78: Does Estrogen Cause Breast Cancer?

How are we at a point where women are terrified of a hormone they've had in their bodies most of their lives? Many of us have heard horrible things about estrogen and its connection to breast cancer. A lot of this public aversion stems from a study that came out in the early 2000s called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The WHI was a landmark study designed to define the risks and benefits of interventions, notably hormonal therapy. Unfortunately, when journals and the media reported on the findings, they didn’t put them into the appropriate clinical context and did not mention the study’s limitations. Ultimately, this led to women ditching their hormones en masse, suffering in silence without an alternative. Today I’m sharing what you need to know about the WHI, what the data shows about the connection between hormone therapy and the risk of disease, why we need to shift our perspective on hormone therapy, and alternatives for women who can’t benefit from estrogen therapy. “I think it's scammy. I think it's dangerous. 74: Youngest Child - Navigating Gen Z with a Positive Attitude

73: Hormone Pellets for Women - Misogyny and Malpractice in Women's Health

I can't bring myself emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, or physically to use hormone pellets with my patients. Hormone pellets are tiny pellets containing hormones and medications inserted under your skin and replaced every three to six months. In my clinic, many unhappy patients come to me with complications from pellets. Outside of my clinical experience, I also tried pellets myself a few years ago, which was the worst experience of my life. Looking at the science, there are much better methods of getting bioidentical hormones, such as topical creams and sublingual troches, and they don’t come with the downsides of hormone pellets. 37: The Bull$hit Fear of Estrogen: I'm Ranting Again

Estrogen has many protective effects, from bone and heart health to thyroid function and sexual motivation. I can't tell you how often I’ve put a woman on estrogen only to return, saying she felt better for a couple of weeks but decided to stop the medication. Why? Because her friends told her that estrogen causes breast cancer. This narrative is spreading like wildfire, and it’s frankly misogynistic. Why should women have to suffer the life-altering adverse effects of low estrogen when they have an alternative? 35: Endometriosis- Taming the Monster with Khush Sra

Endometriosis is a debilitating condition affecting millions of women worldwide, yet many go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years. Early diagnosis leads to better outcomes and improved quality of life. As part of our Endometriosis Awareness Month series, I’m joined by holistic health coach Khush Sra today. In addition to being an Endometriosis Nutritionist, Khush has personally suffered with endometriosis and was diagnosed around 20 years ago. She knows the ins and outs of endo, not just from a practitioner’s perspective and as a woman and a patient. It’s not all in your head. As you probably know, I’m a firm advocate for the removal of foreign bodies and foreign materials, particularly within my practice with the Essure coils. Many women go through a long journey to have the problem acknowledged and often spend years dismissed by doctors. Today I’m joined by actress Candice Barley, who has become a patient advocate after her harrowing experience with breast implant illness. Within a few months of getting breast implants at age 24, Candice started experiencing extreme chronic fatigue, which her doctor dismissed as a side effect of having two young children. 18: The Pitfalls of Hormone Pellets: The Bad, The Worst, and The Ugly

I can't bring myself emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, or physically to use hormone pellets with my patients. Hormone pellets are tiny pellets containing hormones and medications inserted under your skin and replaced every three to six months. In my clinic, many unhappy patients come to me with complications from pellets. Outside of my clinical experience, I also tried pellets myself a few years ago, which was the worst experience of my life. Looking at the science, there are much better methods of getting bioidentical hormones, such as topical creams and sublingual troches, and they don’t come with the downsides of hormone pellets. Today I’m sharing the top ten reasons why I’m a pellet anarchist, misleading ways that pellets are marketed, the things women need to know before using pellets, and what to do if you’ve had pellets and want to make a change.   Highlights How hormone pellets work Pitfall #1: They’re expensive On average, pellets are around three times more expensive than other delivery options for bioidentical hormones Pellets average around $100-125/month versus around $45/month for sublingual troches, tablets, or topicals from a compounding pharmacy Pitfall #2: Hormone levels are too high The sawtooth pattern that occurs with pellets: initially dramatically increased hormone levels followed by a steep decline Pitfall #3: It’s a surgical procedure Adverse side effects from the procedure Although it’s a minor procedure, it’s one you’ll have to have repeated every couple of months Pitfall #4: Once they’re in, they don’t come out If you have side effects or complications, you’re stuck with the pellets for 3-6 months Pitfall #5: You’re subjected to minor surgery every 3-6 months Two irreversible side effects of pellet testosterone therapy if the levels go too high Pitfall #6: Irregular absorption rates Pellets are sold as being the ultimate in stable absorption rates, but research shows that’s not true Pitfall #7: It’s a cash cow for providers The financial upside incentivizes providers to push pellets as the top hormone replacement option Pitfall #8: Who’s inserting them? 12: Does Estrogen Cause Breast Cancer? No - Well, Maybe

How are we at a point where women are terrified of a hormone they've had in their bodies most of their lives? Many of us have heard horrible things about estrogen and its connection to breast cancer. A lot of this public aversion stems from a study that came out in the early 2000s called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The WHI was a landmark study designed to define the risks and benefits of interventions, notably hormonal therapy. Unfortunately, when journals and the media reported on the findings, they didn’t put them into the appropriate clinical context and did not mention the study’s limitations. Ultimately, this led to women ditching their hormones en masse, suffering in silence without an alternative. Today I’m sharing what you need to know about the WHI, what the data shows about the connection between hormone therapy and the risk of disease, why we need to shift our perspective on hormone therapy, and alternatives for women who can’t benefit from estrogen therapy. The bottom line is hormone replacement therapy is a personal choice. We have to look at the risks versus benefits, not expecting it to be a panacea for everything that ails you, but as something that could significantly improve your quality of life when done with caution. 6: Knock Knock, Who's There? What Are Your Provider's Credentials?

Many patients are choosing providers outside of the traditional medical system because of negative experiences with MDs. In a time where there are so many doctors, experts, and gurus to choose from, there’s no need to stay with a provider that is failing you. At the same time, figuring out who is well-positioned to help you has become quite confusing. From doctors who aren’t medical doctors to specialists advising outside of their specialty, how are you supposed to know what to look for? With this episode, I want to get you thinking about your providers and to be empowered in choosing whose advice you follow. It was sold to physicians and patients as a non-surgical, FDA-approved option that could be inserted without much downtime. Sounds good, right? At the end of 2018, Essure production was stopped, and the distributors took it off the market. Welcome to the inaugural episode of Confessions of a Male Gynecologist, a cheeky-sounding name for an unconventional show. I’m Dr. Shawn Tassone, a board-certified OB-GYN who’s also board certified in integrative medicine. It’s an unusual combination, rooted in my recognition that I couldn’t help my patients as much as I wanted to through allopathic medicine alone. Introducing Confessions of a Male Gynecologist

I'm Dr. Shawn Tassone America's holistic gynecologist. I'm double board-certified in Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Integrative Medicine but what's most interesting about me is I have a Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine and Philosophy. I guess you might say, I'm not your average OB-GYN. As part of my mission to change the way both physicians and patients approach women's health, I wrote a book called The Hormone Balance Bible and created the world's first Integrative Hormonal Mapping System.
