Jeff Tweedy, known for his work with the widely acclaimed alternative rock band Wilco, is one of those artists for whom songwriting seems easy. He even wrote a book called 'How to write one song' that appeared just last October. Unsurprisingly then, it was an absolute privilege to be able to pick his brain a bit about creativity and the songwriting as we discussed his latest album Love Is The King. We also spoke about how he deals with doubt, discovery through songwriting, punk and country music, being creative in times of social isolation, and a lot more! Wardruna - Einar Selvik (2021)
It's very difficult to describe how I felt the first time I heard Nordic folk band Wardruna's music, there is something primal about it, something that reaches you down to the core, something one needs to experience for themselves. It was such a pleasure to talk with the creative mind behind the project, Einar Selvik, about how he thinks about songwriting, how his surroundings inspire him, but also his interest in Nordic culture from a multi-disciplinarian standpoint, and the new album Kvitravn. We also discussed his work on the video game Assassins Creed: Valhalla, how he experiences performing live, and a lot more! By: Robin HignellSupport the showThank you for listening! James Iha (The Smashing Pumpkins/A Perfect Circle) (2012)
Back in 2012 we had the chance to speak with at that point former The Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha around the release of his second solo album Look To The Sky. We spoke about the music he grew up with and how the Smashing Pumpkins got started and the succes they had, but also where he was at that point with progressive supergroup A Perfect Circle and running his own label and studio. We also spoke about the rift between him and The Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, who at that time had reformed The Smashing Pumpkins after their break up in 2000, and there was some contention about why Iha wasn't part of it. Luckily it all turned out well as Billy and James reunited in 2018 and continue to make music together to this day. Interview by: Martin KuiperSupport the showThank you for listening! Shaggy (2020)
Everybody of my generation knows who Jamaican artist Shaggy is; first it were songs like Mr. Bombastic and Oh Carolina that were played on every music channel I can remember, then it we're songs like It Wasn't Me and Angel that caught our ears. Over the years, and into decades Shaggy has been releasing music and jumping outside of his comfort zone for new musical projects, and now he has a Christmas album 'Christmas in the Islands' to give a people a sense of the holidays as they are celebrated in the Caribbean. We spoke about his earliest Christmas memories, why he ended up in music, always wanting to learn new things, and his love for Bob Marley. By: Robin HignellSupport the showThank you for listening! Steve Vai (2012)
Back in 2012 we were able to catch up with guitar legend Steve Vai around the release of his 8th album The Story of Light. FaceCulture founder Martin Kuiper had an insightful conversation with Steve about how his passion for guitar and music developed from his childhood, battling depression in his 20s and how he got through it, playing with artists like Frank Zappa and Joe Satriani, and of course the album itself. Throughout the interview Vai talks with an air of experience and wisdom, eloquently illuminating his story and his perspectives on music and the world. Support the showThank you for listening! Steps - Claire Richards, Faye Tozer and Lee Latchford-Evans (2020)
I was aware of Steps as a young teen (5,6,7,8 and Tragedy were played on all the music channels all the time) but exactly how big they were I never realised before doing research for this interview. It was great to talk to Claire, Faye and Lee about the ups and downs in their career and to see them coming out more confident and happy on the other side with a new album What The Future Holds. As a line in the titletrack reads, the band has "one foot in the past and one foot in the future", they will always acknowledge the hits that got them to this point, but also look for new ways to surprise and excite their audience. A wonderful new chapter for the group has begun.By: Robin HignellSupport the showThank you for listening! For more interviews with your favorite artists visit the FaceCulture YouTube channel.

Guy Sebastian (2020)
I first got to know who Guy Sebastian was through a song called "Battle Scars" that he recorded with American Rapper Lupe Fiasco. It wasn't just the quality of his voice that struck me, but also that what he was singing felt sincere and struck a chord. Ever since then Guy has reached great heights not only in Australia but in the rest of the world as well. In this interview we talked about his latest album T.R.U.T.H., reflecting on his life and career, finding a silver lining, adding positivity to the world, the song Before I Go, writing Choir for a friend who passed away, the importance of mental health, gaining strength from the people around him, and a lot more! Sia (2010)
Back in 2010, we had the chance to talk to singer and songwriter Sia. What makes this interview interesting is that it was right as the Australian musician started gaining worldwide attention with the album We Are Born. Soon after she would be catapulted into the limelight with songs written for artists like David Guetta, Beyonce, Rihanna, and of course her own hit album 1000 forms of Fear (which includes 'Chandelier'). We spoke with Sia about her shyness, abusing alcohol in the past, writing for others, being realistic about music, and a lot more. Perhaps worth of note is that this interview was conducted before Sia prefered to hide her fame because of her rising fame. John Petrucci (Dream Theater/G3) interview (2020)
One of the perks of this job is that there are some incredibly talented people who's brain I can pick about their craft, and guitar virtuoso John Petrucci is definitely one of these people. Listening to his second solo record Terminal Velocity was an absolute pleasure, and as someone who tries to play guitar from time to time, also made me question my life choices a little bit. On the record Petrucci delves into sides of himself he doesn't often get to show in his other creative outings like progressive metal juggernaut Dream Theater. We spoke about the blues, the impact of the late Eddie van Halen, his approach to the guitar, the album of course, and a lot more. As someone who grew up in the 90s, hearing that I could interview one of the Spice Girls was tremendously exciting. Ever since their self-titled debut album back in 2015 we at FaceCulture had the pleasure to talk to English rock band Nothing But Thieves, and frontman Conor Mason in particular, on numerous occasions. Over this time, we've developed an understanding with each other, and Conor's openness and willingness to talk about anything ranging from when he suffered with depression to his musical thought process, has made for some very insightful and fascinating conversations. Although FaceCulture has spoken to Katie a number of times it was personaly my first time, and her thoughtfulness and eloquence did not dissapoint. I knew very little about Faroese artist Eivør before this interview, but delving into her life and music I discovered this wonderfully original and truly enchanting singer, musician and performer. Even more so, both uf us were a bit sick of talking about the pandemic and all the depressing news surrounding it, so we dicided to skip all of that and turn our conversation to her new album Segl. Spinvis (2020)
Nickelback - Chad Kroeger (2017)
Nickelback, despite being one of the most successful Canadian bands ever, has gotten a lot of flak over the years, and so has its polarizing frontman Chad Kroeger, unfairly in my estimation. I was pleasantly surprised about how approachable and genuinely friendly Chad seemed to be when I went to interview him in 2017 for the Feed The Machine album. He was honest, didn't take himself too seriously, and seemed very proud of the work they had done on their latest album. Asaf Avidan (2020)
Israeli singer-songwriter Asaf Avidan is an artist in the truest sense of the word. He started his musical journey first as part of Asaf Avidan & the Mojos, and since 2012 on his own, gaining an audience both at home and abroad. One of his earlier songs, "Reckoning Song" was covered by German DJ Wanklemut and became a smash hit all over the world. But when asked about the cover he says he prefers the original. Avidan is someone who puts a lot of care into his music, he digs deep, asks himself the difficult questions in life, and expresses his experiences and emotions through music. We recently spoke about his new album Anagnorisis, which led into a conversation about the chaotic nature of being, finding meaning in life, his attempts at a polyamorous relationship, and, of course, how all of this fits in with his music. Big Thief - Adrianne Lenker (2019)
I don't remember how I first got to hear Big Thief, it was probably through NPR's Tiny Desk concerts, a haven for good music. Ever since hearing them I was sold, "Mary" in particular struck a chord, so when the opportunity arose I jumped at chance to sit down with Adrianne in a small pink room in Amsterdam to talk about tapping into inspiration, creativity and songwriting, wanting to be part of something bigger, alienation in society, the album U.F.O.F., and a lot more! She struck me as somewhat shy, and not the biggest fan of having a camera shoved in her face, but I have immense appreciation for how she genuinely tried to give honest answers to the questions I was asking, as vague as they might have been at times. It was an absolute pleasure. They were slated to play a festival in the Netherlands this summer, which was cancelled for obvious reasons, so I'll have to wait a bit longer before I get to see them live.By: Robin HignellSupport the showThank you for listening! We spoke about having a day off in Amsterdam, not wanting to censor herself, not caring about popularity, long-term pressure, sorting out her thoughts and a lot more. I had the chance to speak with him on a separate occasion at a festival. Hip Hop festival are unfortunately notorious for artists cancelling last minute or not showing up for interviews. Out of the 8 interviews I had scheduled Gerald was the only one who I ended up talking to that day, even though he was the biggest name on the list. Linkin Park - Mike and Chester (2017)
Like many others I grew up with the music of Linkin Park. The combination of hip-hop and metal elements and a powerful voice that sang lyrics with substance were very appealing to a teenager trying to figure out life. Evidenced by the millions of records sold their music resonated with people, it was and still is a refuge for people who needed "Somewhere To Belong". I had the chance to interview them in March of 2017 about the One More Light album. I remember Chester and Mike being in good spirits, joking around, as we spoke about the album, emotionality in songs, advice from Rick Rubin, Chester having had a tough time after breaking his leg, and a lot more. Scottish singer and songwriter Derek William Dick, better known as Fish, rose to fame as the frontman for progressive rock band Marillion in the 80s, penning hits like Kayleigh and Lavender. After leaving the band Fish continued to turn heads with his solo work, culminating in his final (ever!) album Weltschmerz which is released this year. It was an absolute pleasure to talk to fish, as he was very kind with his time, his willingness to discuss any- or everything, and his very accessible personality. Nightwish - Tuomas Holopainen (2018)
Back in 2018 I was invited to take the train up to Köln, Germany to interview Tuomas for both the Nightwish Decades album and for the debut of Auri, a band Tuomas had created with his wife and singer Johanna Kurkela and bandmate and multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley. In my talk with Tuomas we journeyed through the history of the band, the various line-up changes, the music that came out of it like The Poet and The Pendulum, and arrived at where the band was now, the chemistry between them and his start on what would become Human:||:Nature. After having had the pleasure to talk to people like Floor and Troy in the past, it was a great experience to talk to the mastermind behind this fascinating band and see things fall into place. I was first introduced to the music of Glen Hansard through the movie Once, but it wasn't until researching him for this interview, and delving into the album Didn't He Ramble, that I got a real sense of what kind of songwriter he was. It's not just the storytelling, but the warmth, the sincerity, the emotion that draws you in. And in person, he was the same; he was open, genuine, contemplative about his own craft, all the things you need for a good conversation. We spoke about the album, art vs craft, writing about his friends, music with no agenda, emotionality, and a lot more! Joe Bonamassa (2013)
This was actually my very first interview I did for FaceCulture. It was my first week, and it just so happened that I was the only one available. It didn't hurt that I harbor a strong love for the blues, so it was decided that I would be thrown into the fire and interview global star Joe Bonamassa, one of the best blues guitarists I've ever heard play. The one thing that I remember most from this interview, aside from how courteous and open Joe seemed to be, was the realization that he was just another guy. Obviously one that was ridiculously talented, but a person like me and you. This was a very useful lesson to have learned early on because seeing "famous" people on a screen is very different from sitting across from them, and I was very glad that it didn't affect how I approached Joe that day and everyone I've interviewed since. I had interviewed Mike before, but I prefer this one because we immediately could talk about substantive things. Charles Bradley (2013)
This very intimate interview with Charles Bradley was one of the first that I edited when I started working for FaceCulture back in 2013. My colleague Martin Kuiper did the interview, and I was blown away by how raw and real this interview was as they chronicled through the immensely difficult and tragic life Charles had lived, from being homeless as a teenager to being wrongfully put in jail, to the present where he was living his dream of bringing people joy with his music. I had the good fortune to meet and interview Charles myself a couple of years later, and for a man who had every right to be bitter about the cards he was dealt in life, he seemed like one of the most genuinely warm and loving people I have ever met. So I prepared accordingly, but at the last second she was no longer available so I got to talk with Stella and Jenny Lee instead. With my preparation mostly out the window I decided to just try to have as genuine a conversation with them as I could. Plus, I had spoken to Jenny Lee on a couple of occasions so I knew it would be excellent anyway. Both Stella and Jenny Lee were great fun and I really loved the laid back attitude we all had in this interview. The first time I heard 'Lost On You' it left such an immediate impression on me. I loved the bluesy instrumentation and Laura's vocals are simply incredible, the tone, the natural vibrato, the whistle, everything just worked. When the opportunity arrived to sat down and Talk with Laura Pergolizzi I was quite excited. The day of this interview was a chilly September day, made even colder by the wind, but even so we decided to do the interview outside because the only other option was a noisy cafe. I found Laura to be a very laid back yet open person who is not only a great storyteller in her music, but in conversation as well. We spoke about her "Jim Morrison phase," a difficult time in her life, the good and bad in life, her appreciation of her fans and a lot more! Twenty One Pilots: Tyler Joseph (2013)
Out of all of the interviews I have done over the years this one probably sticks out to me most. It was just after my internship at FaceCulture, we were at Lowlands festival in the Netherlands, and it sounds silly now (remember it was 2013) but we decided out of practicle reasons we'd only interview a single person from each of the bands that day. This is why Josh isn't in the interview. The music of Twenty One Pilots struck me immediately: It was creative, unpredictable, catchy, but it also had substance, which surprised me because you don't often get that combination of qualities. We had this little dark shack backstage and from the moment we started talking it was like I was talking to an old friend, I barely had to think. Tyler is incredibly eloquent and able to express in great detail his thoughts and feelings. Combined with the willingness to be open and genuine this made for a very real, honest conversation, where afterwards it felt almost like stepping out of a haze. It's been incredible to see Tyler and Josh grow out into these musical superstars and over the years I've been lucky enough to talk to them on a bunch of occasions, but this one is still my favorite. Paradise Lost - Gregor Mackintosh (2020)
I had such a good time talking with guitarist, singer and composer Gregor Mackintosh, primarily known for his work with Gothic Metal band Paradise Lost, but also Vallenfyre and Strigoi. I'll admit I will never be the biggest metal connoisseur but to delve into the album Obsidian and the impact that Paradise Lost has had on the genre is fascinating. We talked about the title Obsidian, goth clubs in the 80s, having creative outlets outside of Paradise Lost, a loss of focus in the 2000s, painting pictures with music, and a lot more!
Bob Mould (2018)
Sometimes when I go into these interviews I do not fully comprehend the impact the musician in question has had on the development of not only their style of music, but also on their listeners as well. Bob Mould definitely falls in this category. Not only his work with Hüsker Dü in the 80s, but also with Sugar in the 90s and now his solo work, has inspired countless musicians and fans all over the world, and continues to do so. Bob was gracious enough to answer some questions about his past work, including why Hüsker Dü fell apart and the rock scene back then, before moving towards his most recent solo album Sunshine Rock. It was an absolute pleasure.By: Robin HignellSupport the showThank you for listening! For more interviews with your favorite artists visit the FaceCulture YouTube channel.

Blind Melon - Rogers Stevens and Christopher Thorn (2019)
Blind Melon rose to stardom with their hit No Rain in 1993 andtragically the band theoretically ceased to exist after lead singerShannon Hoon died in 1995. Few people knew Hoon was an avidcamera-enthousiastic who filmed almost every aspect of his life right upuntil the day he died. This paved the way for the penetratingdocumentary All I Can Say about Hoon's life. So when Blind Melonguitarist Rogers Stevens and Christopher Thorn visited Amsterdam topromote All I Can Say I could't resist to ask them about Hoon, BlindMelon and more!By: Martin KuiperSupport the showThank you for listening! Keane - Tom Chaplin and Tim Rice-Oxley (2019)
Since my first interview with Tom en Tim in 2005 I have followed the band with interest. So when I had the opportunity to talk to them about their comeback album Cause & Effect in 2019 I was really curious how their relationship had evolved after the band's break up in 2013. And I couldn't resist to ask Tim about his thoughts about Tom's solo album TheWave ;-)By: Martin KuiperSupport the showThank you for listening! Heather Nova (2019)
Burmudian singer-songwriter Heather Nova has been releasing music for well over 25 years, and the passion and fervor with which she approaches her music to this day is inspiring to see. We spoke about her album Pearl (2019) and what songwriting means to her, but also on a more personal level about going through a divorce, her relationship with nature, and how topics like these find a way into her music. The Lumineers - Wesley and Jeremiah (2019)
Before doing this interview I actually had met Wesley on one occassion, only briefly, when I was filming an interview with him in one of the first weeks as an intern at FaceCulture. The Lumineers were already riding high with their hit song "Ho Hey" and their debut album but what struck me about Wesley was how open he was in talking about his life and his music (something that at the time I thought very successful musicians were reluctant to do). The Lumineers have continued to write poignant and honest songs over the years but for me personally album III, the one I was going to interview them about, took it to another level. I've always loved the more narrative style of songwriting, and how III weaves in characters and stories, while also addressing some very relevant and important issues like alcoholism and addiction that are very dear to their own hearts was a joy to listen to. We spoke about dealing with their early success, taking the stigma away from addiction, not shying away form difficult subject, transcending generations, and a lot more! Patrick Watson (2019)
I had interviewed Canadian musician, singer and songwriter Patrick Watson years earlier, in the same hotel, so I knew he would be a interesting and willing talker. When I arrived, however, I realized I had forgotten my research, and the hotel restaurant was so loud that there was no real way to do the interview inside. We had to be creative, so when Patrick spotted a very colorful egg to sit in I knew it was going to be alright. I remembered the gist of what I wanted to ask so we just started talking away, about his new album The Wave, getting run over by bikes in Amsterdam, growing as a songwriter, his admiration for Connan Mockasin, and a lot more. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. By: Robin HignellSupport the showThank you for listening! For more interviews with your favorite artists visit the FaceCulture YouTube channel.

The Drums - Jonathan Pierce (2019)
To be honest I didn't know that much about the drums before getting the opportunity to talk to founder, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Pierce just over a year ago. So I didn't really know what to expect, but from the get-go this conversation felt like talking to someone I had know for years. Jonathan spoke openly and candidly about being vulnerable, what makes him most happy, tapping into emotions and connecting with others through music. The conversation went so organically that I had to remind myself that he also had a new album, Brutalism, coming out and needed to ask a few questions about that as well. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Support the showThank you for listening! For more interviews with your favorite artists visit the FaceCulture YouTube channel.

Dub FX (2020)
I remember being shown a performance of "Flow" on YouTube years ago and it absolutely mesmerized me. This was before loop stations were commonly used so the fact that he could create all these sounds and weave them into an awesome track just seemed so amazing to me. And most importantly, you could see the passion, the genuine creative talent, with which he did it. So fast forward to years later and I happen to get a chance to sit down with Benjamin Standford, better known by Dub FX, for a conversation. We spoke about his album Roots, but also about what drives him in doing what he does, being an outsider, forging his own path, setting high standards for himself, and a lot more. Beth Hart (2019)
This was the third time I personally had the pleasure of sitting down with Beth Hart (FaceCulture has spoken with her many times). She's such an honest and candid person and because she's had quite the life already she always has an interesting perspective on things. Which makes my job even easier. For this interview the only aim was to focus on positive things, like her early love for the piano, accepting who she is, learning with every record, and of course her most recent album War In My Mind. I had heard and read a lot about James before sitting down with him, both good and bad. Of course I'd seen him on X-Factor UK but I didn't really know what to expect. He was in Amsterdam for a showcase and was kind enough to sit down with us to talk about his music, reinventing himself, letting go of the pressure he dealt with earlier in his career, music snobbery and more! What I remember most from our talk was how honest he was, which isn't always the case when talking to major label artists of his caliber. Support the showThank you for listening! Sabaton - Joakim Brodén (2020)
Although FaceCulture had spoken to him before, this was personally my first time sitting down with Sabaton's Joakim "Jocke" Brodén. The funny thing is that I initially was supposed to talk with drummer Hannes and it was only minutes before that I realized that Joakim was going to do the interview. Sometimes in this line of work the most fun and sincere conversations are the ones that you didn't prepare for, and it always helps to talk to someone who is as easy-going as Joakim. We spoke about taking a critical look at his own music, writing about a dark period in history, self-imposed pressure, evolving without losing your identity, his thoughts on what comes next, and a lot more! Hearing the stories guitarist and songwriter Rich Robinson has to tell from his 35+ year experience in music are simply amazing for any music lover, and I must admit this interview inspired me a great deal. Robinson talks about his early influences like R.E.M. and the Beatles, She Talks To Angels, surreal moments in his career, his critique of the music industry, his friendship with fellow guitarist Marc Ford, the fractured relationship with his brother (and former The Black Crowes vocalist) Chris Robinson, and a lot more.
