We're sitting down and we’re yarning to some great New Zealanders, their back stories, their front stories, even stories where they went sideways, we will go there. It’s a place where we celebrate the great people of this glorious nation.

Carlos Ulberg

Today’s guest is Auckland MMA fighter Carlos Ulberg - aka “The Black Jag”. Carlos is part of the hugely successful City Kickboxing team - and it's a gym that’s described as "an old warehouse on the edge of the city" but has garnered global attention for it’s impressive array of extremely ridiculously talented UFC fighters - like Israel Adesanya and Dan Hooker. He wants to be the best light heavyweight fighter in the world, and listening to him share his story of where he's come from and how he intends on doing it, is a fascinating insight into the mind of a professional athlete.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Brooke Howard-Smith

Today’s guest is a well known Kiwi entrepreneur who's life has been truly fascinating thus far - the yarns do not stop today! Many will remember Brooke Howard-Smith from the consumer affairs show Target - some may have also seen him murder me last year on the first New Zealand season of The Traitors. And there's so much more. He was an X Games medalist and professional inline skater, he got kicked out of the United States once, AND he owned the well known nightclub, The Pony Club. He's more recently been involved in some truly wonderful charity campaigns, he set up a successful talent agency, and he's got skin in the game in the Metaverse (I'll let him explain that haha).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Liv Mackay

Today’s guest is our super talented New Zealand Sail GP team strategist - Liv Mackay. Liv is also in the New Zealand team for the first ever women’s America’s Cup in Barcelona this year - so a massive year ahead! Liv is a great role model not only for younger sailors, but she isn't afraid to speak about the lack of female representation in the sport too. She spends a lot of her downtime (which she has bugger all of!) at local yacht clubs inspiring others to get involved.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Keven Mealamu

Today’s guest is one of the country’s greatest and most loved rugby players. A true gentleman of the sport, Keven Mealamu played 132 tests for the All Blacks - just two players have played more. He won the Rugby World Cup twice and made more than 150 appearances for the Blues in Super Rugby.  He is loved by those who played with him, those who played against him, and I think it's fair to say we all love him (well you definitely will after this!).  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're kicking off with an extremely talented young man - Jackie Cheng. He's an actor and stuntman, a Muay Thai fighter, and a very funny and clever creator on social media, with around half a million followers on Instagram and TikTok. Toni Street

Before Kiwi Yarns returns for 2024 - here's another oldie but a goodie! Such a beautiful chat with Toni back in 2021. Today’s guest is the wonderful Toni Street - and I’m pretty sure it would be fair to say there’s really not much this woman can’t do. She is an incredibly talented TV presenter and radio host, sports commentator, she’s a dab hand in the kitchen, she’s played both cricket and netball at a representative level, and she’s a superstar Mum to her three beautiful children. We have a lovely chat about her success, but also her strength and resilience through some really tough times. Toni is a remarkable woman with the most infectious smile and it's always a joy to speak to her!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Ruby Tui

While Kiwi Yarns is on a bit of a break, I'm sharing some of my favourite episodes! This interview with Ruby Tui was one of my first interviews on Kiwi Yarns, from back in 2020! She came to my house and we had a great chat - will definitely hit her up for another catch up because there is LOTS to catch up on! Ruby Tui is a ridiculously talented woman who not only lights up the rugby field, but has the exact same effect when she walks into a room. Her warmth, generosity and humbleness makes her one of New Zealand's favourite rugby players. She's always worked incredibly hard to get to where she is - and does not take that for granted. Listening to Ruby's outlook on life and attitude towards the job she loves doing is pretty special.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Abbas Nazari

Happy New Year! Sharing a couple of favourite Kiwi Yarns while the show is on a break. This is a must-listen. Today’s guest is a remarkable young man with an incredible story. Abbas Nazari was just seven-years old when he and his family fled the Taliban in Afghanistan - and experienced a journey that would last for months - including being stuck onboard the Tampa. This was the boat that Australia horrifically turned its back on resulting in an international stand off 20 years ago. Abbas and his family were accepted to come to New Zealand to be resettled - and it’s from here this amazing man and his amazing family started a new life… The Fulbright Scholar has written After The Tampa: From Afghanistan to New Zealand and it's an absolute must-read, along with this absolute must-listen episode! She is a remarkable woman, a truly special role model - we are so lucky to have her! It’s also been a massive year away from the black line for Sophie - she got married this year, and her and her husband Rob will be welcoming their first child in 2024. Justine Smith

Today’s guest is the first comedian I ever saw live and rest assured she’s been a favourite ever since! The award-winning Justine Smith took her first gig as a dare - and to sound cliché the rest is history. But, as you'll hear, the rest took time, patience and bloody hard work. She won the Billy T Award in 2003, and has been the winner of the Award for Best Female Performer from the NZ Comedy Guild an incredible four times.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

And then when I went down the TimProvise rabbit hole, he became my favourite roving sports reporter. Brianne West is the founder and former CEO of Ethique - the world’s first zero waste beauty brand. Sam Smith is a comedian, a writer, a musician (but not to be confused with the other Sam Smith haha), he’s a dentist (yes that's correct), an MC, AND he won this year’s first season of The Traitors alongside Anna Reeve. Not only is Sam one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and has all those mad skills, he lives life with MS and he's legally blind. But as you'll hear - he lets NOTHING slow him down. Art Green

Today’s guest was New Zealand's first Bachelor. Back in 2015, Art Green was thrust into the spotlight, where he spent a good chunk of time on television without his shirt on, he got to pash a whole bunch of lovely ladies and got called super cliché things like a “heart throb”. And then, he fell in love on the show with Matilda, he picked her and it really was the start of something special. Now Art and Matilda are happily married, living a delightful life in Warkworth with their third child on the way. He now HOSTS the Bachelor/Bachelorette, he’s a really awesome advocate in the health and fitness space (the good side of it too may I add), and he really loves gardening, and cooking massive bits of meat on the barbecue. Kelly Hutton

Today’s guest is a wonderful woman I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for the past three years. During that time Kelly Hutton - one of the OG Canterbury Flames netballers - has been living with stage three Ovarian Cancer. She’s beaten it twice - but was told at the start of August that she’s got just weeks to live. Kelly and I first met when she won a charity auction helicopter skydive with me, and we have kept in touch ever since. She has a passion for living life and really has pulled the middle finger at her cancer. Since diagnosed she's done half marathons, jumped out of helicopters, walked some of our beautiful walks and got a good chunk of the way through cycling across Aotearoa before she got sick again. Now, she really is out of time, and this may very well be the last time I speak to her. We were messaging and she asked if I was open to doing a Kiwi “end of” Yarn - she said we Kiwis don’t tend to talk that much about the end of life and “this sort of shit enough”, so could we hit one final spot together and change a bit of the world. Well, Jono has just absolutely blown that out of the water (I’m not apologising for that pun) and swum 99.1 kilometres across the Hauraki Gulf. It’s the longest solo-unassisted open-water swim in New Zealand history. If little black books were still a thing I reckon Steven’s would have some HUGE names in it (actually he showed me, he's got Kris Jenner's number). He’s been responsible for getting some of the biggest stars on the cover of Remix Magazine - we’re talking Naomi Campbell, Hayley Bieber, and just recently Ashley Graham. Major Buffy Little

Today’s guest is Major Buffy Little - a nursing officer in the New Zealand Army. Tomorrow (25 April) is Anzac Day, so who better to get on than a pretty remarkable woman who’s helped with the NZDF’s response to the Christchurch Earthquake, she was involved in the rescue efforts after the Whakaari/White Island eruption, and has served in Vanuatu and Iraq. Buffy is also a two-time breast cancer survivor, and she talks about when her wife was then also diagnosed in 2019, it made Buffy realise she wasn't quite dealing with the physical and mental toll it had taken on her. She's off to the Invictus Games in Germany in September - a mission that's been over three years in the making (thanks Covid). Good luck Buffy!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Will Thomas and Nick Crisp have grafted hard to get to where they are today - and it’s absolutely paid off - constantly selling out gigs and being the first Kiwis to perform at the massive Tomorrowland Festival in Belgium last year. A huge rugby career that he stepped down from in 2021. As you'll hear, life after rugby is going really well for Kieran, and he has possibly one of the most random Kiwi Yarns quickfire answers I've ever heard (hint: the last one!). The kura kaupapa teacher had served one term on council and now has the top job and boy has he already been busy - particularly in the past few weeks dealing with the aftermath of the devastating Cyclone Gabrielle. Today’s guest is journalist Charlotte Bellis.  Charlotte began her career in her hometown Christchurch, but it’s taken her all over the world, from Europe to the United States and more recently, Afghanistan, where she has sat down and interviewed the Taliban. Last year she became a mum, and during her pregnancy she fought for herself and the many Kiwis locked out of New Zealand due to the MIQ system during the pandemic. Dave Letele

In his own words, Dave Letele's story is "from rags to riches, back to rags, and hopefully back to riches, but riches for me means different things now, it's not just about money." The man who can comfortably sit in a board room, deal with the Government but also go to a gang pad is making massive changes to people's lives through Buttabean Motivation, or BBM.  BBM has become a hugely important organisation by helping better the lives of those that society has left behind, to give them a push-start to get back on track. The work Dave and his crew do is absolutely remarkable, and so is his story.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Robin Judkins

To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the iconic Coast to Coast, it would be rude not to get the man behind it on for a cracking yarn. Robin Judkins set the first 79 athletes away on Kumara Beach back in 1983 and since then there's been over 20-thousand athletes from all over the world scrambling for a spot in the 243km event from the west to the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. He's a legend, his race is a legend and I promise you, even if you have absolutely no intention of doing it, you'll still enjoy the story!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kia ora and welcome to another year of Kiwi Yarns! I’m so stoked to spend 2022 talking to more wonderful New Zealanders, and the first guest of the year is no exception. Olivia Shivas is the very talented digital producer at Stuff (although she has JUST taken on a new role which we hear all about) - who late last year took out the ACC Supreme Award at the Attitude Awards. This was for her brilliant work reshaping how disability is portrayed in the media. Part of this work includes her outstanding podcast, What’s Wrong With You? An open and honest look into living with a disability in a world that’s not designed for you. Olivia's podcast with co-host Paralympian Rebecca Drubber is available on all major podcast apps. Enjoy! Emma Twigg personifies a never give up attitude and we all were witness to that when she won Gold at the Tokyo Olympics. I'm pretty sure most of us cried when she crossed the finish line, because we felt the heartbreak she'd had with a fourth in London and another fourth in Rio. And this time, she'd done what she always knew she could do. A champion rower with an amazing story about how it all went right on the day.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're chatting to filmmaker Ollie Lucks, who has just released his doco/fly-on-the wall film There’s No I in Threesome. Ollie also stars in this as it's a true story about him and his fiancée, and their decision to open up their relationship and share their exploration of polyamory in the build up to their wedding.  Polyamory specifically refers to people who have multiple romantic relationships at the same time. And look this is a spoiler without it really being a spoiler - the relationship doesn’t end well. But by crikey it leaves us with a delightfully interesting, sad and fascinating film. Dr Nikki Turner on the COVID Vaccine

This episode is a bit different. It is still a great New Zealander, there’s no two ways about that. Today’s guest is Dr Nikki Turner, director of the Immunisation Advisory Centre, an academic General Practitioner and an Associate Professor in the Division of General Practice and Primary Health Care, University of Auckland. Dr Nikki Turner is here to talk about the COVID Vaccine. I, like many, have become extremely concerned at the level of misinformation, rumours, lies, hearsay - you catch my drift - about Covid and in particular, around the vaccine rollout. I’m concerned and scared that scientists and experts aren’t being listened to, but your Mum’s cousin’s Aunt on Facebook is, or the Yoga influencer on Instagram has miraculously overnight become more qualified than an epidemiologist. We are, without doubt, in a terribly uncertain and scary time, but that should be all the more reason to listen to the advice of people whose job it is to keep us healthy, keep us safe. I wanted to use my platform in a way that gives you one of these people, gives you the answers, gives you clarity and certainty. Guled Mire

Guled Mire is coming to us from New York, after winning a Fulbright Award to study at the Ivy League-listed Cornell University. Not a bad achievement for a young man who dropped out of school at the age of 16 after being told university wasn't really for people like him. The former refugee drew on the strength from his mother - who as a solo parent, fled Somalia in the midst of civil war with her nine children, spent time in a refugee camp in Kenya before bringing her family to New Zealand for a better life. But what does "better life" in New Zealand actually mean? Unfortunately for Guled and so many other refugees here, it's just not that straight-forward. So, Guled has drawn on his own experiences to become a leader, a role model, a man who works extremely hard to ensure ethnic youth of refugee and migrant backgrounds have a voice and every opportunity they can in New Zealand. Ruth Croft

When I saw today’s guest cross the finish line a few weekends back at the Tarawera Ultramarathon I knew immediately I wanted to talk to her. Ruth Croft smashed the 102 kilometre race (yes, that says 102 kilometres) - with a course record of 9 hours, 21 minutes and 3 seconds. Ruth's running journey is a fascinating one in which she admits over the course of her career she has fallen in and out of love with it on more than one occasion. It's a fascinating look into what goes into training for such a massive race. What's next you ask? Nevermind 102 kilometres, Ruth's now preparing for a 100 mile race in the US (and yes, that says 100 miles)! Legend!  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jessie then set up “The Not so Redundant Club” to support other people who have lost their jobs. Brad Smeele

Today's guest is Brad Smeele - a legendary world champion wakeboarder, and an extremely talented Kiwi who spent the better part of a decade killing it on the world stage. In 2014, Brad won a global award for “Trick of the Year” for nailing a double tantrum to blind (we will find out about what that is but know it's a big trick) - the first person in the world to do so. But, that very trick would a few weeks later change his life - Brad took a heavy crash trying to land it - and broke his neck so badly he was left quadriplegic. By his own admission, he's battled through some pretty dark times since the accident, but hearing how he has navigated through that is a remarkable story. Chris Parker is a very charismatic, talented and award-winning comedian and actor, and it would be fair to say he was a shining light for many people during New Zealand’s 2020 lockdown 1.0 and 2.0.  When we were all stuck in our homes, Chris took to Instagram and basically could nail every type of lockdown character there was - from iso-baking, to at-home travel blogs, even mastering Dr Ashley Bloomfield. He basically became a public service we were all crying out for. He also learnt the art of felting, which resulted in his work being displayed in Auckland Museum! Today’s guest is a bright, bubbly 24-year old woman I now have the pleasure to call a friend. Georgie Ferris brings a whole new meaning to “living everyday as if it’s your last”, because she is very realistic about the fact that she won’t get as many days as most of us. Everyday, Georgie's body is failing her. She has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and a number of really awful complications brought on by that. But Georgie's outlook on life is remarkable. There's no doom and gloom and there certainly doesn’t seem to be any fear.  She's a young girl making the most of every single day by belting out a pretty epic bucket list - to make sure she does everything she’s always wanted to do.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He’s a multiple award winning journalist, but also a kind, helpful and caring person.
