Cancer Exercise 🏋️ Specialist Megan Y 2.0 - Episode #90
My guest @megbie growing up, exercise and Megan did not mix. Her friends used to invite her on trails at the time and she could not bring herself to even attempt it. She felt it better to stick to her “typical” asian upbringing, focusing on education and getting a great start on her career as a lawyer. The stress of this career would catch up to her and after some time took a toll on her mental state. Needing a change in her life to hopefully change the trajectory of her life, the next time her friends invited her on a hike, she begrudgingly accepted. One of the first experiences she had with hiking was the many steps to Lion Rock in Hong Kong. The view and feeling of reaching the end was the spark Megan needed to to start her fitness journey. From here, she began ultra trail running around the globe in places like Peru, Canary Islands, Japan, and Korea to name a few. In 2019, Megan was diagnosed with breast cancer, and sadly a second diagnosis in 2021. This made Megan have to readjust and take a step back from ultra running for some time. Rather than allowing this obstacle to derail her life, she used it as a way to recenter her mind and discover more about herself. She left her career to pursue her passion of teaching and speaking. Megan hopes to inspire others with her story and give them the kick start they need to keep pushing forward.

Boston Marathon Qualifier 🏃🏻♀️Mom Anel Hernandez - Episode #89
My guest is Anel Hernandez, a Pepperdine University master’s graduate. Born in 1980 from Mexican immigrant parents, she grew up in Lennox, California. Her fitness journey began in 1997 as a way to help motivate her sister while she trained for the police academy. Anel decided to take fitness seriously over 20 years ago and has not looked backed ever since. She completed her first half marathon at the age of 30 in 2010 and her first marathon two years later. From 2010-2018, Anel ran 7 50ks, participated in Ragnar Relays, over 15 half marathons, as well as 12 marathons, two of which were the legendary Boston Marathon. While competing in her own races, she also made time to pace for the Nutribullet LA Marathon Training Program for two years. Aside from races, Anel enjoys nature and trekked Mount Whitney during this time. She gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Camila, in 2019. Anel has since completed three 10ks, while pushing her daughter in a stroller. She was a pacer for the Rose Bowl Half and LA Marathon in 2021, and is now a pacer for the LA Roadrunners.

Workout Myths with Dr. Christopher Swart - Episode #74
My guest is Dr. Christopher Swart @doctor.swart joined American International College in the Summer of 2021. Christopher received his undergraduate and graduate degree from Bridgewater State University where he studied Exercise Science and Strength and Conditioning. After graduating from Bridgewater State University, he went on to work with three division one athletic programs and worked with athletes ranging from the youth to professional levels. In addition to his expertise in sports performance, he has also worked with a wide range of general and clinical populations in a variety of different health and fitness settings. Following his career in sports performance, he received his PhD from Springfield College specializing in Exercise Physiology where he was responsible for teaching Exercise Physiology Laboratory courses. Prior to his current role at American International College, he has held faculty positions at West Virginia Wesleyan College, Bridgewater State University and Endicott College. He has helped direct the Human Performance Laboratory at two different institutions he has worked for. Lastly, Dr. Swart is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and truly enjoys helping students bridge the gap between the science and applied concepts of health and fitness/sport performance. He truly enjoys meeting new people and guiding young professionals on how to pursue a career in Exercise Science/Strength and Conditioning so don’t ever hesitate to reach out to him! My guest is Coach Venable he was awarded NSCA Strength Of America Award in 2016, the Nebraska State High School Weight Training Program of the year in 2017 and the NHSSCA Mid-West Regional Strength Coach of the Year in 2018, NSCA Strength Of America Award 2019. @coachvenable resume is astounding, and includes ownership of CrossFit Results, Athletic Results Performance Training; his duties as Assistant Strength Coach at Immaculata High School (’08-’09); MidAmerica Nazarene University (’09-’12), Nebraska Weightlifting Club, Lincoln High School and currently North Star High School. He has numerous certifications (approx. 30) to include Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the NSCA, USA Weightlifting Level 2, Poliquin Strength Principles, DNS, FMS, RPR and PPA. From 1990 to 2012 Venable was employed by the Department of Justice as a Lieutenant, Special Operations Response Team Leader and a Recreation Specialist. Venable has served in the U.S. Army for seven years from 1981-1988 as an infantry soldier. He was stationed at Ft. Wainwright in Fairbanks, Alaska and at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, HI.

She is a competitive track runner, and competes in the middle distance races (800m to mile), along with the occasional 5k road race or cross country. Recently, she has also taken up pacing elite races as a fun side hobby, and has paced races from 800m to 10,000m. Dr. Van Dyke grew up in Huntington Beach, CA and ran for Marina High and then Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She attributes a lot of her athlete’s recovery from injury and her continued health in the sport to lots of preventative movement and strength based work.

Ultra coach/active duty military Josh Laker- Episode #29
My guest Josh Laker has been running since he was in junior high but it wasn’t until he joined the military and got stationed in Hawaii (2008) that he actually fell in love with running. He started out his adult running career, running road half’s and full marathons. He really found his passion when he started running trails and ultra distance events. Since turning to mostly trail running he has run 3 -100 mile races countless 50 mile and below races and 1 last man standing event.
Over the course of his adult running journey he really became interested in the science behind running biomechanics and exercise nutrition. So he pursued and obtained a bachelor's degree in exercise science and master’s degree in human performance. He has also received USA Track and Field Level 1 and level 2 certification. He started his official coaching business (4CycleRunner) in 2016 as a way to pass on his love for running and help guide those needing a little extra push to overcome obstacles in achieving their ultra goals

My guest is Super mom Luisa Rivas, she is 56, mother of two amazing boys Max 26 and Marky 22. She was born in El Salvador and lived there for 19 years. In 1983 she migrated to US and has been happily living here since then.
When She was a kid she was always involved in sports, mostly playing basketball, but in 1978 when she was 13 her older brother died in a tragedy, her heart and soul were broken, she desperately wanted to grieve and she began running in the morning, She didn’t have a clue what she was doing. Every time when she used to run some miles in the streets people would teased her. In 1991 she ran her first LA Marathon, that was the day she felt she belonged to this country, running was her language, her culture, her identity.
She hasn’t stopped running since 1978, in the almost 43 years of her running journey she is always looking for ways to keep getting strong. She has become her kids running trainer, an ultra runner, she’s completed back to back races.
Hasn’t been easy? Not all, being the mother of two boys with special needs is very demanding, making time to train is really difficult, but always possible. Learning how to manage her time wisely is a priority, injuries are almost inevitable, but she always looks for ways to train.
Her running story is about never giving up, it’s about empowering women of all ages to give their best, it’s to unlabeled a disability because disability is just a word and not a lifestyle, her story is for everyone, her story is to remind us that age is just a number, there’s always room to grow, no matter how young or old we are!
