great coach, Arthur Lydiard (who had to pay his own way over and was not allowed to stay in the village or watch his athletes. In this short podcast recap, 88-year-old Barry gives us a blow by blow of the greatest day of his life with detail so crisp it feels like you are running alongside him.I can’t thank Barry enough for sharing his story with me. And I hope you guys enjoy it.Dom Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

17: Barry Magee (1960 Olympic marathon bronze medalist)
88 year old Barry Magee was, in his own words, only a “decent runner” compared to his training partners in the 1950s. Then again, his training partners were Peter Snell and Sir Murray Halberg. (Barry’s best 5000m time was 13.39 so you be the judge about his talent or lack of!!). The three Arthur Lydiard coached athletes went to the 1960 Olympic games in Rome. Expectation was high for Snell and Hallberg (which they both delivered on, winning gold within an hour of each other). But Barry was not even expected to be anywhere near the podium for the marathon.Due to the heat in Rome, the marathon time was changed to late afternoon meaning it finished in the dark (running on cobblestones with no streetlights). This meant Barry had no idea that he had won the bronze medal when he finished in pitch black in what has gone on to be known as one of the greatest marathons of the century! This is an exhilarating story of a golden era of New Zealand athletics, and it was an absolute honor to sit with Barry and have him reminisce. He still coaches to this day and can often be found at the finish line cheering on his athletes. He is a man who has devoted his life to running. This is a must listen for any history buffs or running nerds.Big thanks to the sponsor of this episode, the incredible HUAWEI WATCH GT runner. Bite size (ICYMI) Cam Calkoen shares, for the first time, the story about his attempt to take his own life
Cam Calkoen was born with Cerbral palsy. This has made everything he has achieved that much more difficult than those of us born without the condition. Even though he has done thousands of hours of public speaking, in this moment from our conversation he shares, for the first time ever, the lowest point of his life where he made a spontaneous decision to try and end it all. It's raw. It's vulnerable. It's not pretty. But its 100% honest and unfiltered. Warts and all. Cam is an inspirational individual. If you like this, please listen to our full conversation.
