About
Human Trafficking is a form of slavery. It’s the buying and selling of human beings through force, fraud, deception or coercion or by such other criminal means to exploit them for commercial sex, bonded labour or by harvesting their organs and trading in it. Human trafficking is a fast growing crime across the globe. On Humans Not For Sale by Prerana, we aim to create broader awareness around human trafficking for commercial sexual exploitation. We will help answer questions like - What is human trafficking? Is prostitution legal in India? How do the police conduct rescue operations? How do we help the rehabilitation of the victims? And more. Prerana is a non-profit and civil society organisation that protects children born to prostituted women in red light areas and helps the women themselves towards their rehabilitation, social reintegration and to restore their dignity by safeguarding their rights. Life of a Social Worker

Prerana is able to do what it does today because of its frontline staff, the social workers, who put their hearts and minds into their work. They are the team's backbone, and as part of their work, they constantly interact with women, children, and other stakeholders in the red light areas, converting various possibilities into realities for them. In this episode we have social workers Vaishali Karande and Reehanbaig Mirza who have been part of Prerana for over a decade now. They take us through their work while answering questions like,  What is the exact role of a social worker? What are the challenges that a social worker faces as part of their job? What does a typical day of a social worker look like? And many more.   For more information go to https://www.fighttrafficking.org/atc_blog/odip-red-ligh-area-pandemic/ https://www.fighttrafficking.org/case_studies/one-day-in-prerana-a-social-workers-perspective/ Credits  Producer: PRERANA C/O Exe Secretary-Priti Patkar Conceptualised by Dr Pravin Patkar & Kashina Kareem Host & Exe Producer– Kashina Kareem Content & Expertise – Dr. Pravin Patkar Creative Director: Mae Mariyam Thomas Senior Producer: Divita Oberoi Junior Producer: Nikkethana Kamal Sound Design & Mix: Kartik Kulkarni Sound Editor: Yash Hirave Graphic Designer: Alika Gupta

How did Prerana intervene to prevent intergenerational trafficking into the sex trade?

35 years ago, when Prerana began it’s interventions there was a cycle of intergenerational trafficking - where every child born to a prostituted women was a free recruit into the sex trade and its allied activities. Prerana came up with the novel idea of a Night Care Centre where the children of the prostituted women would have access to opportunities and would be safe from the threats of the red-light area. Mrs. Priti Patkar, the Co-founder of Prerana, talks about the situation of these children back when Prerana started it’s work and Prerana’s model of preventing interventional trafficking into the sex trade. We answer questions like,  What are the programs put in place in order to protect these children from intergenerational trafficking? What is the Night Care Centre (NCC) and what does it do? What was the response of the brothel keepers when a facility like NCC came into place? And many more.  For more information go to https://www.fighttrafficking.org/ https://www.fighttrafficking.org/case_studies/social-work-practices-at-preranas-night-care-center/ Advisory from our Sound Designer: Please use headphones for a more immersive audio experience.
