The Soul

On the special occasion of Sri Lanka’s Independence Day on Feb 4th, Mae sits down with Sri Lankan reggae/dub/rock band, The Soul. They chat about the band's insistence on NOT being a cover band and making only original music (and being a broke musician in the process), the sad sad situation of Sri Lanka’s economy but also how it’s not sad and everything is perfectly fine (right?). When talking about their music it ranges from dystopian futures and reflections on political turmoil all the way to the woes of being a struggling independent artist. Oh and they teach Mae some Sinhalese too (whether it was successful or not you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out).   Song List (Audio): Dancer Wake (01:13 - 06:35) Light Bringer (25:52 - 32:27) Lucky Child (38:38 - 48:34) Grasshopper (57:16 - 1:04:41)   Follow The Soul: Instagram @thesoulsrilanka Facebook @thesoulsrilanka The Soul is:  Dave Roberts on vocals Khazim Miskin on lead guitar Uvindu Perera on bass Sarani Perera on rhythm guitar Divanka Sewmin on drums   Come be our friend: Facebook @maedinindia Instagram @maedinindia Twitter @maedinindia   CREDITS: Host: Mae Twitter: @maebemaebe Instagram: @maemariyam Producer: Shaun Fanthome, Husein Haveliwala  Content & Social Media Manager: Meghna Gulati Sound Editing & Additional Engineering by: Lakshman Parsuram Video Editing by: Jishnu Guha Episode Mixed & Mastered by: Kartik Kulkarni Music Mixed by: Ashyar Balsara Recorded at Island City Studios

Maed Mixtape - Savera

We’ve got a new mixtape for you from our newest member of the Maed in India team, audio engineer & sound editor, Sarthak Ray. Savera is his recipe for mornings sponsored by Delhi nostalgia (yes, he’s a Delhi boy). Each song takes you through moments when you just want to stay in bed a little longer or need a big bang to kickstart your morning workouts. From comfort-pop, to funk rock and electronica, Savera is woven together with Sarthak’s potent pairing of major Dilli yearning with a dash of doomsday-humour.    P.S. We also think that Sarthak should start a new career in ASMR voiceovers.   —   Song List: Anika Bharwani - Banana Bread (02:02 - 03:57) The Revisit Project - Straight Through (04:56 - 09:11) Arrows - Carnaby ft. Zero

It’s happening.  No, this isn’t a dream.  We can’t contain our excitement any longer.  We have two HUGE reasons to celebrate.  It’s Maed in India’s 300th episode!!!  We’re celebrating this milestone with a band that’s been the soundtrack of the lives of college students through the late 90s and early 2000s.  Mae has the iconic alt rock band Zero in the studio to celebrate 300 episodes of the show! And she’s even brought an old friend along with her too - Music Journalist, Co-founder of erstwhile NH7.in, Head of Red Bull Media House India, and #1 Zero superfan – Arjun S Ravi. They chat to Sidd, Warren, Bobby and Rajeev about their first i-Rock, about how these Dadar boys know each other, what their songs are really about (kinda) and how Zero once almost broke up. You also get to hear about how they got paid for a gig in sandwiches, a Europe tour that never happened because they weren’t “Indian enough”, using underwear as a pop filter, Buffy The Vampire slayer, leather chaps, and a whole lot more. You’ll also get to hear them perform a song that they’ve never recorded before right here on Maed in India. Song List: Mariachi (01:44 - 06:32) Wish (34:09 - 38:50) Take Me Away (1:10:18 - 1:15:19) Zero is: Rajeev Talwar on Vocals Warren Mendonsa on Guitars Girish 'Bobby' Talwar on Bass Sidd Coutto on Drums   Follow Zero: Instagram @whatmezero Facebook @whatmezero Twitter @whatmezero Come be our friend: Facebook @maedinindia Instagram @maedinindia Twitter @maedinindia CREDITS: Hosts: Mae Mariyam Thomas & Arjun S Ravi Instagram: @maemariyam & @arjun_s_ravi Twitter: @maebemaebe & @arjun_s_ravi Sound Editing & Additional engineering by: Lakshman Parsuram Episode Mixed & Mastered by: Kartik Kulkarni Producers: Shaun Fanthome and Husein Haveliwala Artwork: Alika Gupta Recording Engineers: Ashyar Balsara & Aria Nanji Music Mixed by: Jehangir Jehangir & Warren Mendonsa Recorded at Island City Studios

Where Did They Go? - Calico

Hi! While we’ve been on hiatus, Mae decided to go back to her older Maed in India episodes, particularly the ones where bands have either disbanded, or are on an indefinite hiatus. It got her thinking – “Where Did They Go?” And so, to ease back in from our hiatus, we’re showcasing Maed in India episodes from way back when that featured bands that are basically nonexistent. To kick things off, we have the 4-piece alternative pop rock band Calico, when they made their Maed in India debut on Episode 142 of the show in November 2018. Till date, they have no album or EP (only a couple of singles) but you get the chance to hear some piping hot tunes from their studio session. PS. Take a look at our episode artwork! You’ll see that we’ve created a word search where you can look for the band name and their song titles. We hope you enjoy it!
